Are Cold Sores on your Mouth considered Herpes?

Yup...oral herpes

It is still the herpes simplex virus.

It is NOT the same as genital herpes though. If you have a cold sore, get some Abreva, it really helps cut down the time it takes to heal.

But it's still contagious. When the sores are open you can pass them to others by kissing.

Yes, they are contagious. They are even more contagious before they happen. It is called shedding. Get some Zovirax or Valtrex from your doctor and get that going at the first sign of the cold sore. Because you never know when the sore will happen it is almost impossible to not pass the virus on. That is why there is so many herpes cases, genital or otherwise.

Ok, asked my nurse mother about one of the posts.

You can have genital herpes on your mouth, and you can have cold sores on your, ahem. Just because the virus is labeled simplex 1 or 2, doesn't dictate its location.

You can transfer either virus to either place.

So for those of you talking to your teenagers about oral you know what, that's a VERY good argument for staying away from it.

We JUST covered this today in my college psychology class on Human S**ual Behavior and this is entirely correct. It is a MYTH that just because you have it on your mouth means you cannot pass it to umm....other body parts and vice versa. Simplex 1 and 2 are both passed through skin to skin contact and like mucus membranes, so they like the mouth and ummm.....and don't care which one they end up at. There is no cure, it is something you have for the rest of your life and can be passed on even if there is no visibile signs. It is not going to kill you however, like some other diseases, and is something that can be lived with but it is not much fun sometimes. You can get both simplex 1 and 2 as well, so just because someone else says they have herpes doesnt mean that just because you do too its ok to not be careful. The current treatments work very well and can help quite a bit. There is no cure however, and that is why there are so many new cases every year. Its very important that active young people know this to be able to make informed decisions. So many think oral only contact is "safe" and it is not.

YOu would think so, because I got them as a child from my mother, as did at least one sibling and my mother never kissed us on the lips.

However, in my 23 years of marriage, I haven't passed them to my DH, which is surprising and makes me wonder how contagious it is.

In college I knew a girl that got genital herpes on her mouth from her boyfriend. Thats how she found out he was dabbling in other pools. I felt bad for her and her poor mouth looked horrible

They can be passed from your mouth to other parts. I know from personal experience.

I get these in that sensitive spot under your nostril. Hurts like a you know what. I take 400 mg. of Acyclovir or Zovirax 3x a day and that helps a lot.
