Are Buzz lightyear and toy story the same?

With Buzz, you control direction you are facing with a joystick. Depending on how you are using that to move around, it can be jerky. With TSMM, you don't control the motion of the vehicle. When your car moves to the next set of screens, the spin can be a bit much, but I don't know that I would call it jerky.

They are both shooting games and that is where the similarity between them ends
Nothing else about them are similar.
Well, I guess theme a tiny bit but even that doesn't seem the same to me even if Buzz is from Toy Story. Buzz's shooting game is space themed and not really Toy Story themed, if that makes sense.

Right, the Buzz ride is more based off the cartoon show Buzz Lightyear of Star Command, and less so off of Toy Story. It's more like the fictional world that Buzz inhabits as a character, not the "real" world where a child owns the toy.

To the OP, other than being shooting games the two rides are not very similar at all. Buzz uses an old-style omnimover system (in fact the very same one from If You Had Wings/Dreamflight) and moves very slowly. You can rotate your cart with a joystick, and you can jerk it around, but it is mild. Toy Story Mania moves much faster as you whip and spin around u-turn like corners before stopping at each station for a different game. The motion is far more extreme than Buzz, though there isn't much of it overall.

Agreed.

I will tell you that I am HORRIBLE at Buzz, but pretty good at TSMM!! On Buzz, it's like I can never track which red laser is mine... too confusing -- too many people shooting at the same large area at once. With TSMM, that problem doesn't exist -- only 2 shooters per screen and each has a different color that they're shooting.

For our family, TSMM is a must every trip -- we use a FP for it. Buzz is a nice-to-do for us, and we do it when lines are short enough.

Definitely experience both, but Toy Story is lightyears ahead of Buzz (pun intended, I guess).

Buzz is far better than what was there before it, but the ride could use a minor overhaul. Not so much the ride and setting itself, but the gunplay is bad as far as getting substantial feedback on where you are shooting and aiming.

As everyone said, TSMM is newer, better, funner technology. The feedback from you pulling the canon is accurate and real-time. Buzz is a little off with shooting and targets. It's a little more "cheap" feeling. If there's no line, do Buzz for the experience, but it's really not worth waiting for. TSMM definitely is.

I'm so surprised by all of the responses criticizing Buzz! While I realize the mechanics of TSMM are technically better, I feel like Buzz is so much more immersive! I like that I'm in an actual setting shooting real targets as opposed to just screens. (Assuming I'm properly remembering TSMM - I've only done it once, but have done Buzz a ton of times. I've only been once since TSMM opened.)

The only knock on Buzz is not knowing where you are shooting. I feel the same on MiB at Universal. Ride is fun but forget figuring out your red dot out of all the others

This and also I feel like Buzz requires more skill - figuring out how to maneuver the vehicle while aiming and shooting. The static nature of TSMM vehicles makes it less fun for me.

Agreed.

Totally agree - great description! And as others said, both have their own things that people like, so try both if you can, but TSMM is a must do, we like to do first thing and FP to do twice, and usually go to HS a second morning to do it again first thing !

True. Honestly, I don't really pay much attention to my score on either. The only shooting game in good at is Men In Black. One time our vehicle had enough people who maxed out the scoring that we didn't get the memory wipe and instead were shown our suits at the end of the ride. I think they've made it more difficult since then, but it was a very proud moment for my family, haha!

I agree that I am horrible at getting targets at Buzz (and MIB at US) but I'm pretty good at TSM. I think TSM is way better! Except my arm hurts like heck after :)

Reading these responses is so interesting! I LOVE Buzz. Don't really care for TSMM. Even though TSMM is more technologically advanced than Buzz, I always have way more fun on Buzz.

I like TSM better then Buzz with the exception of the gun. I don't get the pulling the string system, I'd rather have a gun type set up. But, since I don't keep score anyway, everything else is about the same. Different sets, but, the same objective.

Me too! Buzz is my absolute favorite MK attraction. I especially love it on evening EMH when I can ride continuously 3-4 times toward the very end of the night.

I like both equally, I can find my laser on Buzz so usually do pretty good & Toy Story I take my time for accuracy but still miss on like the Aliens a lot so I'm not as good. For jerkiness Buzz is if you jerk the steering from left to right to left to right chasing down targets. Toy Story can make me a little dizzy when we travel room to room. Overall though both are fun.

I think Buzz could use a little sprucing up, but I generally like it a lot. I wish the guns were handheld and not attached to the vehclce. I usually have no trouble finding my red dot, but I've played a lot of laser tag in my day. Also, Buzz doesn't tire out my arm like TSMM does. If I had to vote, I'd go with Buzz, though the Disneyland version where the guns are handheld. TSMM is fun, but overrated in my opinion.
