Megrahi was not going to suddenly confess lots of info just prior to his death, and to be honest keeping him here would have resulted in him actually going into hospital to have palliative/terminal care and I don't feel like paying taxpayer's money towards his care thanks very much. There are still lots of theories which I've heard about our governments getting so-called important people off the flight list prior to that fateful flight. We shall never know, but I reckon there is a lot more to the bombing than meets the eye.

Perhaps keeping an eye on him will give some clue as to who the rest of the bombers are.

I have a differing opinion from the OP on what the Scottish Government did today. I am of the group who heartily applauds the Scottish Government's behavior. I explained my reasons for why I feel the way I do. I even apologized to someone who implied that she had relatives "slaughtered" by the man who was allowed to go home to die.

If you have a problem with my stance on this situation, then all I can say is that the problem is yours; not mine.

Well he isn't flying home commercial. he's being picked up by Kadahfi's (sp?) private plane. Word on the street is that Britain is trying to make inroads with Libya for oil and this is a political pandering move.

Wouldn't it be a tragedy if that plane had mechanical difficulty? I say let him rot (literally) in prison. He is not worthy of an ounce of compassion. It's a little hard to forgive someone who isn't sorry for his actions. He'd probably do it again, if he were able.

In Carly's defense, I couldn't tell what you were trying to convey in that post and had assumed that it was that you were a family member.

My point was,it is up to them, not the justice secratery.

Actually, it's better to leave that decision to the Justice Minister. Allowign the family of those killed to make decisions regarding punnishment is no way to run a justice system.

While it might certainly be true that once he arrives in Libya that some will give him the so-called 'hero's welcome', it does not follow that this will happen merely because he flew home on a government plane. After all, John Yettaw left Myanmar on a government plane, but he's still a putz.

I think it is horrible they let him out. What is the point?

• Keeping people locked up when they are basically on their death bed is pointless.
• Paying for the end of life healthcare of prisoners is spendy and is better avoided.
• Releasing him may help improve relations with Libya.
• Keeping an eye on him after release may yield clues to other people connected to the bombing.

Compassion? He was in PRISON. For a heinous crime. Sentenenced to LIFE IN PRISON. So wasn't the point being that he was supposed to die in prison? He served 7 years? And that is justice? I've had vacations like that (but never in Scotland).
