Are you breastfeeding a toddler?

LOL, I just noticed that this thread was revived and had to jump in to do my anti-drama voodoo dance! Excuse me, my now almost 21-month-old son just walked up to me and latched on... :lmao:

I didn't interpret his comment that way..
It's just that it takes a special commitment to breastfeed into toddler hood and to deal with all of the ignorance out there about bf'ing an older child & bf'ing in general.

So true.

I just found this thread and it couldn't have come at a better time!

We are heading down to WDW for free dining in three weeks. I still nurse my DS who is 28 months old. (Nursed DS16 until he weaned himself at 10 months because I was pregnant with DD14, who nursed until she was 2 1/2.)

DS has a dairy allergy so I can't have dairy either. I have been gently trying to wean him so that I can enjoy all the free dining plan has to offer (creme brulee, ice cream, CHEESE). After reading this thread, I have been reminded of why I believe self-weaning is important and have decided to not put my need for a few days of indulgence ahead of DS's needs.

I can also relate to a 2 year old not talking. DS has mild craniosynostosis (skull fused together too soon, luckily his is so mild it did not require surgery). We were very concerned about his delay in speech at 2 years old. Now, just a few months after his second birthday he is talking up a storm! We found that "Talking Hands" and "Baby Signs" were wonderful tools for helping curb the frustration he was experiencing about not being able to communicate. I also believe watching those videos (which he asks for more than any other video) really helped him get where he is now!

Wow, we have a lot in common. My DD is also allergic to milk (and eggs) and to continue to nurse her I had to give it all up too (for about a year, she didn't have a problem with it in my breast milk until after her 1st encounter with real milk in formula.) We live in MI too. Today is my DD's 2nd brithday and she nurses every morning still. I have a bit more freedom lately though, I can have bites here and there, minor amounts and things that have milk in them but aren't milk products now and she doesn't have any problem with it. This little bit of freedom made life so much easier for me.

Oh but I lost 20 pounds last year. :thumbsup2

Look for a pm from me.

I was an extednded nurser my elder child nursed for the last time a few months ago... he is 3 my younger child just isnt a **** machine and has started only nursing before going to sleep... and occationally skipping that he is 13 months

CLOTH! Our son (planned homebirth but ended up with a c-section, long story!) has been cloth diapered from day 1, and that includes 2 trips to WDW (and numerous trips to other places). We stayed at Pop and had no problem washing.
Other crunchy features of our family, lol: SAHM, extended rear-facing in car seat, family chiro care, co-sleeping (still!), delayed solids (9 mos.), no circ, EC (since birth--but obviously we do use diaper backup), slinging, vegan/whole foods (Mama is vegan...boys are dairy-free but do eat meat...no red meat for the baby), definitely going to homeschool, and probably some other things I'm forgetting. I'm sure many of you do the same stuff! Feel free to share! :grouphug: :wizard:

I nursed DD until she was 21 months. She started playing while she was nursing so I weaned her. I would have nursed her till she was 2.

OUr last trip with only 1 kiddo we did cloth... DH and I are considering using tushies for this trip because washing every 3 days for 10 days will cost more than the diapers. My DH also gets antsy about the cloth diaper washing smell that comes from the machine in public... and pepole have rude ideas of public washers in public washing places, even disney and I would hate for my pretty diapers to get dumped on the floor even for a moment because I had to run to the ladies room midwash ya know... so many hard choices!

WOW! I am so happy to read all of these wonderful posts! I stopped getting on Disboards so frequently about a year ago and one of the main reasons was all of the negativity toward bfing. Anyway, I nursed both my little guys until they were 4 (although my dd did wean at 21 months while I was pregnant and then unweaned? 10 months later :p ). We're in the process of adopting and I can't wait to put my new daughter to the breast!

We've been to WDW 3 times since we've had kids and our upcoming trip will be the first time in 7 years that I haven't nursed a little one through the World - OMG I just realized how much I'm going to miss finding a quiet, cool spot to reconnect in the middle of all the craziness!

I'll keep an eye out for all you nursing mamas. I'll be the one gazing at you with the smile on her face and the tear in her eye ;) .

Another MDC mama here. Tandem nursing my 4 1/2 yr old and my 20m old, we are practicing child-led weaning. We're also a crunchy family :) I'm psyched to see all these MDC mamas :cool1:

When we went last year, the babe was almost a yr and I nursed him C-O-N-S-T-A-N-T-L-Y all around the world in the sling. In fact, the child would not cut me any slack so after a while it became hubby's job to hold him. After 6 hrs of nursing straight, the breasts get a tad tired. :lmao:

I'm gonna have to check out MDC.

I am so thrilled to see so many others nursing older kids. I feel like a freak some times still nursing my 4.5 yr old. I've given up telling people that we still nurse, not to mention co sleep, I did the sling thring until he hated it, did very extended rear facing car seat and even now, he is still in a 5 pt harness and will be until he maxes out his Marathon. Didn't do cloth diapers because I had to go back to work and the day care wouldn't use them. I pumped and also came to his day care every day to nurse until he was 2.5 yrs old. Now, we just bf at home.

I did extended BF with all 3 of my kids and while they were all born in a hospital, they were born with very little medical interferance and no drugs.

Very cool to see so many other like-minded moms here. :-)

boy iam glad i bottle feed my children, not only are not allergic to any thing they do not have tantrums because they still cant have the breast when they are 5. come on you guys sound as if your children a superior then bottle feed children. i think at 2yrs they should be able to drink out of the cup and eat food.and as for tantrums.it has nothing to do with breastfeeding, every child has them. lets here it for bottle fed babies :cheer2:

And a bit insecure about not BF it also how it seems.

In an effort not to feed anything, I just wanted to point out this nifty feature on the disboards.

If you look at the bottom of each post there is a lil' triangle with an exclamation point in it. It is located on the bottom left of each individual post. Should someone come across, I don't know, an offensive post perse, all you need to do is click on that triange and the said post gets reported.

Just in case, yk?

My dh just handed me the computer so that I could respond! I am still nursing my 20 month old son, and am planning on doing so until he decides he is done! I am currently 34 weeks pregnant. I live in Orlando, and have nursed my son in the parks since his birth. I have never had any problems with people commenting or anything (not that it would stop me!) :woohoo: Congrats on your successful bf'ing relationship with your child, it is just such an incredible experience for both mother and child. I wouldn't want to miss it for anything!

Thanks for ruining a very civilized thread about an issue that many of us care about. What is the point of your post but to antagonize those of us who have been part of this discussion?

let's please keep this beautiful thread drama free :)

Oceana - we did cloth on all our vacations when the kids were still in dipes.

Don't feed the troll. Especially breastmilk, apparently. :lmao:

Just another extended breastfeeding, cloth diapering, co-sleeping, APing, slinging mama here....
