My friend has been working at the same place for over 3 years and has never recieved a pay increase. (she is paid hourly) She called me today and asked my advice, but I have no idea if there are laws about wages, besides minimum wage of course. She said she spoke with her supervisor and was told that nobody had been given a raise, including management. She said they do have "reviews" every year, but no increase. Are there any laws or regulations on wage increases?? Any websites I can send her??

Thanks! :wave2:

to my knowledge, there are no laws that say that you have to give an incease in pay. only that you have to pay the federal/state minimum (whichever is higher) and that for any hourly employees you have to pay time and a half past 40 hours in one work week.

NOpe. No laws about wage increases, just how much to start with minimum. Now your friend knows always to ask about raise policy when applying for a job if its not spelled out up front. Although i have a hard time believing that even management doesn't get a raise at her company. They either have a real high turnover, or a shady bonus policy. Most ppl need to keep up with inflation.

Wow she needs to find a new job! I can't imagine working someplace for 4 years and never getting an increase! I have gotten increases every single year for the past 20 years at my job!

she must work for my company. None of us have had raises, in the last 5 years and have seen increases in our health insurance costs, but we have also seen our team shrink from 29 to 8, so at this point most are just glad to be working. But some extra money would be nice...

I don't know how you do it with the cost of living going up and not having a raise in 5 years. I hope you get a raise soon! Not paying for health insurance was a big factor in the union settling our contract this year, it was only a 3 percent raise and a $1,000 lump sum payment but thre was no paying a penny into the health insurance.

I am lucky in that I am the "Second Income" my dh changed jobs last July and he is paid on commission instead of salary, so that has taken some getting use to also. I dropped my health insurance and my dh just carries all of us now because it went from $140 a month to $480. I just have to pay the co-pays and have a larger deductable now.

Our great:rolleyes: governor showed us last year that it's not illegal to not give wage increases.

Wow! I feel very fortunate to work for a company where we get annual raises (as long as you don't get a poor review).

I am another who hasn't had a real raise in a while. I had one over 2 years ago and it was a hair over 1%. So while they are hopeful that next year will be the year they can do it, I am jus happy to keep my job :)

I've received a $.055 increase in pay in the 4yrs I've worked here and I had a promotion.

As this point, I feel very fortunate I have a job. I work in telecom and few non-union employees in this industry ( at least nearby) have received raises since the industry bottomed out.

Thanks you guys... I will pass the info on to her. I really wish she'd get a different job, but she doesn't want to quit because of her health insurance. She lives in a small town and there really aren't a lot of places to work..... plus she's in her late 50's, with no college education. At least she's not flipping burgers... but then again, most chain restaurants probably give frequent raises.

You should consider yourself very lucky. I work for a large financial institution and I just got my 1st raise in 4 years. That's also after having record breaking profits for the last few years. Many companies have gone w/o giving raises because of cost containment issues. Luckily I'm not the primary wage earner in our family or it would be tough.
