Are the filets really disappearing?

Calling this morning to cancel, just don't know where to book for that night, is LeCellier the only other 1TS that still has filets? Not that I have any hope of getting in there, as I tried at 7 am, 180 days out, and there was nothing for my dates??

I can tell you that Prime Rib is being removed from all buffets and being replaced with a New York strip.

This is actually good news to me... I love NY strip....
However my DM has been drooling at the thought of eating the prime rib!

If they pulled the filet then the only other item I was truly interested in is the NY strip. Both cost the same. If this is a move to save money then it would stand to reason the strip would be pulled as well.
With the strip they can change the size though and it will still look like a decent sized steak to save money. There is only so small they can get the fillets without people getting upset at how small they are. In terms of quality I have to say I often do get NY strip or fish when dining at WDW and I felt like on our trip this year the steaks were about the same size as other years but noticeably lower quality in terms of how much fat and gristle they contained. The size of the fish portions seemed smaller but the quality was still good. The menus always change seasonally at this time of year and again in the winter. It will be interesting to see if this change is seasonal or continues.

Disney portions were always so huge in the past, that I'd hope that they would cut down on quanity instead of quality.

We booked our trip kind of late by Disney standards and only managed to get Le Cellier for Lunch. I'm worried about it now because we are really looking forward to the Mushroom Filet. Since this is lunch, does anyone think they will remove it from the menu, to only serve it at dinner time if at all?

I've also been thinking about changing a few things around and trying to book a Kona dinner, with the Beef Teriyaki in mind. Which should be safe right since it's a strip steak?

We only eat Filet in my family when we eat steak. Even my kids. If this is true, we will be cancelling all our ressies at Kona, Narcoosees, etc. I am paying out of pocket for my food. I always look at the menu to make certain filet if there before we make a ressie. If they are stupid enough to drive me to counter service, it will save me a ton of $ this trip, but it might make me stay offsite next year. I can't handle a week without a good steak that is not too far away. I would rather have a good cheeseburger than a sirloin steak. Chicken is no where on my radar. Fish tends to be too over or under cooked. Pork tender might be my only hope! I am shocked that they did this.

Why don't they just charge more for the filet? Or change the dining plan so that it does not include some higher-cost options on the menu and charge more for these? I do not have a problem with paying more for quality products and I'm sure I'm not alone here. If I'm eating out I want it to be a quality meal and I will pay for a quality meal. This news of no more filets is really disheartening. I'm sure there are other items on the menus that will be just as nice, but they aren't filets. :confused3

See, that's what I don't get. If they're going to offer a filet at all, and they don't put the disgusting :crazy2: mushrooms on until after its cooked anyway, then why can't they also offer the maple filet that sooooo many people love?? It doesn't make any sense to me...
New chef.

I just called Disney Dining and asked about this. She had no idea and checked the menus they have and said it still showed on the menu. But, of course, they are subject to change. So I guess I will call the restaurants before we go to make certain they have what we want or will we just do c/s instead.

Filet is one of my favorite things to order while on vacation. It's truly a splurge, because we never eat that at home, and I love it! What a disappointment.

I for one love filets and gladly pay out of pocket for them (not on the dining plan). I'd rather eat filet than all the fatty prime rib they are leaving on the menus.

Same here! I'm a meat & potatoes kind of girl, and I don't like prime rib--I want my filet, and I'll happily pay for it.

I've been looking at a few menus and the lunches don't vary as much from dinner as they used to in the past. Sci Fi has the exact same one, pricing and all. :confused3 Maybe so the DDPers will still get a good "deal" if they have to take a lunch ADR because all the dinner ones are gone?

We are doing OOP because I prefer to just have appetizers instead of entrees and we rarely do dessert. So it didn't make sense to waste the TS credits and still have to pay for my appetizers.

Oh man... I am so dissapointed. I was planning on eating filets while at Disney in a few weeks. Some of the restaurants like Konas, the filet is the only thing I like on the menu. :sad1: I can only eat so many cheeseburgers or ribs or fish.....and I hate pasta.... I guess I can eat alot of chicken and when I get home and people ask me how was the food I can say "Tasted like Chicken!"
I hope they don't replace the filets with bad quality steaks with lots of fat, or really thin steaks that dry out when cooked ( the kind that you have to use a hedge trimmer to saw it in bites size pieces).

I hope with all the canceling of reservations WDW will see what a STUPID mistake they made. I realize beef is probably more expensive than it has been in the past. The US dollar is still weak but it getting stronger and the economy is slowly coming out of the toilet.

I agree with everyone who said that WDW stands alone when it comes to fine dining but if they continue on this path that won't be the case. They won't be any better than Red Lobster or Outback Steakhouse. We have the DDP planned for our trip next year but if steaks are gone across the board, then so will the DDP be for us. It won't be worth it anymore. At least not for us. It'll be cheaper for us to pay for meals OOP.

The unfortunate thing is that the majority of the diners will not even know it is gone until they sit down to order it. So few ressies will be cancelled.

There's a thread over on the The DIS Unplugged Podcast board reporting that filets are off of the menu at WDW restaurants. The speculation is that it is to lower costs during *free* dining. I was wondering if anybody in the parks now or just returning can confirm this or has noticed anything else missing from the menus?

Wonder if this decision is only temporary becasue free dining is about to begin? Once October rolls around, it will be interesting to see if the filets are returned to the menus.

If that were the case, it seems like Disney could just make a menu specific for those dining free and allow those that are paying the option to purchase it.

I like the attitude you are taking but I strongly believe this is not just for free dining. :(

Wow, this means I need to change up some of my dining options. There were a few places we picked that i only wanted the filet. Guess I need to look again at all of our restaurants.

Removing the filets and crab legs - along with any expensive item has been standard practice during free dining. The items will come back once free dining is finished and everyone's paying for their meals again.
