Hi,
Just doing some reading on different types of motion sickness meds. in which to take, but it seems that most if not all cause drowsiness.
I get a tad tired when I take Claritin D, so my tolerance is pretty low when it comes to meds. unfortunately.

I've been reading about Meclizine and how great it is, but it appears that it can cause drowsiness(I'd like to know how much), and also isn't recommended for children under 12.

So, is there anything out there that doesn't cause drowsiness, and that a 9 year old can take as well?

Thanks!

I've had motion sickness trouble for years, and the only thing I found that did not make me sleepy was using Sea Bands. I may fall asleep while I'm traveling with them, but I don't get groggy, I sleep more out of boredom! All other things I tried made me loopy - even the non drowsy dramamine made me a little out of it, although it was better than any other medicine I have tried.

Mark, thanks for posting this! I also have an almost-9-yo who can't last a half an hour in the car and we're driving to Orlando in June! Last year we gave him Dramamine but it did make him drowsy and just a TAD irritable (grrrrrr-- like a bear) and if we didn't give it to him before eating, it didn't work. The sea bands don't work for him. I would love to know what to do!!!
Good luck!

Years ago a common treatment for nausea was coke syrup.
There are no side effects because all it is is the syrup that you make Coka Cola fountain drinks out of.

You MIGHT be able to get some at the local pharmacy or at a soda fountain.
Yes, people still use it to fight nausea and have found that it works quite well.
Good luck. :)

Another vote for Sea Bands...they aren't only good for motion sickness but for morning sickness as well ;)

Bonine (brand name for meclizine) does NOT cause drowsiness in the vast majority of people and is quite effective. Dramamine is the one that does.

I have used Bonine and was not drowsy. I used the sea bands last cruise and I think they worked great. I would try them :)

I have no problems with Less Drowsy Dramamine. I only take a third of a tablet and it works fine, and I used to get really sick!

I have had major stomach surgery and am unable to vomit, therefore when I get nauseated, it is a major problem. I have used bonine successfully without drowsiness in the past but the surgeon who performed my NF said that sea bands would work as well.

I tried them last cruise and airplane flight and they worked. I still keep bonine with me (just in case!)

Our whole family used Bonine on our cruise Mar 15th. It worked great for everyone. We even gave it to our 7 year old, but we just gave her a half of a tablet every morning. It comes in a chewable tablet and it was easy to take. Some people have also talked about using ginger tablets. I took some along on this cruise and took one the first night because it was a little rocky out there, but every day after that I just took the Bonine and did not have any problems at all. BTW, our 7yo got seasick on the last cruise and she did not have any problems on this one.

I take Meclizine for an inner ear condition that causes nausea, but I cut the 25mg tablets in fourths because any more then that does make me tired, but even at that dose, it works really well!

Bonine. Used it on our last cruise. didn't have a bit of sleepiness, unlike dramamine which knocked me on my butt!
