Are costumes for kids too revealing?

YES!!!!!!

I have a 12 year old who didn't know what to do this year. I took her to iParty and there was nothing appropriate for her to wear. They were either too childish/young for her or they were too risque/trashy for her to wear.

The only one she liked was the "Major Flirt" costume and I said NO WAY. It was a mini skirt soldier dress and it said "Major Flirt" on the top. I don't think so. She says she 'thought' it was the costume she liked last year that was "Fashion Police". It wasn't.

It's now looking like she'll create her own costume. We were thinking of her being a WDW tourist since we have all the accessories! ;)

It only gets worse when they get into adolescence. :scared1:

Tell me about it!!! DD & I just got into it for the longest time to attempt to get her a costume. Finally got her one because she's short, the outfit actually came down to just above her knees (so longer than it appears on this model) even though it was listed as "sexy woman" one. So, I approved it since it was actually quite modest compared to a lot of them (I wouldn't let her get belly show ones either and that eliminated 1/2 of them). She has a tank top she wears underneath it along with she wore her gymnastic shorts for the party with her flip flops. I think if she's smart she will wear her black sweatpants with trick-or-treating as it's COLD here. I also told her she has to wear her gym shoes with it with going out.

My DD is NOT big but they must make these costumes itsy bitsy teeny tiny. I know there were a couple other woman there who were on my side so to speak with my costumes but one was saying that the adult ones ran super small.

We found a teen one that we could somewhat agree on, she tried it on and it was supposedly a 14-16 -- it was super tight on her and adult small t-shirts look like a nightshirt on her, there is no way this costume was a true 14-16!! This one was the adult small and it fit her but definitely no growth room.

I'm Glad that My DD is still in the Princess stage...She did want to be Hannah Montana for a little bit, which wasn't THAT bad, but once i showed her all the sparkly princess dresses, she decided she wanted to be Sleeping Beauty. (I have to admit that I steered her towards that one cause it is long sleeved.) The Disney Store Alice in Wonderland costume is so cute this year too!

Ugghh....our 10 yr old dd was that kid!!! I bought her costume at Target, and she didn't try it on until she got dressed for Trunk or Treat Saturday night. She wanted to be a girl vampire. Dh and I joked between ourselves that she was the "trampire"!! The costume was floor length in the back, but the front had a short skirt. It didn't look that short at the store, but ick, when she put it on!! I've bought her some tights to wear with it for Halloween. She's small for her age, so it was the size 8 costume. Lesson learned for next year, she'll be dressing like a nun!

We had this happen last year. DD10 picked out a devil costume. It was red sequin-ish bell-bottom type pants with a red sequin-ish sleeveless top, horns and a pitchfork. Looked innocent enough on the package. We didin't have time to try it on in the store. We got home and she put it on. Wowza!!! It looked like she had mugged Britney Spears!!!!:lmao: She's tall and skinny. The pants sat very low on her hips and the top only came to about two inches above her belly button. She had at least 6 inches of skin showing!!!:scared1: We wound up putting a red leotard under the costume and the "shirt" was then more of a vest.

This year we gave ourselves plenty of time at the costume store to try things on and believe me we needed every minute of it.

I think those costumes are perfectly acceptable......So long as your goal is to dress your little girl as a skank. :lmao: DD's pirate costume has PANTS this year. Nothing skimpy for her. :thumbsup2 I'm not raising a hooker in training. :rotfl2: I want her to get candy in her plastic pumpkin, not dollar bills. :scared:

Is it just me, or does the costume on the girl in the picture make her look pregnant? :confused3

My DD is going to be Major Flirt (she is 10). It was kind of an accident.
She is going through a stage where she wanted something that wasn't pink or princessy. So we found the Major Flirt -but I didn't know that is what it said. The package said Major Cutie. I did not realize there was a name sewn on the costume and that it said Major Flirt.
So we are covering that up and wearing leggings under the shorts.
Sigh
next time we will start working on it sooner

My rule is homemade costumes all the way. I just finished sewing a floor length Flamenco gown for my DD8 that was a remake of one I wore when I was a kid. Mom would never let us buy costumes either - even though I really did want one of those plastic masks! My DD and I talk constantly about what is appropriate dress and inappropriate. She will point to certain costumes or outfits and tell me - she should not be wearing that it is too short! I love her!

I agree - I don't know when the idea of halloween costumes went from "dress up as something scary" to "dress up as something slutty" but it sure has. My daughter is 21 now so I had no idea the little girl costumes had gotten so bad. When my kids were little we usually made our costumes and they usually started out as sweat suits or pj's! I miss those days... sigh...

We call these children "prostiTOTS."

Example: "Bettylou, don't go out Halloweenen lookin like a prostitot."

Or the New Jersey version: "Yo Marie, I hope you and your cousints aren't goin out like that. Youse look like prostitots."

Maybe she's going as the unknown Spears sister...

Or maybe she's going as an "innoslut" (a term coined by my teenager DD).

agnes!

I agree, but I don't think she was :confused3 Maybe she was dressed as a "fallen" angel :confused3 :rotfl2: :sad2:

Maybe..:rotfl: Right now I'm trying to find the quote (I think it's from the Bible, but I can't be sure) where God punishes a group of angels for having intimate relations with humans.

FOUND IT!

Genesis 6: 2-4: “...the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown”.

Popular Interpretation
It is thought that “the sons of God” are angels who, on being thrown out of heaven for their sin, came down to earth and married attractive women, resulting in them having very large children.

I just watched the segment. Sheez...the whole sexy+little girl thing is just beyond pathetic.

DD is going as a mummy, probably a hula girl mummy LOL.

DS is going as a pirate, again LOL.

probably a "bad mom", but DD is wearing this:

http://www.buycostumes.com/Wicked-Dark-Fairy-Adult-Costume/34105/ProductDetail.aspx

we are adding a black body body suit, so no skin showing on chest or arms. It also takes some of the effect away from the bodice, as it all blends in.

Also adding black leggings, so no legs showing and takes away from the effects of the short skirt. IT is kind of large on her so the skirt hangs longer than it should. Also, no boots - she is wearing flat ballet type shoes.

Add all this on a younger kid and the effect is quite different.

She really wanted to be a goth fairyand really wanted the purple wings and skirt - I told her we would only be getting that costume with major modifications. She is happy about it, but would have liked to wear boots.

:)

YES! Definately! Trying to find costumes for myself is so hard. Teen costumes show your butt, no way around it. I can't believe it's spreading to kid's costumes.

yeah but you are modifying it. I dont have a problem with that at all its the ones who let their their kids come out like theyre about to apprentice at a night job (if you know what I mean) that I have a problem with.

Its one thing to put actual clothes on under an outfit and another to go ahead and wear it as is skin showing and all.

thanks! I was hoping so! The big thing was no skin showing! She wore boots last year with a pirate costume (longer skirt). As much as she wanted boots this year, I just wanted to go as far as possible in the other direction!:)

yep, some of them are. I make my kids.
Tonight is the town contest. I have one being bag of jelly beans, one a ballerina in a jewelry and one a frozen head in a fridge.

I have definitely seen some that my DGD (10) would absolutely not be allowed to wear..
