Are you familiar with this food?

There are 2 distinct kinds of SOS. You can use corned beef, or, as many moms who are budget conscious do....take leftover roast beef that's too small to serve the entire family and chip up into small pieces. Put in a pan and make a gravy to stir into it. Both are served over bread, toasted or untoasted. I wouldn't expect to find this on a menu (perhaps in diners or on breakfast menus) as it's often times a way of stretching food.

Another one here that remembers it from my dad - he made it all the time - also was from his days in the Navy - luckily, he made it for himself and us kids were never expected to eat it!!!! He also made something similar that I didn't mind so much - same creamed gravy thing, but with fresh spring vegetables.

There's a home delivery near us called Schwans. They sell chipped beef. I've never purchased it, so I can't say if it's good or not :)

Deb
I buy it from Schwans and it is really good, I like it plain without the toast or on a dry baked potato. I also put it over veggies. I can't recall seeing it in a restaurant.

Yummy, fattening, comfort type food

It is a staple around here. My DS loves that stuff so we have it once a month in this house. It is also available for breakfast at all the restaurants around here. We eat it for dinner though. My favorite is sausage gravy over toast. Same prep as the chipped beef but using sausage instead.

OMG we used to have that all the time when I was a kid. I always assumed it was a local thing, we have a lot of weird regional things in Cincinnati, and I never knew anyone from elsewhere who had it.

ONLY homemade, with the Budig dried beef, put it on toast, then my mom made a creamy/butter sauce to pour over it.

VERY fattening, but one of those childhood/memory/comfort foods. I probably havent had it in 30 years!

My mom used to make it all the time. I made it not too long ago with ground beef...I love it....DH didn't care for it..

Funny--we do have Budig beef around here but I had never thought to use it for creamed chipped beef. I use either Carson's Air Dried beef or Eskay (but I prefer Carson's). Also, we don't make the sauce seperately, it is made with the beef in it.

It's always on the breakfast menu around here. Especially in the diners. I actually made some over hash browns the other night for dinner.

Hormel also makes dried beef and it is in a jar. It is a little salty, so it is best to rinse it first. My dad was in the Navy so grew up eating it for dinner.

trying to figure out what state you are in? It is served in restaurants here in PA. My cafeteria at work even has it occassionally. I personally don't eat it. But from what I've seen you put in on Texas Toast thick bread.

I've never seen it at a restaurant. My mom used to make it for us when we were sick - a definate comfort food. I haven't had it in years, but I'm having surgery on Monday and I already bought the Budig lunchmeat so dh can make me some during recovery. (probably wishful thinking!)

I didn't know they made frozen. I might go check that out since dh has a definate aversion to cooking.

I make a wonderful dried beef dip from the Hormel brand. You blend 16 oz cream cheese & 16 oz sour cream together, then add a jar of the dried beef chopped with green onions. OMG it's so good. I'll have to make some now. :teeth:

When I was in elementary school (half a century ago) we had creamed chicken on toast. I loved it.

when I was growing up, my mom use to make dried beef gravy all the time. You will sometimes see it in resturants, but if you can't find dried beef gravy, almost every breakfast resturant in Indiana sells biscuits and gravy.

I love chipped beef! It was my dad's all-time favorite breakfast food. When I wanted the car for the day, I would get up early, make him a big helping of s.o.s, a big pot of coffee and serve him breakfast in bed and the car was mine!!!

Our walmart sells chipped beef (stoffer's) in the frozen food section. Almost as good as when I make it myself. My DH loves it too, but it is sooooo fattening that we don't have it very often.

A restaurant on my street corner serves it. I don't eat it though my dad does when he comes to visit we go there for breakfast. It's a local place not a big chain breakfast place!

Schwanns is good but I prefer stouffers (orange box in freezer section).
I love it over mashed potatoes myself.
I first tried it while working in nursing home.

It's also known as sh** on a shingle!
