We live and work in Manhattan..so since 9/11 and last year's power outage we have prepared by keeping extra cash handy as well as pre-paid telephone cards and pre-paid Metro-Cards ( for city bus and subway) and definately keeping an extra pair of comfortable sneakers and change of clothes at work (bright colors in case its dark outside). We also have a portable transistor radio ready with batteries. We also have an emergency plan to meet at a specific location in Central Park since its open space and probably one of the least likely terrorists targers in NYC. Otherwise, we are pretty cool people here in NYC and bounce back quickly. We are accustomed to the heavy Police/Security presence and hope for the best. I guess , in our hearts we know one day something terrible will happen here again but we can't allow ourselves to worry too much over it. So we just go on with our lives . Today, the Police/Security presence is rather large and obvious. Don't forget the flashlight, extra batteries and and extra bulb ( they always seem to fail when we need them most). Also, very important, have a easy to get at list of every important telephone number to take with you in an emergency. Beyond that, we just walk tall in NYC and no one will make us cower before them.
