APs: is 6 month promo deal better than renewal discount?

That 6-months free deal is really sweet, but our passes expire in mid may, more than 30 days after promo expiration, so we can't take advantage of it. I'm wondering if I should just buy brand-new passes in April (losing the renewal discount) to lock in 6 months free.

But I can't remember how big the renewal discount is on preferred - does anyone recall?

After Feb Mardi Gras, we're not returning until HHN.
Does above plan make sense or am I missing something?

(I guess DH will only get 3 months free on his, since he has a Power pass.)

Don’t quote me, but I believe renewal discounts are between 20-25%. I also don’t think you can buy a new one with the promo deal with an existing pass and idk how you would ‘cancel’ your current one.

If it is any help, I paid $412 to renew my 3 park preferred AP just before the 6 month promo started (I got an extra 3 months only).

I didn't even think of that. I just figured I'd buy new ones outright online and resubmit all my info again as if I never had passes. Figured they'd be glad to sell them at full purchase price vs at a discount. (I actually did that w/Disney passes last year - instead of renewing, I just bought 2 new ones outright before a rumored price increase. Their renewal discount isn't as good as UO and I didn't want the "clock" to start running on the new expiration, since I knew I wouldn't be back for 8 months. I think my passes still had a month left when I bought the new ones and there was no problem.)

But maybe UO is different.

Aww..just before. Bummer. But 3 months is nice too. I'd be happy with that: I'm just worried they won't be offering anything at all once the 6 month one ends.

Are they offering the extra months to those that upgrade a park to park ticket to an AP? Promo or otherwise?

I find it hard to believe that universal wouldn’t take my money to buy a new pass.

Then buy a new pass, then you can let us know how it works out for you and then all of us AP holders will know.

Right now, I think everyone is just guessing. It would be nice to actually know.

FYI: the buy 2 days get 2 days promotion has been extended until June 30, 2019. It originally ended May 31, 2019. Since our trip fell at the end of June, this promo did not help us, but now it saves us about $45 a ticket.

Just saw this posted in another thread, should be useful to y'all!

I plan on doing that on March 14, so if no one else has an answer I’ll be back to post.
I’m reporting back that today I bought a new preferred pass(I was on a school trip and used that ticket when I upgraded. I used all the same info that I used for the seasonal). My old seasonal pass still has 3 months left on it as far as I know.

If you purchase with flex pay; is there a catch with the 6 months free? I’m confused by some of what I’m reading?

No catch. You pay the down payment, then you will be charged for 11 monthly payments. The 6 months free is added on to the end.

If I were you I"d be tempted to wait, let your pass lapse and get a new one when you come for HHN. You never know they might be doing a new promo by then. I wouldn't want there to be that many months when I wasn't using the pass.
