PORT CANAVERAL -- - Canaveral Port Authority commissioners on Wednesday said they are optimistic about the coming year at the port, on the day an industry trade group predicted that cruise passenger traffic will increase to a record 12.8 million in 2008.
Cruise Lines International Association said its 24 member cruise lines project carrying 10.5 million passengers originating from North America and 2.3 million from international markets in 2008.
The 12.8 million total compares with an estimated 12.6 million worldwide passengers in 2007 and 12.01 million in 2006. The estimated 1.6 percent growth in passenger counts in 2008, however, would be less than the 4.9 percent in 2007.
Port Canaveral is the second-busiest cruise port, behind Miami, for passenger counts.
Canaveral Port Authority Commissioner Chairman Joe Matheny said local port officials have been negotiating with cruise lines that use Port Canaveral, hoping to finalize deals this year that eventually will bring the new, larger cruise ships to Brevard County's seaport.
Matheny said the captain of the Disney Wonder, which sails on three- and four-day cruises from Canaveral, recently told him the Wonder has been sailing at close to its full passenger capacity.
"Our ships are going out very full," Port Canaveral Commissioner Ralph Kennedy said.
Kennedy said port officials have been taking the steps necessary to attract larger cruise ships, such as preparing to enlarge the port's western turning basin.
The Cruise Lines International Association said in a statement that its projections are based on early reports from travel agents of strong bookings for cruises during this year's "wave season" -- January through March. That's traditionally the busiest booking period of the year for cruises.
