As The World Turns has been cancelled!

The rumor I heard was One Life To Live was next on the chopping block

Uh oh.. I don't watch that one, but it sounds like the stations are on a roll here..:( By this time next year "all" soap operas may be a thing of the past..

I was never an ATWT fan, but I do want to say to all the fans out there that I feel your pain. I'm still in mourning for GL:sad1: I am completely disgusted with P&G. The cast of GL was told on April Fools Day they were done and now ATWT gets the axe right before the holidays. Can they be any more heartless?!

I know that the soaps aren't anything like they used to be and viewership is definitely down, but there are those of us out there that are loyal to these shows and the way they have gone about these cancellations is a complete slap in the face to us.

I agree.. How many times can you keep bringing people back from the dead - because the body was never recovered?

How many times can Ridge bounce back and forth between Brooke and Taylor? :cool1:

How many times can Jack and Carly go round and round? How about the never-ending Lily/Hoden/Damien? :headache:

How many characters can cling to life per month with "subdural hematomas"? :sad1:

What about these?

Woman is pregant but does not know who the father is until child is 2 and ends up in the hospital with life threatening condition.

Woman is pregant and doesn't know who the father is. She and lover never do a paternity test, so 18 years later, they are still playing the same "She could be yours" storyline.

Babies switched at birth

Dearly loved character is killed off, viewers protest, but the writers are stuck because the body was actually discovered and buried. As a solution, writers bring back character as a ghost or better yet, bring back the actor as a long lost twin or just a stranger who happens to look like the now dead character.

Character who suddenly becomes the latest singing sensation (not).

Character who ends up playing a double role (one being themself and the other bring evil). Sort of like the Freaky Friday scenario. I think every soap has done this.

Someone floats into town, becomes a poolboy/garderner/farmhand for a rich family and instantly either gets an exectutive job, marries one of the employers, or finds out they are related to the employers.

A regular character does something criminal like kill, abuse, rape, kidnap, etc and within a few years, everyone forgets it ever happened and the criminal gains the reputation as a model citizen/loving spouse/caring parent.

It is as if there is only on doctor in the entire city because everyone is a patient. That doctor is always on call in the ER and does everyones surgeries. Everyone uses the same gynecologist.

There also seems to only be one lawyer and one police officer/detective in the city. The lawyer is an expert in everything from divorces to business dealings to murders. The police officer/detective is always on call and handles everyones criminal investigations.

History is constantly changing. Jack on Y&R has walked around for decades crying about how all he wanted was a child of his own. Ummm....forget Vietnam and the child you fathered? The search to find him? How that now grown son showed up in town and his mother and little sister ran the local restaurant? They disappeared and he continued to jump from relationship to relationship crying about how all he ever wanted was a child of his own.

I understand the need to create storylines and create new character interactions, but the way they age children has always bugged me. They never make the parents age the same way. A 25 year old has a child and within 5 years the kid is 19. Mom, on the other hand, is 30 and still having kids. Her grandchildren will end up being older than she.

Lots of amnesia storylines.

I no longer watch soaps after moving here 5 years ago. Y&R and B&B were almost 2 years behind and in Italian. On American military satellite, GL and General Hospital were on at 5am. 2 years ago they got Y&R, but I was then 3 years behind and things had changed too much that it was too much of an effort to get into it again.

What I miss the most is Christmas time on soaps.....

How many times can this be THE BEST CHRISTMAS EVER? :rotfl2:

I wouldn't be surprised. DH and I watched that for many, many years, but gave it up. We tried to get back into it a couple of years ago, but the writing was so bad and I hated the Jess/Tess multiple personality story line. I have turned past it a couple of times and it seems like its still the same crappy story lines that they have had for the past couple of years.............such a shame because the writing used to be so good.

This is a little extra sad for me. My Mom is home bound and a not quite all there anymore. This is the only show she watches because "she knows these people". Her mother watched this show, and I remember watching it as a teenager myself. I watch it every Wed. with her when I bring her lunch. Funny how once a week pretty much keeps me caught up on the story line :rotfl:

I feel like I have grown up with Lily and Holden, but I can imagine how my Mom feels in her somewhat altered existence these days. I hope she doesn't hear about it for a while.

That really is sad..:( Never thought about folks like your mom.. Although my mom has never watched soaps, as she got older she couldn't deal with all of the game shows.. They were too "hyper" and noisy for her..

Did your mom ever watch Dallas or Knots Landing? If so, when the soaps go "poof" maybe you could start buying all of those years of past seasons for her..:santa:

Thanks C.Ann. Yes, I'll need to find a good DVD series. The only other thing she will watch is "Everyone Loves Raymond " DVD's my Dad bought but it is rare - but she never misses ATWT. It is sadly the constant and highlight of her day. I cannot be late for lunch because at 1:00 she will get up from whatever she is doing, lunch finished or not, and go to the family room and turn on the TV to watch it.

The cancellation of ATWT was front page news on the BBC website today. It's been years since I last watched ATWT, but my mom has been watching it since 1983 and I know that she will miss it. I was always fond of the Lucinda Walsh character.

She plays her part great - doesn't she?

I don't like the new Lily at all - was so used to the "original"..
