the heart attack grill in tempe, az. opened up a new diner that is a nightmare for those in persuit of a heart healthy diet. menu items include fries cooked in pure lard and a "triple bypass burger". waitresses dressed up as carricatures of nurses in skimpy uniforms and thigh high stockings have angered nurses who have demanded that the uniforms be 'retired'. i saw the owner of the business dressed in a white lab coat with a stethescope around his neck obviously mascarading as a physician. i think most people know that nurses aren't serving the food in short uniforms with cleavage and thigh high stockings and that its a theme restaurant not unlike hooters, 50's prime time cafe, etc. the uproar from the nurses has proved to be invaluable in terms of publicity and while i wouldn't want to eat the burger, those fries remind me of the kind my grandmother used to make in maine that i ate with vinegar and lots of salt. i might go for those...just once. ;)

Don't most nurses wear scrubs anyway?

While not a place that I would eat--they are just playing dress up.

Yes, most nurses wear scrubs these days, but everyone knows what a "traditional" nurse looks like.
I for one, don't like being portrayed as a slut.
I wouldn't even buy the nurses day pin with Jessica Rabbit.

Sorry, I am a traditionalist.

Ditch the slutty uniform.

When Hooters does--then I will agree..but everyone defends the other places--so I figure this place was worth a chance. :teeth:

I ate at a restaurant in MS once---it was M*A*S*H* themed (more the unit as opposed to the show). I think the waitress were nurses...or something. But they weren't slutty.

i am a nurse and while i may not like their choice of attire, i see it for what it is. nurses, who haven't dressed in a traditional uniform since the 70's, are really calling more attention to this than is warranted. its a gimmick to get, mostly men, by the owners admission, through the door. they serve "guy food", greasy burgers, fries and beer.

I wouldn't even associate a professional nurse with what is being described here. No more than anyone dressed in a Halloween costume with the profession they could be representing.

As someone who has lost a few family members to heart disease, I think the premise of jesting about the very real results of eating what they are serving is a turn off. But hey, different strokes for different folks.

I know a few nurses. A few of them are smokers and eat crappy food. A couple of them are health nuts. Most fall somewhere in between, just like the rest of us. They all wear scrubs. My point is that to assume that this bothers all nurses is kind of silly. I think that nurses are traditionally undervalued, but that is beside the point. I have pictures of my grandmother, who was an LPN on a psychiatric floor, wearing the traditional uniform that is being parodied by this restaurant. Were she here to comment on this issue I suspect she would have some wry comment about having too much puke on her uniform to be sexy.

Yes, I think the protesting nurses are being too sensitive.
I won't eat at the "heart attack grill" because I find the concept stupid and the menu unappealing but the offended nurses are being really silly IMO.

I personally find it offensive that this rest. chooses to make nurses out to dress as sluts. There is enough Sexual harashment going on to nurses now.
Us nurses don't need anymore "ideas" put in peoples heads. Nurses all over have been working long and hard to have the media/public show more of what real nurses do/ how they dress rather than the drool toy some people choose to treat us as.

Sorry but I think this is hilarious and I would definetaly make a road trip to go eat here. "Triple bypass burger"...LOL I think this goes back to the everyone being offended too easily mentality. This is a FUN restaurant, its just light hearted humor, if you are offended or think its insulting, dont go eat there. I wish we can go back to the day where people would just laugh at stuff instead of being insulted and suing everyone!(which im sure someone wil eventually do :( .. )

My sister is an RN and a very professional one at that. She feels that portrayals like this set back the nursing profession years. It is bad enough that some doctors have no respect for nurses and treat them like dirt, patients and their families treat them like their personal maids and butlers, and they are seriously shorthanded in most hospitals. They are highly trained intelligent professionals who have had an image problem with the slutty nurse thing over the years. If they want to portray the nurses like this, why not have some male "nurses" waiting tables in tight shorts and bare chests? Let's have some fair play. As far as the food goes, what you put in your body is none of my business. Hardee's sells heart attack on a bun also but without the "atmosphere". I'm all for light hearted fun with themed places, but people like to push the envelope.

Sorry I don't get that line of thought. I have met many nurses I have never thought of them "slutty". If people get the wrong idea about nurses, or any profession for that matter, because of something like this it wouldn't matter what they dressed like.

DH and I saw a story on this on 20/20 on the "Give me a Break" segment.

Needless to say, DH wants to have a road trip real soon to check it out.

I think the nurse protesting this restaurant is being overly sensitive.

Um, I think this whole nurse fantasy has been dead since 70's porn movies. I don't think the creators of this restaurant theme have been to a hospital lately.
