As God is My Witness, I'll Never be Hungry Again - Finished w/lots of pics!!

I have to say this has been a fun read! I will add a little something too your drug induced haze at the CA Grill....a French Martini has Champagne in it in addition to the vodka and chambord! I was at the bar there in October and saw them making one and then my mother made me get one because she wanted to try it. 4 martinis later I am sure I felt like you did with 1 and a darvocet!!! Good times!! :)

Before I go any further I should explain something...today was one of those days where all I wanted to do was eat. For some reason my Crohns disease really messes with my appetite - I'm either really hungry or I take a couple of bites and then push away from the table so as not to have a reversal of fortune. This ended up being a "FEED ME!" day, just in case you wonder why I needed to eat lunch, and a mickey bar, and grand tea within a four-hour period of time. It also explains why I didn't want to cancel the dinner reservation at Bistro Paris (but I did) and why I dragged Jason over to the Boardwalk in search of dinner three hours after finishing our very hearty tea and why we ordered room service after that.

Jason has a nickname for me when this happens: Remorseless Eating Machine.

So, now that you all know more about my digestive issues than you ever cared to know...where were we?

Ahhh, the Yacht Club Galley. After our tasty breakfast Jason and I wanted to go to the Magic Kingdom. Somehow in our entire trip we'd never made it over there during daylight and we were determined to visit before heading over to the Grand Floridian for our tea. The parents decided to go to the Animal Kingdom. There will be more about that later, but allow me to just throw this out for your consideration: when you know that you have to be somewhere by 2:10 PM and it's a somewhere that you really wanted to be because you asked your patient and loving daughter if you could come along, why would you chose to go to the one place that's practically the WDW equivalent of the dark side of the moon?

Parents...the children I'll never have. :teeth:

While playing in the Magic Kingdom Jason and I decided to try Columbia Harbor House for a light lunch - if you ask me (and no one did) it's really easy to walk right on by this place without ever seeing it, especially if there is a lot of traffic between Fantasyland and Americatown. We were very pleasantly surprised by this place, which is Counter Service above and beyond the usual hotdog / hamburger offering. And the interior is dark and cool and actually very large - they even have an upstairs dining room.

For second breakfast, Jason ordered the Captain's Special, which was Fried Chicken Strips and Fish served with a choice of French Fries or Carrots.
DSC01652.jpg

As you can see, Jason is a fry-man. He said this was very good and while I did not try any of it I do remember that it smelled delicious, especially the fish.

As for me...my second breakfast was success, baby!
DSC01651.jpg

That's right...A Tuna Fish Sandwich!!!
And when you order this option for some reason they'll give you two bags of carrots and I love raw carrots with my tuna fish. They were telling the truth -dreams really do come true here. ;)

This was the best tuna sandwich I had all week. Uh...well, now that I think about it this was only the second one I had during our ten-day visit, but no matter - it was the best! The only thing that could have possibly surpassed it would have been the Tuna Pita at the ESPN Club and all I can say is tremble in fear, oh tasty tuna because this old crohn is coming to getcha next May.

Once we were finished with our lunch we played around some more at the MK - it was really a light day there, crowd-wise. Before leaving I had to have a Mickey Bar. Earlier in our stay it was too hot for one of these and then it became too cold. But one cannot go to WDW without partaking of the sweet, Dove Chocolate-coated ice cream bar shaped like Mickey's head (I'm starting to pick up on a theme here...) and so, I ordered it and I ate it and it was good.
DSC01656.jpg

Plankton seems very excited by the idea of a Mickey Bar, but I think it's more the idea of a head on a stick that he likes. ;)

And now, to tea....Jason and I like to finish out a trip to WDW by visiting the Gardenview Lounge at the Grand Floridian. It's a quiet, relaxing environment in a beautiful setting and the food is tasty and filling. My parents tried this a few years back with us and my mom really enjoyed it, hence the reservation for 4 "adults" instead of 2.

Before parting ways after breakfast I reminded the parental unit that they needed to meet us in the lobby of the GF by 2PM. Please do not be late, I said, because afternoon tea is served in a relatively short time-span and I have arranged a surprise for you. Remember - 2PM, Grand Floridian, tea, surprise, good times not involving organzied or unorganized gambling...don't be late!

Well, Jason and I weren't late. We checked in a bit early and told the very nice lady at the podium that we were waiting on my parents. She asked if we were celebrating anything and I said, well, my birthday was last week.

Check out what happens when my mom isn't around to give off her cheer-dampening vibe: I was given a birthday button and a lovely pink rose (it matched my shirt!). And they also did something else later on but I don't want the story to get out of sequence so you're just going to have to wait for it.

The restaurant manager happened to be out there while we were waiting, too, and he saw our STL Mickey pins and we chatted baseball for a bit - really nice guy, especially when it turns out he's rootin' for the redbirds!

After waiting for 20 minutes Jason and I both were getting impatient and annoyed - nice podium lady offered us our choice of tables and we decided that we were going to have tea regardless of where the ancients had disappeared to.

DSC01661.jpg

While we were still waiting on the "kids", I decided that I needed a drink. Jason and I always order the Grand Tea when we're at the Gardenview, which comes with a glass of champagne, but I wanted to try the champagne cocktail, which is champagne, bitters, and a sugar cube. Very tasty - here, take a look.
DSC01662.jpg

Can you ever have too much champagne? I don't think so.

Hey, look what the cat dragged in! And only 30 minutes late!!
DSC01666.jpg

Jon was apparently irritated with my mom. And my mom apparently was irriated with me. I was irritated with them both, and Jason thought the whole thing was hysterical.
DSC01667.jpg

You wanna know why they were so late?

No, there was not a WDW transportation snafu.

Uh, uh...they didn't forget where they were supposed to be or even what time they were supposed to be there.

Are you sitting down? Oh, yeah...that was a stupid question, wasn't it?

Turns out they were late because they had lunch at the Animal Kingdom around 12:30. You're right, that should not have caused them to be so late. But...when Jon ordered his CS lunch he took the frozen lemonade (not a real lemon anywhere in it!) as his dessert option. The only problem with that is that he didn't want any dessert just then, so he insisted that they go from the AK back over to the Beach Club Villas and drop off the frozen psuedo-lemon thirst quencher before traveling over to the Grand Floridian to meet us for our reservation.

Jon's a smart man - PhD smart - but not even he can bend the WDW space-time continuem. :lmao:

As you may have deduced from the grumpy pics of my parents, everyone ordered the Grand Tea. I highly recommend this option because for $25 per person you will each get the following: Your choice of tea, a variety of tea sandwiches, scones, a jam tart, delightful devonshire cream to smear on the scones and tart, a choice of tea pastries, English trifle, or strawberries and cream (in season), and a glass of champagne.

The choices of tea are varied - they actually have a really cool looking tea chest that they will offer to you when you first order your tea so that you can smell each one and get a better idea of what it might taste like. I'm boring - I always get the Chamomile tea which has no caffeine in it and is described thusly: tea with the flavor of ripe apples made with the finest Chamomile flowers from Egypt. Jason ordered something along the lines of a Jasmine Spice tea - he always goes for the spicier teas.

Here's a picture of our little tea table with the tea service and fragrant beverages.
DSC01663.jpg

Most of the teas are served traditionally, in a tea pot, with the leaves steeping in hot water. Jason's tea (and I wish we could remember the name) was the only one I've seen served in a French press. He really liked this selection, so if you like a stronger, spicier tea with floral overtones you might want to try something like this, whatever it's called. Jon ordered a Russian Tea and my mom ordered Raspberry Tea.

Hee hee hee...about this time nice podium lady happened to wander by and as she did so she waved and said, "Nice of you to show up, mom and dad." :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Maybe that's why my mom is shooting daggers at me while she sips her sparkling beverage. BTW, here's a picture of said sparking beverage when it's first delivered to the table:
DSC01665.jpg

Look, it comes with a strawberry on the rim! Isn't that a nice romantic touch? And how about the look on my face? See, I told you I was annoyed with the Grimace. ;)

And in case you haven't ever been here for tea, they will place a velvet tea caddy over your tea pot to keep it warm. BriarRosie was right - it looks like something the Pope or one of his Cardinals would wear while leading a prayer service. Next time we go there I think I will wear it on my head in tribute to her.

Ready for some food? First comes the selection of tea sandwiches:
DSC01668.jpg

It's a little hard to tell from this shot, but there are 4 sandwich halves - egg salad, watercress and cucumber, a salmon paste, and I think some sort of shrimp salad. Those two little guys on the side are an onion tart and a meat of unspecified origin.

I traded the watercress / cucumber sandwich and the onion tart to my mom for her egg salad and half a flute of champagne. I'd say I got the better part of that deal!

Next up is the "scone" and jam tart:
DSC01671.jpg

I placed the word scone in paranthases because I think this is really just a biscuit with golden raisins baked into it. I'm no expert on scones, so I could be wrong, but doesn't this look like a biscuit to you? Don't worry - it was really good, soft and warm! And what you do is spread that cream over it and then smear the jam from that little jar on top of the cream and "scone" and then you eat it while rolling your eyes and making yummy noises in the back of your throat. If you have any cream left over smear it on your jam tart and chow on that puppy - wash it down with some champagne...bubbly good times!

Still hungry? Good, because now it's time for dessert. You will usually be given a choice between tea pastries or English trifle - once in a while strawberries and cream are also an option, so I like to mention it as a possibility. We all chose the trifle, which is angel food cake layered with a pudding-like substance and jam and topped with tons o'whipped cream.
DSC01672.jpg

Let's talk about this for a moment, shall we? In years past the trifle at the Gardenview Lounge has been the bomb - so good in fact that any other trifle I've ever tried has never measured up to it. This trifle on this day was, dare I say it....trifling. Not good at all. I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they were just having a bad day.

But this time I didn't care so much about the trifle because it was time for my surprise!!! And in honor of the many birthdays that I celebrated on this trip, look at what the GF staff gave me that afternoon along with my surprise:
DSC01675.jpg

No, silly, they didn't give me a smiling clone of my mom (although that's a good guess). They gave us both Happy Birthday tiaras and asked everyone in the lounge to sing the birthday song to us. My mom is smiling because she got something for free and because now she's celebrating her birthday which is only five months away.

She's also smiling because of the little prezzie I ordered for her and Jon:
DSC01673.jpg

That's right...Cinderella's Slipper! A white chocolate slipper filled with vanilla creme mousse dotted with raspberries and a raspberry-sauce filled tear drop for dipping. Oh, and in case that's not enough, there's a dark chocolate teardrop filled with milk chocolate mousse on the other side of the plate. This is so very yummy, and to the best of my knowledge it is only available at Grand Floridian restaurants or at TS restaurants within the MK. At $15 per dessert you may think it's a little pricey, but I love to order this because it's such a signature dessert and it's just good fun.

Can't wait to read more and I can't believe how much food you can put in the little body of yours.

Sorry about this, I had to split the post - too many pictures.

Anyway, here's a picture of the slipper dessert I ordered for Jason and me after the GF staff "birthday-ed" it up:
DSC01674.jpg

If you've never ordered one of these I suggest you give it a try some time - very tasty. Once we finish eating it Jason has his own tradition that goes something like this:

"Are you a diabetic?"

To which I reply, "No."

And then he chuckles and says, "Well, you are now."

Sorry, it's a Simpsons reference. Anyone else out there remember Grandma Plopwell's Pudding? :teeth:

From here we waddled back over to the Beach Club to begin packing everything up to go home. By about 6:30 guess who was hungry? I won't linger over the details of that little shed on the Boardwalk that was selling "hotdogs." Suffice to say that this was the first time in a long while that I wondered if my tubesteak in a bun might not have been made from boiled shoe leather. My advice - just say no to those places when you're wandering the Boardwalk.

We went back the villa and finished packing while watching Game 5 of the World Series. We were even able to watch part of Illuminations from our balcony and could hear the entire soundtrack, which always makes me weepy. So that meant that we had to do something to cheer me up while celebrating what was looking ever more like a World Series Title for the Birds...it's time for room service!

We love to order cookies and milk from the Yacht / Beach Club amenities menu and so this is how we closed out the trip:
DSC01677.jpg

Two chocolate chip cookies, an oatmeal raisin cookie, and a peanut butter cookie, washed down with a glass of cold milk and some Plankton juice on the side.

This showed up around 10:30 that evening - my mom wandered out, saw what we had, and wrinkled her nose like she was smelling three-week-old cat litter.

"Why'd you order that?"

Our response, "It's kind of a tradition we have when we stay here. Besides, you're supposed to have cookies and milk before going to bed to induce sweet dreams. You want some?"

"Not milk and cookies. I'd take some nachos right about now but not cookies."

"Nachos?"

"Yeah."

"You want nachos at 10:30 in the evening on the night before we're flying home? That's just nasty."

"Well I'd rather have a cheesesteak sandwich but it's not on the room service menu."

I rose from the couch and threw a pillow at her. "Go to your room!!!"

Parent-child role reversal - it's not a myth. :teeth:

And so ends the WDW voyage of digestive discovery. I'll have one more post to wrap things up - some dining plan comments and that kind of stuff. As always, thanks for taking the time to read and relive the experience with me. Feel free to ask any questions and I'll do my best to answer them for you.

Be well and happy holidays!!

Brenda :goodvibes

Brenda:
As is with all your other reports, this one was also truly top notch. Unfortunately whenever we have gone to the World of Disney, we eat the boxes and boxes of granola bars, cereal bars, dried fruit and pretzels that my wife packs for the occasion, plus the occasional character meal at Chef Mickey or Crystal Palace. She does not like to venture into such a world of culinary delights. I could hear it now,
Her: What should I eat?
Me: I don't know what do you feel like?
Her: I don't know.
Me: Well, how about "X"
Her: Do you think I would like that?
Me: I don't know but it sounds good.
Her: No...I don't think so.
Repeat the above about 27 times.

Anyhow, thank you again for taking the time to post. I understand the time and effort to do so. Once again I have been able to live a wonderful experience vicariously through an outstanding report.

The tea was beautiful! and your Mom looks born to wear a tiara, see how her eyes lit up?

Did Cinderella's slipper taste good? do you actually eat the slipper or just the contents?

I am sad that your report is all over now, you really need to go back soon or at least report what you are eating from home ~ with pics. (ie) What's for lunch today?

a few replies before I leave to go work in my dining room today...

Auroalark - congratulations!!

MickeyisanNDfan - that makes a lot more sense, now...champagne in the French Martini (I feel so dumb). You're right - they are good times indeed!

Grumpydude - that's the conversation that Jay and I used to have...slowly but surely he's been able to increase my food horizon (psst, here's a secret - alcohol helps!). Thanks for reading - I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Cass - do you think that all I needed to do was give my mom a tiara on the first day of the trip instead of the last? Hmmmmm...I will have to ponder this further. She does look like she's finally having a good time, doesn't she? I hope you enjoy your tea later this month - be sure to tell them it's your birthday!!

As for the slipper, yes...eat it - it's delicious, epecially the mousse inside of it.

Oh, and for breakfast this morning Jay made waffles - plain old round ones - with some strawberries on the side and a big ol' pot of cafe du mond coffee.

Catch you all later, and thanks again!

I MUST try this!!! Chambord & champagne is my FAVORITE drink! Awesome! Thanks!!!

What a fabulous ending to your WDW vacation! :goodvibes The GF tea looks yummy! I tried to get reservations for tea in a couple of weeks, but they were all booked! :sad2: Oh well, maybe next time. Thanks again for writing this TR! I've had fun reading it and your pictures are great!

I've loved reading your dining reports - you hit some great places!
I also love your mascot, and I'm happy to see we're not the only adults who have one on vacation!

I do have some bad news for you though - as of October, the ESPN Club no longer has that wonderful tuna pita on their menu - SHAME! I think we need a grassroots campaign to bring it back!!!

This is terrible news! I'm never never never never never never ever going back there...that'll teach ''em.

Seriously, that was the only thing on their menu that I liked (except for the beer.) I guess I'll just have to bring my own tuna next May and ask them for a canopener.

Okay. So there is NOTHING better then staying home from school sick as a dog and sitting on your butt in front of the computer and partaking in some FABULOUS/HILARIOUS writing and a gargantuous amount of FOOD PORN. Holy Moly. Im sad that this is over. Your dining report was AMAZING! Your hilarious and I really enjoyed your writing - not to mention your pictures which were FANTASTIC! .. i cant wait till you go again just so I can partake in another amazing adventure with you as my host!

Just a couple things that I put in my coughing/sneezing/snuffy body while I read this report - 5 glasses of water, string cheese, 4 ritz crackers, a bowl of pretzels, and one fish and broccoli lean cuisine. Let me just say it didnt do the trick while I was reading all about your delicious rendezvous. It will have to do though I guess!

It was great while it lasted!! Thanks for entertaining me!!

Your scone WAS a scone - a traditional English-style scone. I used to describe it to people as a sweet biscuit when I lived in the UK. American scones are usually triangles though equally tasty.

The tea looked great! Must go. Must go. :thumbsup2

Oooo that GF Tea time looks fabulous! I need to try that someday. I'll make sure to tell them that its my birthday too :teeth:

B, can I go with you to WDW next time? I need a hostess with the mostess to show me where to eat. I'm very naive when it comes to food, I only eat what I know and I'm afraid to try new things. This review has made me want to eat anything in sight :thumbsup2

Thanks again and now you can get started on your trippie! :woohoo:

How did the mystery meat taste, by the way? is it like a pate' or something?

Still diggin' the report, the last round of photos almost made me want to change our Mother's Day ressie from CA Grill to GF Tea. We will be there the week before you in May, our anniversary is the 18th and my in-laws are celebrating early, their's is in August. Looking forward to the trip report!! Happy Holidays. :goodvibes

Thanks for such a wonderful - and yummy - TR! I have enjoyed "devouring" every post. We had a fun family vacation and did enjoy the CA Grill together. Still, we'll look forward to re-booking V&A's (remember our kids got sick and we had to cancel?) and if I can convice my mother to come for part of our next, still to be agreed upon trip, I know she'd love tea at the GF. My parents raised us in a very British household, so I can tell it looks very genuine! (Experiencing clotted creme and jam on scones was the first time I ever really regretted being lactose intolerant!)

Enjoy!

Brenda, when is your anniversary? Mine is 5/16. Chef's Table looks incredible! Congrats.

The slipper looks amazing! So do you order that before the trip or once you get there? How do you do this? Which restaurants?

I hate to see this report end! It has been great!

Yes, I enjoyed the GF Tea pics! And although I am laughing that you'd
do a tribute to me with the tea cozy, I actually did as a tribute to a friend
from the RADP newsgroup. He was the one who had the "pope hat"
reference. :)

I also enjoy the tuna sandwich at Columbia Harbor House. If you hadn't
posted about it, I was going to suggest it for another trip. :thumbsup2

And you're also not the only one with mascot photos. I've done my own
mascot photos. One time I brought Millennium Mickey (beanie) with me
during the Millennium Celebration, but my favorite was letting Figment
(another beanie) escape Epcot to enjoy the Disneyland resort.

Here's a couple for your enjoyment:

Figment was at Disney's California Adventure and thought he'd imitate the
Grizzly Peak:

FigmentPeak.jpg

Figment's innocent ride on a cannon in Town Square...

CannonFodder.jpg

Turned into a nightmare of epic proportions...no, Figment, not City Hall!!

Cannonblast-1.jpg

I better stop before I'm accused of hijacking your thread. ;)

Bravo for your many pics and food porn. :)
