Are we using masks or not now?

Are you wearing a mask to go for groceries?

We will begin using our own masks the next time we get groceries , but other than walking the dogs we don’t go out more than once a week. Its being said that 20 to 50% of us could be asymptomatic and that using a face mask could protect other people from catching this from you ( source for this was the chief medical officer for Bellvue hospital in New York City during a NBC interview on Friday morning ). That alone is reason enough for me to wear it while still practicing social distancing guidelines. Other than being tested there’s no way to know if I’m a carrier so why not add an extra layer of protection when I must be out.

ETA) our masks are home made cloth masks and have a filter , medical supply masks need to be saved for medical staff.

I've seen online where you can buy medical mask pads to put in either a disposable mask or a reusable one. I would think it would work in a home made one, too.

This is such a good question. I would like to wear a mask, but do not have any.

I could try to make my own but I would want to throw them out after each wear, so I doubt I could make enough with the limited materials I have at home.

so long as you remove it properly - clean your hands first by either washing or hand sanitizer, grasp the ties with your pinkies and pull it out and down without touching the face section and drop the whole thing into a bag or directly into hot water, clean your hands again and then wash it with soap and hot water - the cloth ones are reusable. I've even seen reports of people using their instant pot to steam sterilize after it's been washed but I think that's a tad excessive.

Does this concern anyone else, can’t believe it has come to this.

I did read that you can also make them from paper towels. I wish I'd kept that link.

EDIT: I found this link for the paper ones:

And this link for the no sew bandana ones:

So just to jump in and hopefully not jumped on. What was said and how it was said. The non medical masks will protect others from you. But will NOT protect you from you.
I deal with this at work and with coworkers.
The problem with wearing masks is 2 things. 1 you end up touching your face more than with out. You dont even realize it.
2 it gives people a false sense of security. It is shown that people dont keep a safe distance when they have these on.
The best thing is self distancing..
Please stay safe.

A friend made a couple of cloth masks for me and dropped them off, but I find when wearing them it makes my glasses fog up with my breath. So if I wore it out, I know I'd be contantly touching it to pull it down a bit or touching my glasses and moving them around. Is it that the material isn't the proper kind maybe?

Not that its the wrong material. It is letting your air exscape upward into you glasses. So this is part of what I was saying earlier. Even with the proper masks people outside the medical field do not wear them the proper way. When I do my shopping i see these people with N95 masks and they are not formfitted have gaps and defeat the whole purpose.
We need to better educate our selves on what is needed and how to wear them.
I know its scary out there and so much info each way. Its hard to know what way is up. Wash your hands. Social distance. And only go to the store if needed. I am now shopping about every 10 days. Eating and clearing out pantry and freezer.
Stay safe all.

YES especially to the words i highlighted! I was listening to someone today tell the cashier she was wearing her mask to keep her from getting sick -- of course she pulled the danged thing down to talk and then tugged it right back up and fiddled around with the straps -- I wanted to scream NO it will keep you from getting other people sick!

There is so much information floating around and it's hard for people to sort thru the chatter and get to clear facts. If someone wants to follow the suggestions given by Dr. Tam (and that is to simply use a cloth mask) without any clear direction regarding what type of material to use & a pattern to follow coupled with clear instructions of how to wear & the remove the mask it will lead to confusion. I consider myself fairly well educated, I know how to research and which sources I can trust but after an hour of first googling, then tearing my house apart to find possible materials I just gave up in utter frustration.

I'll continue to do what I've been doing - staying inside our house, only going out to get food or meds when absolutely necessary & washing my hands so much they're an ugly shade of red!

Stay safe and in the immortal words of Samuel L. Jackson "Stay the F**k at home!"

@mort1331 And that is why I haven't worn them. She (and so many others I see on FB) are making masks for people, and donating to health care workers they say, and I think the same things as you.

@Donald - my hero My hands are so red and rough from washing and using hand sanitizer too so much. I try and remember to lather them with cream when I go to bed at night but I could probably still sand down some old furntiture with them!! Ha.

Hi Hon
I am in the same boat
I have Dysphoric eczema,, Atopic eczema and Psoriasis ,,a couple of years ago I lost all the upper layers of skin on my hands.
I have to moisturize every time I disinfect,,,for me it's safer to be home.
I apply a special steroid cream and moisturizer cream at night and then use cotton white gloves to sleep.
99% of all my clothing is cotton.
I know this will sound weird but I have a neck warmer and I put some coffee filters (2-3) inside the front of it. It probably doesn't help but it makes me feel better. With my sunglasses I kind of look like a bank robber..lol...lol.,I kind of scare people into social distancing!!
I should also mention I don't wear rings anymore and have trimmed my nails way down,,less places for germs to hang out.
We will get through this hon.
Hugs
Mel

I will be sewing up some masks for us to wear when we go out to restock. We have been practicing self isolation for years now :rotfl: and will continue to do so. We will probably start to wear the masks when we go there...but not at our work. I suffer from seasonal allergies ( snow mold is the worst :guilty: ) and get many stares and evil glaces when we are out and about. I understand it won't protect me from the virus, but my greatest fear is not getting the virus, but passing it onto someone who is more vulnerable than I am, and having them get very sick or worse. So we will continue to do what we do best...stay at home!!! Although I do miss going out to a restaurant for a meal!!! I am really missing that...and seeing the grand baby!!!!! Video chatting is just not the same :(

I did run to the dollar store to get some hair elastic ties to be able to whip up some masks for us and other family members who might want a mask.

I'm pretty isolated at work. There are only 3 of us in our front office and everyone with their own office. Our company has now set up our time clocks so that we can either go online or use an app to clock in and out daily. So no sharing scanners etc etc etc. I feel pretty safe in my office as it's closed to the public. If you don't have a credit card or an account, you can't get material. No public in our front offices at all. Some people have not been very happy, but for everyone's safety, we need to do that.
