The coasters at IOA are not the longest or the highest coasters, but they are some of the best. There are 4 coasters altogether at IOA--The Hulk coaster (voted the best by several surveys), the two Dueling Dragons coasters (they are not the same) and the relatively tame Unicorn coaster (a family coaster). Also for small kids and their parents, there is the Pteranadon Flyers, which is like a coaster, but has more of a gliding motion than thrills.

The Hulk coaster is great to start with as riders are propeled out of a launch tube and you don't have time to think about being scared. The Hulk has loops and quick rolls.

The Dueling Dragon coasters go close to each other so that may scare you. They also have the climb to the top of the first hill which give you time to get nervous. The Dueling dragon coasters have loops.

My advice is to start slow and build your confidence up.

The Hulk and Dueling Dragons were made by Bollinger and Mallibaud (B&M for short). B&M coasters are generally considered the Rolls Royce of roller coasters.

Are the coasters scary at IOA?

YES !! That is why we LOVE them so!!! :bounce:

I just returned from my first visit to Islands of Adventure and I just wasn't that impressed with the coasters.

Maybe it's because so many improvements have been made to make the tracks smooth. And the harness devices are designed to keep you secure in your seat. For example, on Fire and Ice it is the type where the overhead harness holds you in and your feet dangle. I love the sensation of the wind whipping my legs around. But even with my hands high in the air, I still don't really feel like its possible to fall out. To be fair, I only rode each one once and they were incredibly fast, but I don't recall any great big drops on them.

Hulk had an excellent take-off, I loved that! But the rest of it was a bit of a let-down. Mostly cork-screw type motions and the upside down loops were so fast I barely noticed I was upside down.

I am used to Great America where the Eagle is this old wooden roller coaster that buckles and creeks each time you ride it. The first drop is so intense that you will rise out of your seat no matter how far you pull that lap bar down and that is the only thing holding you in. As you take the corners your body is whipped around. Is this technologically advanced? No, but it gives me the honest to goodness feeling that something could happen while I'm on it, and its that adrenaline that makes it fun.

I guess I had just hoped for more.

I prefer smooth over rickety ANYDAY! I grew up on wooden roller coasters and thought that was the only way to fly but as I get older I have less and less tolerance with being jerked around. The Hulk is the smoothest fastest most tolerable coaster I've ever rode. Everything's relative.

Actually, the smoothest B&M's I've been on are:

Nitro (Six Flags Great Adventure)
The Great Bear (Hersheypark)

Kraken is pretty smooth, but not silky smooth as Nitro or Great Bear!

Barry, it's Claude Mabillard (who's this Mallibaud character??) :). And I agree, B&M really has no equal these days.

If you liked Nitro, have you been on Apollo's Chariot at BG Williamsburg? The setting is great, it's just a bit too short.

Wild Thing at Valleyfair is a better coaster than Hulk and DD, IMHO. Great air time!

We have a coaster call the hurler and its great and only about 5 yrs. old its smooth too.:D we also have a 2 yr old steel coaster call topgun and it is smoooooth. i love it.:D

Can anyone tell me how these coasters at Universal compare to R&R coaster at MGM? I'm a bit of a coaster chicken, but rode R&R twice and loved it!

The Hulk and RnR Coaster are compared often because of the launch. The Hulk has a slower launch than RnRC, but the Hulk has 7 inversions while RnRC has 3. RnRC is a bit better themed than the Hulk, but IMHO, the Hulk is the better ride.

The Hulk looks scary, but I think the scarier coaster is Dueling Dragons. Both are fun rides.

Also, with RnR being inside, you don't see what's happeing to you. The Hulk just appears more frightening because you can see it all.
Go for it!! It's GREAT!!
