Are Cold Sores on your Mouth considered Herpes?

I would love to see someone on this board say, "Yup! I've got the bad herpes!"

I thought it might happen. But, no.

Isn't the bad herpes virus called herpes zoster?

I don't remember my STD training. I know there is a Herpes zoster, but don't remember if it is the bad herpes or not.

Hmm... Maybe you should make a poll. :rolleyes1 :stir: :lmao:

Do you have the bad herpes?

Yes.............. No............. Not Sure (You KNOW someone'd answer not sure.)

Think I should make it anonymous?

Yes, it can effect your eyes as well.

Herpes zoster is the shingles/chickenpox virus.

There are two major forms of oral herpes simplex viral infections. Primary herpes, also known as acute herpetic gingivostomatitis, represents the initial infection by the virus and usually occurs in childhood. The second form is recurrent herpes simplex, which mainly occurs on the lips and is known as herpes *****lis. Oral and perioral herpes infections are most often caused by herpes simplex virus, type I. Herpes simplex virus type II is usually responsible for genital herpes infections. One can acquire herpes simplex virus type II oral infections or herpes simplex type I genital infections through oral-genital contact. Clinically, HSV type I and type II oral lesions cannot be distinguished from each other.

That should do it....

Two things...First, I'm NOT asking my mother! But I'm pretty sure it's just the boring old cold sore variety and I do know it's on the lip. Annoying, though. And I do have Valtrex that I take at the first sign. I do wonder when I fill the Rx if the people at the pharmacy wonder which kind I have. :lmao:

Second of all, I'm still waiting for the poll on whether or not guys would be less upset if they found out that their wives or SO were having a fling with a lesbian lover than if they were having a fling with a guy. That anonymous poll was supposed to be posted months ago! And not by me--I know what my DH's answer would be. :rotfl:

That's an easy one to figure out!! :teeth: I actually know someone this happened to. He was all "excited" when he discovered them. Thought he might get some action on his own. He was upset when they rudely kicked him out and his wife divorced him.

T&B, you could NEVER have the bad herpes, due to being a - what did you call it? - a regular housewife? I am shocked to hear that you know what the bad herpes is! ;) :)

And I would LOVE to see the lesbian-affair poll, although I think I already know the answer...:)

The bad part about herpes is you never know when it will strike. The days leading up to the actual cold sore/genital sore are actually the most contagious. The best thing to do is nip it with Valtrex/Zovirax at the FIRST sign (tingling, itching) and get that going. It shortens the severity of the outbreak but does NOT prevent it from being spread. You may kiss your SO (or oral acts) and then three or four days later a cold sore is on your lip. You have just infected that other person. They may not exhibit symptoms for weeks, months, or years. There is a blood test that can confirm if you have the HSV I/II antibodies.

Can you catch it if say someone touches their mouth and then you shake their hand? Is it that contagious?

As to the "bad herpes", lets not forget the mighty 3 Musketeers Bar. :rotfl2:

For the record, my DH would be just as upset, if not more! I would be more upset if I found my DH with another man. No way I could compete with that.

Christine, I think that's what a lot of guys think, or at least that's the stereotype. Yikes for your friend.

Ive seen photos on line of this, its called whitlow or something...

M SIL has "cold sores" - its terrible people dismiss herpes as cold sores...she has passed it to my nephew now, who spent the holiday in pain & saying "I dont know how this happened" - she obviously did not educate him on it...people wont admit they have it, or refer to it as only cold sores...thats why it is constantly passed on to new people!

Infected people should unite to fund a cure for it, & put the drug co's out of business form collecting on others misery! Though not life threatening, its a terrible, untreatable disease in 2006! You have to wonder if its the stigma that keeps us from getting a cure, or the drug companies trying to keep it active to sell their RX's.

Actually, she could have genital herpes and infected you while you were passing through the birth canal. Some people are carriers of the virus asymptomatically, which means they'll never break out but do carry the virus in their systems.

Right, that was my original point, which is what I was saying when I forgot the word "not" and got myself in trouble...

Not that I've ever had the conversation with her (and I never will ;) ), but as far as I know, she has the lip kind of cold sores and passed those on to us. But I'll never know for sure.

I got them when I was like 5 years old (the simplex ones). I was in the hospital because I could not eat. I never got them again. I now have three kids & my youngest got them when she was 2 & ended up in the hospital & on IV because she couldn't eat (she is now 13). She flares up every once in a while but no one in our house ever gets them beside her. She has them now as a matter of fact. The doc has us mix 1 tsb of Kopectate & 1 tsb of Beneydral. She rinces (spits out) her mouth 2-3 times a day with it. We do not even call the doc anymore, we know exactly what we have to do. The Kopectate makes the Beneydral stick to the lining of the mouth to relieve the pain. The virus runs its course & in about a week she will be ok. She gets them about 4 times a year or so. Again, I want to say, no one in our house gets them when she has her flare ups...
