Are you charged for not staying in a hotel?

Last year we were very naughty and booked a virgin flydrive but didn't pick up the car as it was cheaper to rent separately. Although some people said you may be charged for not using the car we weren't (phew)

Now I am looking at flights for Dec and it is cheaper to buy a package with Hotelfor 2 wks. I am only wanting to stay in the hotel for 1 week.
Does anyone know if we would be charged for not using it?

I know that people who book cruises during their stay just leave the hotel rooms empty on a package :)

I can't imagine on what grounds they could charge you to be honest. I mean, you'll have paid for the room and the right to stay there, but I don't think it's a contractual obligation that you actually have to stay there... you know? But I'm just guessing.

Thanks for the replies.
I've looked in the small print and it just says you can't 'sub-let' it
