Are kids allowed to walk in the bars?

My question is: Do you take your underage children into bars at home? Do you find it acceptable to do so? Do you find it acceptable to teach your child that while there are "rules" in place, that it is OK for them to ignore the rule because it is inconvenient to you? Are you teaching them that rules only apply when you agree with them? Don't use the issue that it is a "Disney" ship to justify your ignoring the rules.

I agree with pcolabeachbum and dug720. My DH said it too. If I saw an underage person in the bar area after 9 I would either leave because I'm uncomfortable or to report it.

I'm shocked no CMs said anything to the kids in the bars after 9. Every time we have gone to the lounges after 9 we have been asked to show our keys getting into the area and saw them turning kids around even when the kids said they just wanted to run through. Both the outside door and the inside door had a "guard" CM.

I do remember a person fighting with a CM at the restrooms near Palo/Remy because they told them children weren't allowed in that area but the grandma said the rules say in the restaurants not the restrooms so their granddaughter would get to use the fancy restrooms or she'd report them. I felt bad for the CM even if it was a stretch to the rule I feel like if a CM tells you you aren't suppose to be somewhere you say oh so sorry and leave.

Are you guys familiar with the district lounge and surrounding areas on the Dream? Two bars are pass- throughs which all ages use, especially on windy nights when the decks are closed. Our daughter did not go in Evolution where the active is more mature.

To the original poster, I was making the point that the clubs are all very relaxed. Certainly walking through and standing would not cause a scene.

To those that question my parenting or say they would contact guest services, do you always drive the exact speed limit and pull over to call police when someone is going over the posted speed? Really? No one is that perfect. We all choose what we do and what 'rules' we break. A quiet 14 year sitting with 2 parents in an EMPTY DCL bar (used loosely) area, where NO one is drinking, listening to a musician is so far outside my realm of 'wrong.' Obviously, most of the staff in those areas feel that way too. Of course, I would never take my child to real bar where people are consuming alcohol (we don't drink) and most likely saying and doing inappropriate things. Two totally and completely different things going on here.

The district on the dream classes are not used as pass through after 9. As I said in my earlier post all 3 times I have been on a Disney cruise there has been someone at the front of the district starting at 9. They asked for cards and turned anyone with out an "adult" card away.

Here is the exact wording from Disney for the Dream:

"The District
District Lounge is in The District, an adults-only area aboard the Disney Dream with fun-filled venues designed to celebrate nightlife.
The District is home to a variety of distinct lounges and nightclubs, including:

Upscale or sporty, energetic or intimate, high-energy or low-key… there's a nightclub, bar, pub or lounge to cater to your every mood and taste."

As you can see it says adults-only right here for the whole District and practice is that it starts at 9pm.

I think what people are saying is that it might have been empty when you went in, but people here are saying they would have left if the kid was in there because they would not feel comfortable. People might indeed have wanted to go in, have a drink, and listen to the music but didn't because you felt like you had the right to break the rules and allow a kid into an adult area after hours. You have no way of knowing how much you having your kid in there cost them in business because other people saw the kid and left.

It had to be a pass through last week because they closed access to outside decks due to winds one night. Neither that night nor any other night did anyone stand at the entrance or check cards. There is no way it cost Disney any money when there were 3 other open bars at all times. Anyone who truly appreciates music and wanted to hear those acts would have been appreciative that a young person was also enjoying the talent. The rest of the people looking for a drink would have gotten a drink either there or another club.

And why would people not stay or leave a bar because you see someone who may be young (our daughter looks older) if that person is being respectful and quiet? I don't get that.

Probably because when an area is promoted as a place to unwind and enjoy a drink and music with only adults they might not want to sit there with a kid present even if the child is being respectful.

Yeah it isn't the end of the world that your daughter was there but at least admit that you broke the rules and Disney could have asked your daughter to leave.

No one is a perfect rule follower. But having a kid in the bars past 9 for that long sucks for those of us who want a kid free zone that was promised to us. There are tons of places you can go to spend time with your kids. Why bring them to the adult bar? And for you it's just one kid. For us it's a slippery slope that leads to several kids hanging out where they shouldn't. I get you don't care and I'm not going to convince you but I reiterate... that's messed up.

Not everyone feels comfortable drinking or being in an adult venue when children are present. Many feel stifled in being able to fully relax - and I am not talking about cursing. As @wilkeliza said, even discussing prime time shows such as Walking Dead or Scandal can be uncomfortable when there are known minors present. Because you never know when you are going to run into *those parents* who think it is fine for them to break the rules but then everyone needs to be aware that their precious little innocent angel is there and fuss at anyone who does or says something they don't want the snowflake to hear or see.

Also, on the Magic last week, the musicians rotated locations and times, so if you really wanted to hear a duo (or whatever) you could go to a location/time where kids were allowed. It's not like one act was ALWAYS in the adult areas only and ALWAYS after 9.

Yes! My DH said the same. Music is a lame excuse. Disney does a great job rotating them.

Sure Disney could have asked her to leave, or even if another adult had asked, we would have left. We certainly would have never objected to anything said or done in those areas if we found it offensive. We would have removed our child first. Most of these performances were not listed in the navigator as 18+ and there are no posted signs that these areas are adult only at certain times. The true bar (Evolution) is obviously for adults and the nightly descriptions say so.

I don't think everyone responding is really aware of the physical layout, the atmosphere, and the attitudes at these musical performances at night. You have to know the totality of the situation to really know how you would have reacted. I think what you have pictured in your mind must be way different than what really happened.

As for me admitting it was wrong. No, I won't do that. That is my decision to bear just as each of you must answer for speeding, doing illegal drugs, or drinking underage- all things that can harm others. Everyone has their own decisions to make. I don't blast others for whatever 'rules' they choose to break.

I have gotten under the skin of enough people in the past few days, so I didn't want to get involved, but I do have a legitimate question here for you @sefowler1

If you were sitting in the lounge that evening and 30-something year old me walked in, ordered a drink, walked over to your daughter and started hitting on her, what would you do? Would the fact that she were underage suddenly matter then?

All three of us who have responded have been in those areas. Why does the "vibe" matter when it comes to rules. Yes it is a very relaxed lounge with live music (except on super bowl sunday haha) but that does not change the fact that it is in the adults only area of the ship.

Bold..really? But you did take your young daughter to a" real bar" that serves booze. Would you not have gone in if there was a person drinking? I think you really missed the point. The "rules" are for everyone's safety and comfort.

Some people are not comfortable with either asking someone with children to leave, or telling a CM. Some people will just leave and not have an enjoyable time in a place they are supposed to be able to enjoy. A Bar is a bar and it is supposed to be for adults after 9.

I've never been on DCL but my comment applies to Disney in general. Yes, we know that Disney is a great place for families with kids. It is also a great place for adults who have either never had kids or whose kids are grown. We're in the latter category. We are surrounded by kids all day long in the parks, some well behaved and others not so much. We appreciate the option for adult only spaces at the end of the day and would really like to see Disney offer (and enforce) more adult only opportunities and even more chances to go to some restaurants character free (such as Cinderella's castle and Akershus) which would likely have fewer kids. We'd like to try a cruise but have no interest in 24/7 exposure to other people's kids. If Disney doesn't enforce the adult only rules on DCL, I suppose we won't try DCL until we're older and hopefully become grandparents. Until then we'll have to find something else.

To the PP, I appreciate that your child is very well behaved. Our DD was like that and people frequently commented on how well mannered she was. However we know that for every child that is well behaved, there are more that are not. It's easier to say no one under 18 is allowed in (assuming it is enforced) than to say only well behaved kids since the standard for what is "well behaved" is subjective.

There is one point I'd like to make here and that is as long as a parent isn't sneaking a child in, if the venue permits them in then it appears that the venue has changed the rule rather than a parent has broken the rule.

have seen a couple wander into Skyline (Fantasy) with a baby buggy containing an infant, park it, then try to order a drink from the bar. They were told children were not allowed in Skyline anytime that it is open for service. There are times you can wander in and nobody is there serving, just to look around, you can probably have your kid in there at that time.

and I'm not a fan of "my kid should be allowed in the adult area because he/she wants to hear the music and it's not hurting anybody." They rotate the musical acts and have them do shows in the family areas too. And if the venue permits them, with Disney it might be a case of "we don't want to make the parent upset" rather than the rule has changed. If they're going to have adult areas but permit kids in them during the time they are supposed to be adult areas, then they don't have adult areas, and if that is the case then DCL should say so.
