Hi everyone,

This is my first time writing a post like this and it's a little difficult.
I'm in medical school and have had some difficulties this semester, partly because of some health issues that have affected my abilities in addition to the difficulty of the material this semester. I just finished my second pathology exam and I'm in shell shock. I was ready for a very difficult exam, but it was more intense that I expected. Simply put, I'm going to have to make some very difficult decisions if I don't pass this exam. I've never been in an academic situation like this and in all honesty...I'm scared overwhelmed, and embarrassed. I know that asking for help regarding an "exam" and academics sounds trivial, but I've got a lot riding on this score. I'm currently studying abroad and am away from the family so I'm feeling a little alone.
I guess I needed to share this with people who respect those who follow their dreams and understand the 'ups and downs' of life.

Thank to whomever may read this :)

As someone who is in their last year of University (studying history) I can understand where you are coming from about exams and exam pressure, but obviously medicine involves a lot of memory! Often with intense exams, you will not be the only one effected. I am pretty sure all the people in that exam with you were thinking the same. Often they will take a second look at the exam if a lot of people had a problem with it, and adjust marks accordingly.

If you think it through logically, what is the worst that could happen? Maybe you will get a bad score, would it be the end of the world? Could you regain those marks elsewhere? If worst really does come to worst, you can always re-take the year, a number of my friends have done it. It's ok, especially if you have had medical problems. Have you submitted a notice of your circumstances so they can be taken into account when marking the paper?

Look at it this way, no life comes without a bit of failure. Walt Disney himself had to close down his first studio because it went bust, but look at his legacy now! If worst comes to worst, chalk it up to experience and just try again. If you at first don't succeed, try and try again!

Best of luck!

asking for help regarding an "exam" and academics sounds trivial

That is is no way trivial!!! Professional degree programs are extremely stressful and there is a lot riding on every exam you take. Add health issues to an already difficult course load and it is even more stressful. (I've been to law school and have the stress related issues to prove it.) :rolleyes1

I'll be keeping you in my thoughts and prayers.

If you haven't already done so, you might want to speak with the professor and explain the situation before you get your exam back. I was never one to ask for my professors help but they might have some way to help the situation.

I can sympathize with your situation. I remember when I took my first college exam (can't remember if it was bio or chem). The key was posted outside after the exam and I went and checked my score and was shocked to see how poorly I did. I've never failed an exam!! I ran back to my room and called my cousin since she was a senior in college. She calmed me down and I was able to enjoy the weekend some (the exam was on Friday). On Monday they posted the grades and with the curve I got a B!

Hang in there and try to have a great weekend! Hopefully it will turn out well for you!! :wizard:

Medical school exams can be extremely disheartening. I'm sending lots of pixie dust!
When I was in med school, the school offered tutoring for students who were struggling. They really did everything in their power to help everyone learn the material and get through. I'm sorry that you aren't having an experience like that.
Even so, when my biological father died 2 weeks before my 1st anatomy exam, I had little sympathy from my professor. The course material was emotionally difficult for me, knowing that my father was dying in an ICU nearly 3000 miles away and then I traveled across the country for the funeral and missed several key days of class. I truly thought that I would fail my anatomy exam. I passed - not with flying colors but at least I didn't have to re-take the exam. Many years later I am a surgeon. :thumbsup2
Medical school and residency can be very lonely and difficult times, even when things are going "well." Hang in there! I know I had several moments where I wanted to quit but I'm so glad that I made it through.

Thinking of you,
Amanda

:grouphug:Hugs to you. Hang in there, you will get through this.

sending lots of hugs your way  I know how difficult college exams can be. They can be extremely stressful and emotional when you don't get the grade you expected. Just hang in there, and know you have all of us here to pick you up when you're feeling down. :)

DHS Flo - sending along more pixie dust for you too! pixiedust:

As terrible as it feels, even if you failed the pathology exam, you're not the first person to do this! Don't feel embarrassed or ashamed in any way.
Many post-sec institutions have counsellors available for the students both for academic and personal guidance. Talking to one of them might help you out since you are away from family.

Take care! :goodvibes

cheers,
:flower3:

Hang in there. One exam at a time. You can get through this.

Good luck and hang in there if this is your dream and passion.:wizard:
