Guess I need to take the kids to Washington DC one of these days. When they tell people at Disney they are from Washington, we start getting all kinds of questions about DC things.
Last trip someone asked DS(7) if he had ever been to the White House, he replied "no our house is kind of brown"!
I know this is off topic, but since there are so many people here from the Portland area, and you have mentioned the Rose Festival, I have a funny story.
Flashback to early 1980's, I'm a 19 year old working at my first big office job near Lloyd Center. I had a big report due, so I had to go in on Saturday to work. Being from a rural area 30 miles north, I had been to the Rose Festival carnival, but never the Grand Floral Parade.
I had to go down MLK Blvd (then Union Ave) to get to the office. I decided to go in around 5am, so I could finish up early. I seen all sorts of people sleeping on the sidewalks in sleeping bags, lawn chairs, tents, etc... All I can remember was thinking, oh my goodness I had no idea there were so many homeless people. Some people were awake and waved hello to me. It was sort of a Twilight Zone experience. I had tears in my eyes by the time I made it to the office and was wondering what I could do to help. So many people, lots of small children, etc...
As soon as my boss arrived at the officer I mentioned the numerous homeless people out on the streets and was quite disturbed by the sheer numbers of them. Of course she about died laughing as she explained they were folks that camped the night before so they would have a good spot for the Grand Floral Parade!
I usually watch the Parade on tv and we laugh hysterically at all of the "homeless" people lining the parade route! My DH always tells me maybe I can "help" them by giving them free carnival ride tickets!
