Arrest for Couponing Fraud

WOW!! It's good to see it's enforced...it's stealing, plain and simple. I wonder if J'Aimie will be next !!! :confused3

It is nice to see they doing this. If I was Ja'ime I would be quaking in my boots.

I haven't seen what J'aime did but have read some stories. I think the big difference is that the article that OP linked was that a person was showing how to make coupons. I'm not saying what J'aime did isn't wrong, but she didn't commit that kind of fraud. They seem to be two different things. The person in the article was making up bogus coupons that the stores would never see money for and showing others how to do this. J'aime seems to be using real coupons for items that they aren't meant for. The store is still getting money for them (I haven't seen anything that disputes this at least).

Makes you a little nervous to print out your own coupons.

Why? If you are getting them from reputable sites, you should be fine. The ones that are too good to be true, usually are. I never fell for the ones that came in the email, free starbucks, free m&m's, etc. Also, a quick google search will usually tell you if something isn't legit.

Ja'ime has little to nothing to worry about. What she does is nothing on the scale of what this arrest was over.

I thought she said her stash was worth over $14,000?

I'm not saying it was on the scale of J'aime, I'm just pointing out that it's interesting that there is attention being paid to coupons.

I don't think she's questioning the value of her items, just what the arrest is over. J'aime uses hers improperly, but they are still real coupons. This person was making them and showing others how to make them. Two different things. Like counterfeit checks or money, the company gets burned by fraudulent coupons. With J'aime the store still gets it's money even though she used them improperly. It is still a valid coupon.

The above post got me wondering if he was on the show. Honestly, I've only caught one clip, maybe half of a show. I did find this:

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/documents/internet/fbi-busts-4chan-man-extreme-couponing-098561

Shows a picture of the guy who is charged with this crime. Someone who watches the show, has he been on extreme couponing?

ETA: I found another article:

Kudos for P&G for stepping up and not letting the little guy take the hit. An unlinked article that I read, said that a lot of mom & pop stores took the coupons. P&G covered all the costs and reimbursed the stores that took them. :thumbsup2

I do not think he was on the show I haven't seen all the episodes. I wonder how long they have been after him and if it had anything to do with the show that they started the investigation.

I thought when you posted that you thought he had been on the show. The partial clip I did see was of a younger guy that donated all the items he couponed for, for a charity. I wasn't sure if that was the guy, vaguely remembered what he looked like, could see that was not him. I don't know if he was on the show or not, doubtful I think

I did edit my other post, found more info. From that article it said: "Court records say people redeemed $200,000 worth of coupons in Decemeber 2010 for Tide detergent." Not sure if his how-to manual got him busted or the free Tide coupons did. So I guess at the very latest, he's been on the radar since December.

It seems that since the show coupons and related things are everywhere! I checked TLC page and I didn't find any of his info, so I guess not on the show, but I could assure you some of the people on the show used his fake coupons :confused3.

A question and a comment:

1. The website says that the guy insisted that fake-coupon-makers always post their creative wares on non-permanant sites so that they couldn't be traced. Let's say you're a person who wishes to make fake coupons. WHY would you want to post them on sites at all? I can see making them for your own benefit (not condoning, but it is logical), but why would you risk being caught by "putting them out there"?

2. They said one person was fined $2500 for using a fake coupon -- ouch! -- even though he didn't know it was fake. That's scary. Surely this situation included extinuating circumstances! I can't imagine someone being fined for trying to get .25 off a can of beans and not knowing that the coupon was fake.
