Asking for an upgrade... rude?

I would like to add to this post. We arrived on Friday, and received a free upgrade. We are staying at the Grand Floridian.

I asked the cast member that walked us in about the cost of upgrading to a club level room. I also mention it was my girlfriend's birthday week. He went away for about 15 minutes, came back with the great news. He upgraded our room from a standard garden view room to a theme park view suite /w club level access at no cost to us.

That's the best! That is the right way to ask so they don't think you have want free but love to surprise you with an on the house response

We booked a standard view at AKL last May for our 1 year anniv and I asked (very nicely and sweetly) if we could maybe, possibly, pretty pretty please have an upgrade to a savanna view. and it was granted! The CM was more than happy to ask the manager and happy she could help us.

That being said I did go back in Sept with my mom (just a girls trip) and asked for an upgrade, the CM was not overly friendly and said no- just flat out no. I think it depends on the CM's personality- i always try to be sweet, not just because I want something but because I'm so happy to be there! Even after we go to our room and found our AC vent was covered in mold and my mother has severe allergies, I called the front desk and they gave a partial savanna view room. so all in all not bad!

Just ask nothing to loose!

Update! Got back from my trip a few days ago. My brother arrived before us, and when he checked in, he inquired about how much an upgrade would cost. The CM told him we had already been upgraded since when I made the reservation, I had mentioned it was my mother's birthday! We had a great room in Conch Key with a view of Cinderella's castle and Space Mountain. We saw fireworks from our balcony every night.
