Are there any natural sleep aids for babies???

Okay - I hate to hijack this thread, but I am very interested in this. My daughter seems to be sleeping less through the night since she started on whole milk almost a month ago. It gives her gas like she has never had and I think it wakes her up at night.

I am going to call her pedi today - but have any of you done soy or rice milk instead of cow's milk? I just know the cow's milk is what is waking her up in the night!

Let me first tell you that a Mother is usually always right. Sorry but we know our children better than anyone. I have done a ton of research on the dairy thing since one of my children was having problems. I am sorry to hijack and after this post you can PM me if you want any more info.

Here's what our issues were. When my child was born I nursed him. Everytime I had dairy products he would vomit. So I stopped eating any dairy products and the vommiting stopped. Once we stopped nursing (well over a year old) we started on cow milk. We just assumed all would be well. Over time our son became a puker. Meaning he would vomit a lot. The vomitting was not from sickness. We came to realize that certain foods were a trigger for him. Sometimes it was the texture but more and more we noticed that most of the foods had dairy in them. For example- he cannot drink yogurt drinks and he cannot have milkshakes. (those are just a few). He was not sleeping at night. He was literally flip flopping all over the bed that we were making the appoinments to take him for a sleep study. He had dark circles around his eyes that we thought were from poor sleep but were really allergic shiners. He had already had an upper GI (thankfully all was fine) and a sinus catscan. The catscan showed that he was full of mucous and we assumed that was causing apnea. Thankfully we have an amazing ENT. I mentioned to him that I was considering going dairy free in our home. He told me that was the best thing I could ever do for my children. So we did it. Within 2 weeks there was no restless sleeping and my child was actually rested! He was not vomitting at all (this had become almost daily before that). He did not have pain in his legs (classsic sign of dairy sensitivity) and he did not have black circles or a wet/runny nose. This changed his life 110%. He feels better, he looks better, and more importantly he IS better. Most peds will say that it is a lactose allergy or that you are imagining it etc. Or they will test and it will come back negative because there is not a technical "allergy" but rather a high sensitivity. The sensitivity will not show up because most tests are not sensitive enough to pick up the low amount of histamines. I have followed up with a pediatric allergist/endocrinologist who has been practicing for 45 years and the first thing he said was that our child had all the classic symptoms of dairy allergies and to continue to go dairy free. It will be the best thing for him. Going dairy free has helped not only our son but it has cleared up our dd's eczema. As soon as she "cheats" she has an outbreak. When we are super strict she is fine. Eczema is a symptom of an allergy. Children do not need cow milk. Keep in mind that dairy is in many many products. You have to really read labels until you learn what has dairy and what does not. We try to eat as unprocessed as possible. We do have snacks and stuff but we use rice products instead. Soy breaks down almost the same way as milk which is why some kids don't do well on it. We use some soy products but the kids actually prefer the rice products (like Rice Cream instead of Soy Ice Cream). Good luck and if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

OP here--no problem at all. I have long wondered about a milk allergy and that is why we kept trying different formulas. I think that the hypo is still milkbased, but just broken down much more already. I have been concerned about switching to milk at one year and was going to talk to the ped again at 1 yr checkup. I asked him about an allergy test for milk a good while back and it seems like he told me there was no definate test for that:confused3 - I guess kind of what you posted about. Im wonderning if I should push my ped to schedule an appt with an allegerist and have her tested. What is involved in the tests? It seems overwhelming to take all dairy out of her diet as it seems to be in so much food. I just wouldnt know where to start. I am just going crazy here. She was up again starting at 3am for quite some time. DH took her as I have a very bad sore throat and wasnt feeling well- icing on the cake!! Thanks for the helpful info about your child.

There are different ways to test for milk allergies, usually with a blood type test. I personally would not test my child. No need to. Just remove it from her diet and see what happens. Yes dairy is in so many foods but after the first few weeks you will be able to identify just about everything that has dairy in it and find a suitable replacement. If you just try to eat as little processed foods as possible you will have a great variety of foods. She is only 1 so it will be easier. If you need any food suggestions let me know.

A lot of babies that are put to sleep (rocking, nursing, bottle, binkie, etc.) can't stay asleep. Human beings wake several times a night, during the sleep cycle, and go right back to sleep, unless the conditions they fall asleep in have changed. The first step is to always let her put herself to sleep.

I feel your pain. My 14 month old was waking up 2 or 3 times a night. We got in the habit of bringing her into our bed (so she wouldn't wake up my older daughter) where she would sleep great but would toss and keep us up. We did the music & the white noise too.

About two months ago It seemed to be getting worse not better.. I said We've got to solve this now. Took her to the Ped to rule out ears, teeth whatever. I also was concered about milk intolerance because we had switch her over to whole milk at 1 year..and I swear (in my sleep deprived state) it was when things got worse.

We switched her back to the Go & Grow toddler formula..and then tried a night of cry it out. Let me say, I was so not a proponate of this.. We kept her in bed and just went in to calm her and lay her back down. It took 15-20 mins of going back in every 2-3 mins...but 1 night and.....drum roll... She sleeps thru the night now. 7:30PM to 6AM

I totally agree! DD went through a similar situation around 8 months. She would fall asleep and wake up every hour so we would go in rock her until she went back to sleep. We (I) couln't do it anymore, I needed sleep!! I finally had to let her cry it out (hardest thing ever!!) She probably cried 15 minutes the first night, slept a few hours woke up, cried for 5-10 minutes then slept until 8. From then on it was asleep by 7pm-8am sleeping all night! I also had to let her learn how to fall asleep instead of rocking her to sleep.

I loved the book Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy child. I swear by it!! It talks about natural sleep schedules and following them. Once DD was around 1 she would go to sleep between 6:30-7PM and sleep until 7:30-8AM. My DS is the same way now!! The friend that recommended the book STILL has her 7 and 4yo. going to bed by 7 on some school nights!!

This thread had a lot of great advice. My DS is 21 months old & still wakes up at least once, sometimes 2 times per night. It is definitely frustrating at times & I feel like I am on zombie mode with constant bags under my eyes. So I definitely know how you are feeling, but I'm thinking that talking to the Ped. is the best option. I also really like the suggestion about baby massage...maybe that will relax him a bit...my luck it will just recharge him though :)
