... But I do think it stinks royally that the private plane of Moammar Gadhafi was the one to pick him up at the jail. :headache: That made my blood boil.
It's not like he could take a commercial flight.
... Megrahi was not going to suddenly confess lots of info just prior to his death, and to be honest keeping him here would have resulted in him actually going into hospital to have palliative/terminal care and I don't feel like paying taxpayer's money towards his care thanks very much. There are still lots of theories which I've heard about our governments getting so-called important people off the flight list prior to that fateful flight. We shall never know, but I reckon there is a lot more to the bombing than meets the eye.
Perhaps keeping an eye on him will give some clue as to who the rest of the bombers are.
He came home to a hero's welcome, and is now influencing directly thousands of impressionable young men who will now emulate his actions.
I can't find any reference to this 'hero's welcome'. Can you provide a link?

And you are making your own assumptions by accusing me of trying to stir things up. This should go without saying but I'm going to say it anyway: I'm not in any way, shape or form trying to "stir things up".

I have a differing opinion from the OP on what the Scottish Government did today. I am of the group who heartily applauds the Scottish Government's behavior. I explained my reasons for why I feel the way I do. I even apologized to someone who implied that she had relatives "slaughtered" by the man who was allowed to go home to die.

If you have a problem with my stance on this situation, then all I can say is that the problem is yours; not mine.

I did not try to imply that I had relatives slaughtered, you never read the post correctly. My point was,it is up to them, not the justice secratery.
I also believe you were trying to stir things up, I posted how I felt, no more, no less. You refer to me as "she" then our friend from scotland, mmm.
MMF fan, this clause was in the news only last week when ronnie briggs was freed on comp leave. I do agree with you though re conviction but that is not the issue here.(sorry, I am sure you know that though)
And by the way, I think you will find that everybody in scotland remembers his face and what he done constantly.

Well he isn't flying home commercial. he's being picked up by Kadahfi's (sp?) private plane. Word on the street is that Britain is trying to make inroads with Libya for oil and this is a political pandering move.

Wouldn't it be a tragedy if that plane had mechanical difficulty? :rolleyes1 I say let him rot (literally) in prison. He is not worthy of an ounce of compassion. It's a little hard to forgive someone who isn't sorry for his actions. He'd probably do it again, if he were able.

In Carly's defense, I couldn't tell what you were trying to convey in that post and had assumed that it was that you were a family member.

Actually, it's better to leave that decision to the Justice Minister. Allowign the family of those killed to make decisions regarding punnishment is no way to run a justice system.

Ummm, are either of those terms in any way inflamatory?

Here ya go

TRIPOLI, Libya - The only man convicted in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing has returned home to Libya to die after Scotland released him from prison Thursday, a decision that outraged some relatives of the 270 people killed when the jetliner blew up over a Scottish town.

Thousands were on hand to greet terminally ill Abdel Baset al-Megrahi when his plane from Scotland touched down at a military airport in Tripoli. There was a festive atmosphere with some wearing t-shirts with al-Megrahi's picture. Others waved Libyan and Scottish flags while Libyan songs blared.

Many here see al-Megrahi as an innocent scapegoat of the West.

Khadaffi sent his personal plane to pick him up; most rational people can extrapolate from there.
So you wrap speculation up as fact and then insult me when I ask for a link? Interesting.

While it might certainly be true that once he arrives in Libya that some will give him the so-called 'hero's welcome', it does not follow that this will happen merely because he flew home on a government plane. After all, John Yettaw left Myanmar on a government plane, but he's still a putz.

You go ahead and be embarassed. I'm of Scottish descent and applaud the compassion they showed even in the face of someone who showed no compassion.

Isn't this what Jesus taught, after all?

:sad2::sad2:

I think it is horrible they let him out. What is the point?

Thanks for the link.

  • Keeping people locked up when they are basically on their death bed is pointless.
  • Paying for the end of life healthcare of prisoners is spendy and is better avoided.
  • Releasing him may help improve relations with Libya.
  • Keeping an eye on him after release may yield clues to other people connected to the bombing.

well heck, let's let all the dying prisoners go FREE!!

There's an argument for and against that, but it's fodder for a different thread. Besides, our laws are different than theirs.

:confused3 Doesn't take a rocket scientist, or a link to realize that Libya and Khadaffi will use this as a tool to continue to make al-Megrahi a marter.

I'm thinking that it's harder for them to paint him as a marter since he has been returned alive.

When you die of prostate cancer, they don't have virgins awaiting you in Heaven.

Compassion? He was in PRISON. For a heinous crime. Sentenenced to LIFE IN PRISON. So wasn't the point being that he was supposed to die in prison? He served 7 years? And that is justice? Where is the compassion for the victims? Today, with the release, they managed to open the wounds of all the families of the victims once again.

It's only an insult if you're not rational. And if you're not rational, then you have bigger issues anyway.

And it wasn't speculation, it was a rational assumption, which as I can see, another poster quite helpfully proved as true with a link to a factual news item.

I agree, eeeennnnteeerrreessting!

Your posts are all insults and no meat. I will endeavor to no longer read them, but I'm really bad at ignoring such things.
