The Incredibles' Performance Won't Be Incredible, Say Analysts
"Analysts doubt that Pixar's latest CGI movie, The Incredibles, which opens on Friday, will achieve the same degree of success at the box office as its previous film, Finding Nemo, Investor's Business Daily reported today (Thursday). The newspaper observed that the film will be facing tougher competition from other family films than other Pixar movies had. Among the rivals: Warner Bros.' The Polar Express (Nov. 10), Paramount's The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, and Paramount's Jim Carrey starrer, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. Harris Nesbitt Gerard analyst Jeffrey Logsdon predicted that The Incredibles will gross $225 million domestically and close to $500 million worldwide -- ordinarily a huge result, but well below the $865 million for Pixar's Finding Nemo. It would also be well below the record (for an animated film) $882 million earned by DreamWorks' Shrek 2."

He could be right.

But competition is only one factor. Much more important is the appeal of the various films mentioned, and I'm afraid I can't trust that an analyst knows what will be a hit and what will not.

By focusing so heavily on the number of films out, he could be significantly wrong in either direction.

Just got back from the movie. I had a blast -- LOVED IT!! However, there were adult themes (teenage alienation, parental involvement issues, death, torture, etc.) and there were (long) stretches where the kids (4 and 7) got fidgety. I would say that this movie may not appeal as universally as Nemo, Monsters, or TS 1 & 2, so it may not have the legs of the others. That could be it's biggest hurdle.

I will say that it is my favorite Pixar film so far.

PS - not impressed by the "Cars" trailer. You never know by the trailers, though.

The Cars trailer was terrible. I haven't liked most of Pixar's trailers over the years though. I have yet to dislike one of their movies, so they get the benefit of the doubt from me for now.

I went to the 9:15 show last night. The theater was only 3/4 full for the Incredibles. I was concerned. The entire audience broke out into applause though.

I was expecting a sell out crowd.

Loved the movie though. I hope it does really really well.

We went last night. Was playing in two theaters, and both were sold out for every show except for the 10:30 PM showing.

One local paper gave the movie 4 stars.... the other 3.5



It was packed !!! Loved it, and also hated preview for "Cars"...

Went to TDS this morning... good to see that merchandising made a lot of "Incredible" clothes for adults... picked up a long-sleeve T, and DW got a Mrs. Incredible shirt

Loved the movie although a wee bit long in the middle but was worth the payoff. Anyone else think that Syndrome looked like Heat Miser? Cars looked so awful that I would safely say that Pixar has jumped the shark. We went to a sold out show this morning. I won't see it again in the theater but will buy the DVD!

I went to see The Incredibles last night. Came away with my first "So What" from a Pixar release.

I never connected with any character and I stick to my guns that the action-genre just doesn't work well with animation.

I won't throw out any spoilers, I'll just leave it that I would give it:

4 stars for technical achievement - beautiful work!
2 stars for story (not that great of a story line that never improved and telegraphed it's punches)
2.5 stars for character (better in the beginning, then really weak only to become really, really, weak)

I had high hopes for this release. I really liked the trailer with Mr. Incredible trying to get into costume. Unfortunately, the film didn't live up to the trailer.

The movie could have used a bit more humor. But the animation was super and my attention only wandered a bit during the middle. It was long!

My 11 year proclaimed it better than Bug's Life and Toy Story 2 but behind Toy Story and WAY behind Nemo if that tells you anything.

I'll reserve judgment on Cars because so little was shown. I did not enjoy the cartoon shown prior to the movie which was a let down because I normally really love these. It just seemed hokey to me.

First estimates of Weekend Box Office are in. 70,678,000. That puts it just ahead of Nemo's opening if it holds. Nice.
