As Christians, Any WDW attractions to AVOID?

I also think if people found her question, the way she said it, whatever... disrespectful.......maybe didn't have to participate in it?????I just think she is REALLY getting flamed, and she just wanted help.

MemoryMakers2669 - Can you please stop asking me the same question over and over? You have quoted my opinion in 3-4 separate posts and I have answered it to the best of my ability. I'm sorry you don't understand what I'm saying. Now on with the discussion.

Oh... the Jungle cruise has the native headshinker... not sure if that's magic. And there are the Magic Carpets of Aladdin which are supposed to be enchanted objects.

Oh... and Cinderella's Surprise Celebration has magic... but today's the last day of that so nevermind. Not sure about Cinderellabration...

...probably not the kind the OP is thinking of. You see, I was baptised on April 14, 1968 when I wasn't even 4 months old. I have been raised and instructed in the Lutheran faith since then and have known God's presence in my life through Jesus Christ all along.

That said, I do find the OP's question to be offensive as it implies that no opinions are valid unless they share the experience she has had.

One is much poorer for the experience if one avoids all that might possibly offend or suggest a different point of view. For the record, the ultra-fundie literalist believer would probably feel a need to avoid these attractions:
  • Magic Carpets of Aladdin -- magical Islamic stuff.
  • Enchanted Tiki Room -- representation of heathen idols.
  • Country Bear Jamboree -- talking bears.
  • Hall of Presidents -- Bill Clinton is there, but he no longer talks.
  • Haunted Mansion -- ghosts, ghoulies, spirits, paranormal activity.
  • It's a Small World -- representation of unity and equality despite cultural and religious differences.
  • Cinderella's Surprise Celebration -- witch.
  • Ariel's Grotto -- mermaids and magic.
  • Dumbo the Flying Elephant -- any elephant that can fly can't be godly.
  • Snow White - witch, dwarves, magic.
  • Mad Tea Party - supportive of "Alice in Wonderland" with "obvious" references to drug culture.
  • Peter Pan's Flight -- fairies, pixies, mermaids, magic flying ships.
  • Mickey's Philharmagic -- Mickey as sorceror; Donald Duck showing appreciation for Islamic culture.
  • Space Mountain -- suggestion that the earth could possibly be round.

And that's just the Magic Kingdom!!!

Walt Disney was a Christian man, but probably not the kind the OP would consider Christian. The early Disney animators were Christians and the Gospel message of Jesus Christ can be found throughout classic Disney animation -- even in the works of Sorceror Mickey and the temper tantrums of Donald Duck. How jaded are we if we cannot find comparisons between an image of God and that of the sorceror Yensid? How blind can we be if we cannot see a story in which the character of Mickey can be equated to our own desire to be like God and control the forces of nature? We mess up and realize that we must allow God to be God and we cannot.

Just as the Holy Bible was never meant for a literal reading, Walt Disney's myths and creations teach us a greater truth than can be contained within the word "story." Read the stories again, watch the movies one more time, take another ride and discover a greater truth that leads us closer to God through Jesus Christ.

I'm with you bytheblood- I think there are too many misunderstandings at this point.

I just think she is REALLY getting flamed, and she just wanted help.

I think we are helping. I posted every attraction I could think of that contains Sorcerer Mickey, witches, etc, and so did several other posters. Then the OP came back, posted again, and basically said she didn't want to hear from us because we weren't the correct type of Christians.

This thread has turned into a joke now.

Erika - I really like you a lot and I am sorry that you and others were offended. You are a very nice person and I have always liked you.

Mods - Please close this thread...it has really broken away from what the OP was looking for and some of our Dis Board friends are really not having fun with this one.

RoyalCanadian, I really enjoyed reading your post. I wish I could get my feelings across in a clear way like that.

Ok, now who's being disrespectful?? Just because you don't agree with his post don't laugh in his face. That's really not nice.

I think you guys are passing each other in mid-air with this respect discussion. Honestly, you're both right. OP was asking for the opinions of those with whom she most closely identifies. That's her choice, of course, and it's her best way of getting information that she's likely to find useful (simply because people she identifies with are more likely to give her the information she's looking for)......

IMO the best place for the OP to ask this question should be at her place of worship. This is where she will get the Christian point of view that she is looking for. Obviously everyone on this board has different views based on their religious affiliation. Personally I feel sorry for the kids - can you imagine going to WDW and not being allowed to experience all of the MAGIC. :confused3 :confused3 :confused3 . It will be like taking them into an ice cream parlor and telling them they can't eat any ice cream only vegetables.

Oh Erika - I am not laughing at him. It is because this subject is just going in so many different directions....it has turned into a joke.

I know what you're saying... it's just that people at her place of worship might not know as much as we do about Disney. I just think that there have been a lot of misunderstandings in this thread (from all perspectives).

I agree, the OP wanted info on the rides and attractions... not a flaming for her beliefs.

I guess that just goes to show it's hard to really understand what people are trying to say when they type.

I agree with rapriebe.

As a non-christain, I am not offended by the OP's original question. She should feel free to ask the opinions of a specific group or sub-group. However, she should also be aware that others from outside that sub-group can and will post to a question on an open BB. Now, it appears that members of this sub-group are doing their best to shut down the discussion with calls for having the thread closed. I find that far more offensive.

ITA!!! This is why I think this thread should be closed.
No offense or disrespect to anyone.

Hi there....forgive me for commenting when I'm coming in sooo late, but as I skim these posts I question comes to mind.

There was mention of some Christians wanting to avoid all allusions to magic and witches (specifically the one in snow White). What I wonder is do these same folks celebrate Christmas with a tree, or Easter with eggs and bunnies?

I'm interested to learn.

Thanks,
Cathryn~

Life is just too short and precious to spend anytime worrying about being offended over such trivial things.

IMHO, life is also too short and precious to spend time worrying about if you're going to be offended by Sorcerer Mickey, Fantasmic, Snow White, Ellen, and a mention of evolution. Christians of all denominations have differing views - sadly, the thing I see lacking in many is tolerance. How is it helping a child grow up if you shelter them from things you perceive as evil or un-Christian like at a place like Disney World? I have to wonder how you explain to the children why you don't visit these attractions.

Someday I hope to have children who will be brought up to see different points of view, religions, cultures, beliefs, and people. They will not be raised to form opinions based on my own nor will they be sheltered from an attraction at Disney World because there's a witch or ghost featured in it. They will be raised to treat people equally and with respect - regardless of their race, age, sex, disability, nationality, and/or so-called "sexual preference". I want them to ask questions and prompt discussion.

But that's just me and my two cents. :wizard:
