Are costumes for kids too revealing?

I would say no but maybe thats because when I was growing up I'd wear my dance costumes for Halloween and they were far skimpier than these costumes. We'd have dance costumes for our competitions with just bloomers as the bottoms, bare midriffs etc. So compared to my Halloween costumes from 20 years ago, these are quite tame.

Think along these lines but on much younger girls than the ones pictured. I was about 9ish when I had costumes similar to this for dance recitals:

probably a "bad mom", but DD is wearing this:

we are adding a black body body suit, so no skin showing on chest or arms. It also takes some of the effect away from the bodice, as it all blends in.

Also adding black leggings, so no legs showing and takes away from the effects of the short skirt. IT is kind of large on her so the skirt hangs longer than it should. Also, no boots - she is wearing flat ballet type shoes.

Add all this on a younger kid and the effect is quite different.

She really wanted to be a goth fairyand really wanted the purple wings and skirt - I told her we would only be getting that costume with major modifications. She is happy about it, but would have liked to wear boots.

:)

We kind of went the same route for my DD10, buying an adult costume and taming it down. DD10 is just under 5ft tall and about 75lbs. All of the teen costumes were way too short, and let's face it inappropriate. We wound up getting her a "60's Mod Dress" in a women's x-small. It's supposed to be really short, but on her it comes just a couple of inches above the knee (not any shorter than a dress she would wear to school). I'm going to flip up her hair and she's going to have the Marlo Thomas from "That Girl" look.

I'm afraid it's only going to get worse trying to find Halloween costumes as we get further into the tween years.

DD8 was relatively easy. She's petite so even short things are never really short on her. :lmao: She's going to be a "Geisha Girl". We got a really cute robe and chopsticks for her hair.

My 11 year old is being a deal or no deal girl- Wearing a Black KNEE LENGTH DRESS! with gold shoes and carry a briefcase with number- and big earrings. She came up with the idea and we created it out of mostly stuff we had(except the case- it's a games case I got for $7)

I agree that those in the party store are slutastic. Modifications are necessary but really why is that? Why can't they be appropriate.
My son's 14 year old girl "friend" is going as a go go girl- very appropriately dressed and she looks adorable!(and he thinks so too)

French maid for a toddler? Really that's crazy.
Oh and my daughter ended up making her costume because she said "I don't want to be a hooker" when she looked at all the ones online. good girl.

I don't know about the kids ones, but I went to look for one myself and I think all the party stores and halloween stores all get their supply from the same hooker supply company! :scared1:

the 60's mod dress idea sounds really cool - wish I get DD to do something like that!:)

When you Trick or Treat in this part of the country, you are usually bundled up to keep warm. No one would be going out in just a costume. brrrrrrr

Does anyone remember the ones that had the inflatable alien heads that you wore like a hat = the face was supposed to be painted green or whatever and was supposed to be safer than the masks.

Kooky Spooks! I had one of those!
