You can have genital herpes on your mouth, and you can have cold sores on your, ahem. Just because the virus is labeled simplex 1 or 2, doesn't dictate its location.
You can transfer either virus to either place.
So for those of you talking to your teenagers about oral you know what, that's a VERY good argument for staying away from it.
hemispheredancer said:Yes, they are contagious. They are even more contagious before they happen. It is called shedding. Get some Zovirax or Valtrex from your doctor and get that going at the first sign of the cold sore. Because you never know when the sore will happen it is almost impossible to not pass the virus on. That is why there is so many herpes cases, genital or otherwise.
Tigger&Belle said:YOu would think so, because I got them as a child from my mother, as did at least one sibling and my mother never kissed us on the lips.
However, in my 23 years of marriage, I haven't passed them to my DH, which is surprising and makes me wonder how contagious it is.

I don't think I'm asking my elderly mom.

Tigger&Belle said:At least I know it was NOT genital herpes I got from my mom. Well, I guess I have no idea which simplex it really is...I don't think I'm asking my elderly mom.
