I live in NYC and we have SO much plastic and other garbage just blowing around, whether it be litter, or from an over-full trash can, or somehow escaping a large garbage bag (you'd be amazed how often household trash bags end up broken and their insides strewn about the street) that anything that will help reduce that is a-ok with me. The larger environmental benefits are also fantastic. Many stores here have already switched to reusable bags, some at a cost, some not. They are a pretty good quality and can be used for other reusable shopping. I've also used them to hold gifts, rather than buy wrapping paper or gift bags, since those are both a waste of money and rarely re-used.
I admittedly am not the greatest about some things I could be better at, but I am trying to get into better habits and I think limiting options is the best way for a lot of us to make changes. I'll never forget being in CA and buying about six or seven things at the self-checkout, only to find there were no bags available. I stacked my items and carefully walked to the car. And the next time I needed to buy some things in CA, I remembered they don't have bags in CA!
