Are people buying steaks out of the back of trucks these days?

I understand times are tough and people are hustling to make a buck but I just had a bizarro experience....

Sitting on my couch with the front door to our screened-in porch wide open, I see a white truck stop at the foot of the driveway and up walks a dude with sunglasses. I go out onto the porch, but do not open the door for the man, and proceeds to tell me that he is so and so The Steak Guy, he had some deliveries in my area. uh....ok. He asks me if I have heard of him, which I haven't and asks if we like steak. Yes we like steak. He invites me to come on out and look at the angus steaks he has. I decline, he says but it is 50% off for new customers today, no thanks. Only $2 per steak, you don't want to take a look...NO Thanks, I'm sure it is good but I'm not interested. He has chicken, fish, etc (OK my patience is gone now and I quite forcefully tell him to get lost).

He finally relents and drives a ways down the street to a man mowing his lawn and presumably starts his spiel all over again.

Seriously, are people buying meat from a white pick up with magnet signage that says "steaks" on it slapped on the side. He had what looked like 2 chest freezers in the back of the pickup but I didn't hear generator noise so how are they staying cold, not to mention where did this meat come from, has it been inspected, it is actually steak and on and on and on.

GROSS!! I have had one other door to door type person in the five years at this house, someone offering to "seal" my blacktop driveway - again no thanks. But the idea of buying food this way totally sceeves me out and I just had to post how shocked I am!

Thanks for listening....

Happens quite a bit down here in the south. FWIW, I decline as well. I LIKE the USDA.

I'd be too afraid of ending up in the freezer and later peddled door-to-door as cheap steak. :scared1:

I haven't seen a steak guy... Lots of windows, tree care, roofing, etc. Is it worse now that they can't call me on the phone anymore?

And I love that my city has a policy. Any door-to-door salespeople must have a permit from the city in order to do business. So most of the time, all I have to do is ask to see their permit and they walk away. Love it!

There are companies that have been doing this around here for years! I remember them even as a small kid.

DH remembers them in WV, where he grew up. His Dad has cows and they would get one processed every now and then. I wonder if those are the kinds of people doing this.

If my neighbor had a farm and had a cow processed sure I might buy some of the meat but a from a stranger who pops over my house...I can't do it.

Not steak, but I'm always happy to see a shrimp truck. :)

Fish/shellfish is a bit simpler, though -- you know immediately if it is bad. You can do a lot of things to beef to make it look fresher than it really is.

Door to door? New one on me.

I've seen the side of the road seafood & lobster guys. Not buying from them either.

there are actually quite a few companies that sell steaks to your door, such as Omaha Steaks.

that being said...that didn't sound too legitimate to me! :confused3

They come around my neighborhood every now and then. Last summer I got some steaks from a very nice lady and the steaks were delicious!

I have purchased online from Omaha steaks and had them delivered to my door - pretty darn good :thumbsup2....To me the difference is they are a reputable company that I can find an address for and complain to the better business bureau about if I have an unresolved issue, not just a guy with a truck and some mystery meat.

Yup, I have seen this a few times over the years. I always decline, because I have no idea if the steaks have been stored properly. I don't want to catch food poisoning to save a few bucks.

Well--I never have and never would but recently whilst in Scottsdale we saw a Pick up with I guess plastic lining (??) in the back and the kids were swimming in there! Splashing away...DD called it a 'Hillbilly Swimming Pool':lmao:

We have a couple of services in our area that deliver steaks, chicken etc. to your door. You have to sign up for the service though. One truck I see in the neighborhood is "horizon foods."

I have had them come to the door to see if I am interested in signing up, but I have never had them come to the door to sell their products outright.

:rotfl:

Was the truck moving while they were swimming? Must have been stationary right? I love that...

I've had that happen a few times in my area. I tell them the same thing every time: "I would never buy meat off the back of a truck." Ewwww.

Truck was moving Dizluvah..I am sure it was illegal. At first I thought she was kidding..then one of the kids dunked and came up like a drowned Rat. It was very funny...it was also 117 so who was the dummy?;)
