Someone broke into DH car and stole the front plate of his stereo. I can't find a replacemet online, so I will have to have a new radio put in.

If you've had one put in recently, how much did it cost and where did you have it done? Not looking for anything super duper, it's just a car he drives back and forth to work.

TIA

First thing is to contact you insurance company and let them know. This is covered by your Comprehensive which probably has a very low deductible. Also, a Comprehensive claim is not considered as something at-fault, so it does not affect your relationship (or pricing) with the insurance company.

I wish people would learn to leave things that do not belong to them alone:mad:. You may want to check out Best buy, they usually have sales on radios and installation:goodvibes

We don't have Comp. as this is a 2003 Dodge Neon that we bought 6 years ago, but thank you for your response. I never would have thought about that if it happened in my car.

I will check out Best Buy, just hoping to get a round about number so I know if I am getting taken. :( I too wish they would have left his car alone. :(

Sorry, no help, but I've heard several stories like this recently. Cars -- and stuff in cars -- are becoming more and more a target. Some people are just bad.

Had the same thing happen to me a few years back. It cost about $350 in total to buy a new unit ($200 i think) and have it installed. It's very frustrating though, to have to take on that expense because other people feel the need to steal. Sorry for your situation.

Thank you for your thoughts for me and my family.

$350 isn't too bad I guess. $350 dollars more than what I wanted to spend, but at least the whole car didn't get stolen. ;)

It depends on the stereo you want to put in. We bought one off of Amazon for around $50 at Christmas-time for my son. Hubby bought a similar one for $100 at Best Buy. Both have removeable face-plates. As long as you know how to put it in, it shouldn't cost a lot.

This is best buy's list, from low to high in price:

Try pulling out the old unit and seeing what kind of connector is used. I think (in theory at least) if you stick with the same brand, the connector should be the same and it should be as simple as just pulling out the old, connecting the new and sliding back in . If this was a stock radio, it would be more involved.

ETA: If you look at the best buy site, it shows $50 for installing radios. I'm not a huge fan of Geek Squad, but it should be a simple process. You could also find a local car audio place that specializes in that and I'm sure they would do a great job for about the same price.

If you have a ABC warehouse they have a deal where you buy a deck and they install it free of charge, for only this week i think though.

Are you thinking Collision? Collision insurance is usually much more expensive and is usually bought when you have a new(er) car. Comprehensive covers the crack in the windshield when the truck in front of you on the highway throws a stone; when some idiot decides to have fun by using your back windshield for BB gun practice; when some other idiot decides to steal something out of your car...

Give your insurance carrier a call. At least you'd know for sure if the radio would be covered.

I would keep an eye on ebay or craigs list for the same radio. All you need is the face plate so the radio can be non-working. I would wait it out for a while and see if one comes available. You may also give a call to some of your independent radio shops. They may have one they took out and will sell it to you for parts... Lastly, I would replace the radio myself. Walmart has relatively nice ones on sale. See if there is a forum (Like DIS) but devoted to your car. You can ask how to remove the radio there.
