Arrival day and trip plan

We're throwing caution to the wind and going to MK on our arrival day. We are there for 5 days and have a "free" 5th day, so I'm going to try to get FP for the MSEP and/or Wishes so we don't let those FP+ go to waste. My hope is that we'll have good spots that we won't have to fight for and can just show up for the late night entertainment.

...And this is totally me, but I don't get it when people say to have a relaxing night at Disney Springs. I know it's not as crazy as the parks, but a crowded outdoor mall doesn't sound relaxing to me. Check out this pic from easywdw.com. Ugh.

relaxing, yes. it's a stroll by the water, music everywhere, restaurants with outdoor seating to watch the world go by. It's not an outdoor mall once you get past the Market Place. We never linger there. Just sayin' ;)

I've only been once so I'm no judge, just not my thing. I'm no fan of any of the beach malls I live near either for relaxation.

My vote is hang out at your pool resort, then do a character meal, Hoop de doo or Disney Springs (your boys might like TREX even though it's not "good" by adult standards.)

It will be hot, hot hot when you're there and I'm guessing your kids will want to swim a lot. I also don't think park hoppers are worth it with little kids. Our last trip (Sept 2013) we had them but never used them. Luckily they were discounted tickets through my husband's work so it wasn't an extra expense.

Did OP say they already had park hoppers for Fri-Wed? I might be mistaken but I thought I read that. If so, definitely hit a park. I vote MK, but that's just my personal opinion. Our arrival day is a Saturday - earlier in the day than your arrival time - and MK is definitely a non-recommended park that day, but we are still going to do it. I want to introduce my boys to Disney through MK. It'll be busy but with FP+ and riding during parades and fireworks, we'll be ok.

I would definitely go to a park and I would suggest MK on the first visit/first day for sure. We always land right around 1pm and are always checked in and in our first park between 4 and 5 (we rent a car, which is a little faster usually, but I would still think you could be in a park by 5), which gives you a good few hours to take in several attractions.

Nope, I do not see a mention of what kind of tickets they have.

We always hit the park with the latest hours on our first day. In 2015 it was EPCOT and in 2013 it was MK. As much as I'd like to be at MK the first day, I also want my monies worth. I like to go on arrival day because we drive for 15 hours so I like to get moving. And I like to feel like I'm getting a "head start" on our trip. There's a lot to do! :)
