April 19, 2008 - Western - VERY Early Roll Call - Anyone??!!

We have changed plans. We're going to WDW this week, instead of the cruise. We're thinking of renewing our vows on the Magic in 12/09 instead of at WDW, so we're going to cancel this cruise, already booked WDW..w/dining for the first time!!

Have fun everyone!!

Hi all,

We booked the REAS package and so we should be able to get online and book excursions and Palo and all that on January 5th.

But I haven't received anything from out TA or Disney?

Can anyone fill me in on anything I NEED to know before I log on and blindly reserve my week away?

Thanks!

Sorry, had to do it. It's one of my favorite songs.popcorn::

What kinds of excursions are you looking to do?

Hi there!

Key West: no plans other than to walk around and maybe buy these flip flops everyone talks about?
Grand Cayman: snorkling of some type
Cozumel: the cooking class
CC: no idea? maybe rays?

Any info would be helpful. My TA emailed to say she had sent the packet out, but I'm traveling for work for the next few weeks and the chances of DH opening the packet and sharing the info with me are....slim.

43 pages later, I guess we're kind of new to the game! But if we could get added to the roll, I'll eventually get thru the thread to see what everyone's doing!

Well, you got me beat, madgomez. I'm page 45 and just now saying that I'm going to be joining you guys for the April 19 Western cruise. It'll be

me - Denise
DH - Jim
DS14 - James
DS12 - Joey

We're from Tallahassee. Anyone else coming from the N. Fla area?

And just like you, madgomez, I'm going to go through this whole thread so I can catch up what everyone's doing. I wanted to post on here last night but I wouldn't do it until I knew for sure that this was when we were going.

Oh, and I'm so very looking forward to my first cruise. I have some friends who have gone cruising together for the past couple of summers and they kept asking me to go with them. It was very tempting becuase I've hard how much fun it can be, but I kept telling them I'm saving myself for Mickey. And now to the wonderful guys at the DIS Unplugged podcast and Dreams Unlimited, I get to do my first cruise as a Disney cruise!! Talk about when you wish upon a star!!!

 :yay: :cheer2:  :yay: :cheer2:

Welcome Hypermom :grouphug:

ndepaola: KW is the perfect port to just walk and relax.
GC: I HIGHLY recommend doing the swimming with the stingrays. We did it through Nativeway last year and loved it.
Coz: we did the catamaran snorkel and really liked it

Just my thoughts. It doesnt matter what you do, it will be the best vacation ever. :cool1:

I think I messed up the spreadsheet. I was trying to sort it by column A so I could see if my name was in there but now there seem to be a lot of kids that are listed without parents listed with them. I don't know if we're still using the spreadsheet and if we are, I'm heartily sorry I messed it up. 4newtocruise, if you'd be kind enough to fix it (if we're still using it) I promise I'll download and make any other sortings and such in my own copy so I don't mess it up for everyone.

Wow... ain't this a grand way to introduce myself to the group :rolleyes1

Hi all,

Well, I've spent the past few hours reading this whole thread. I figured this would be a good place to start after having read all the info I could at Dreams Unlimited and the DCL site last night.

I have a ton of questions which I will list here. Anyone that gets through any part of this list earns my extreme gratification.

1) Wow... so many of you guys are from New York. My hubby Jim is from White Plains.

2) Oh, by the way, I found out today we're in 2105. Now who does that mean we're going to be near? That's probably on the spreadsheet that I messed up. What's the latest version of the spreadsheet, please?

3) I read somewhere that there are no lifeguards at the pool. I have a 14 year old son James who'll be hanging out at the Stack and probably heading to the pool sometimes. I'm also considering letting my 12yo son Joey check himself in and out of the Oceaneer's Lab. If they decide to head to the pools would they be safe or do I need to make a rule against that/

4) I'm a bit confused about the food and drink onboard the ship. I know breakfast, lunch and dinner are included in the cost. But what about if the kids want a hot dog or an ice cream or a soda? I know there's the soda station. Is that the only place they can get free soda? Are there places that they can get free food during non-meal times? Those of you with teenaged sons know how they can eat :-)

5) Actually, I'm wondering about all onboard charges. Can someone give me a pretty good idea of what costs extra? I know alcohol costs extra... btw, how much is a beer? But what else?

6) I heard a rumore that the Stack is becoming a 15-17 year old only place and that DCL's doinig something different with the 13-14 year old age group. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

7) I know I won't be able to afford the pictures given some of the prices I've seen. Would the CMs be willing to take pictures with my camera the way the Photopass guys do?

8) I've been reading about the ruins in Mexico. Is this an excursion or something you go and visit yourself?

9) So are we to go to Home Depot and get the lime green paint chips? Not sure what that means. Someone please let me know what to get. And are we doing the meet at 2:00? I'm presuming that's 2:00 on Saturday the 19th? Where is that meet going to be? Kids included?

10) Speaking of check-in day, how does that all work? Do I take my own bags to my room like I do when I stay at the Pop Century? If not, how long will it take before I get my bags? Should I take a backpack with stuff?

11) I know you guys are very much looking forward to the 90 day mark so you can start booking excursions and such. Is there anything good left for us newbies at the 75 day mark?

12) Someone mentioned that all rooms were category 11 GTY and then clarified that meant Guarantee Category. But what does Guarantee Category mean?

13) The hubby mentioned quite conversationally last night that I needed to get used to the idea of my kids parasailing. I'm guessing we'll do that at Castaway Cay? How much does it cost? Age limit?

14) I'm trying to decide whether or not to get passports. DCL told me last night that we don't need them for cruising -- that if we have birth certificates and photo IDs for the adults, that would be sufficient because the government changed the law so that we don't need passports for cruising until the summer. But everyone's told me that I should get them anyway, just in case something happens (I know I wouldn't be able to fly back into the States without one) and/or to make sure we didn't get turned away at the boat. But it's going to be like $400 to get passports for the four of us. I just don't know what to do. Thoughts/comments?

Sorry for all the questions, but I really don't know what I'm doing. I'm spending every free minute I get online looking for information, but I have sooooo many questions. I hope you guys will be patient with me. Thanks a billion!!!!

Hi Hypermommy
Welcome to our group.
I will try to answer some of your questions but I´m sure the others will fill in the blanks.
Check-in:you drop of your luggage with the potres outside the terminal. If you didn´t receive luggage tags with you docs(like it happened to us last time)they have extras. You write your stateroom nr.on them and the luggage will be brought to your stateroom door. After that you and your family go to the terminal and check-in.
I strongly suggest that you do the online Check-in.that makes the whole progress much smoother.
Food:all the food is free, only an extra charge,if you book Palo.Even Room service is free but a small tip is appreciated.
Extra cost:as you mentioned,Alkohol is extra as is the Spa,Souveniers,Pictures
Excursions and Tips.
I totally agree, the pictures are expencive.Thats why we only ge the Embarkation foto.I don´t know,if they will take your camera but it never hurts to ask.The CM are very friendly and helpful.
Ruins excursion:I guess you mean the Excursion to Tulum. We will do this. But what I learned from the Boards I wouldn´t do that on my own. This one is often delayed and they hold the ship only for the Disneyexcursion.
Can´t help you on the Stack or the Clubs and the Life Guards.
Bye for now and
a Happy new year to all of you.
Take care

We are approx. 30 minutes north of WP.:)

2) Oh, by the way, I found out today we're in 2105. Now who does that mean we're going to be near? That's probably on the spreadsheet that I messed up. What's the latest version of the spreadsheet, please?

Last year we were in 2108 and loved that location. You will be near the laundry and the aft elevators. I do believe someone here on the boards has 2108 this trip. We are in 2614 so will be across the ship from you. :woohoo:

3) I read somewhere that there are no lifeguards at the pool. I have a 14 year old son James who'll be hanging out at the Stack and probably heading to the pool sometimes. I'm also considering letting my 12yo son Joey check himself in and out of the Oceaneer's Lab. If they decide to head to the pools would they be safe or do I need to make a rule against that/

There are CM's at the pools. I would not be concerned about safety. Your kids will not go to the Mickey pool because it is for little ones, the adut pool is off limits for them also. The Goofy pool is so small and shallow, they probably wont be there often. It is safe as long as they know how to swim and act responsibly. :thumbsup2

There is plenty of food to be had at any time of day. Pizza, hot dogs, burgers, chicken tenders, french fries, wraps, ice cream, etc. All free of charge. The soda station is free also, but I do believe that is the ony free soda besides when you are at dinner.

5) Actually, I'm wondering about all onboard charges. Can someone give me a pretty good idea of what costs extra? I know alcohol costs extra... btw, how much is a beer? But what else?

We purchased a picture package last time. It worked out great. You can keep pictures your want, but then if you like a better one later in the week you can swap them. It was approx. $120.00. Dont know offhand the prices for beer and such. Although I drank plenty, I usually get the drink of the day and dont think about cost. It's vacation.

6) I heard a rumore that the Stack is becoming a 15-17 year old only place and that DCL's doinig something different with the 13-14 year old age group. Anyone have any knowledge on this?

Dont know. Sorry. :confused3

7) I know I won't be able to afford the pictures given some of the prices I've seen. Would the CMs be willing to take pictures with my camera the way the Photopass guys do?

You could try. :confused3

8) I've been reading about the ruins in Mexico. Is this an excursion or something you go and visit yourself?

I agree with Conny, do it through DCL. Its a long trip. :moped:

9) So are we to go to Home Depot and get the lime green paint chips? Not sure what that means. Someone please let me know what to get. And are we doing the meet at 2:00? I'm presuming that's 2:00 on Saturday the 19th? Where is that meet going to be? Kids included?

I believe the meet is at 2, with kids, paint chips in lime green. Cut the mickey head out, write your name on it, and put it somewhere on you.:grouphug:

10) Speaking of check-in day, how does that all work? Do I take my own bags to my room like I do when I stay at the Pop Century? If not, how long will it take before I get my bags? Should I take a backpack with stuff?

They will bring the luggage for you. Just make sure the luggage tags are on it.;)

11) I know you guys are very much looking forward to the 90 day mark so you can start booking excursions and such. Is there anything good left for us newbies at the 75 day mark?

Last year I booked at the 75 day mark and there were openings. They hold some back. No worries. I would make sure you do it that day though.:surfweb:

12) Someone mentioned that all rooms were category 11 GTY and then clarified that meant Guarantee Category. But what does Guarantee Category mean?

I believe it means you will get a specific catagory, but not a specific room you may want.:confused3

13) The hubby mentioned quite conversationally last night that I needed to get used to the idea of my kids parasailing. I'm guessing we'll do that at Castaway Cay? How much does it cost? Age limit?

You can find this info on the DCL website.:surfweb:

14) I'm trying to decide whether or not to get passports. But it's going to be like $400 to get passports for the four of us. I just don't know what to do. Thoughts/comments?

IMHO, get passports. We have always had them for the whole family. You never know when you might need them. Again, just my thoughts.:wave2:

Sorry for all the questions, but I really don't know what I'm doing. I'm spending every free minute I get online looking for information, but I have sooooo many questions. I hope you guys will be patient with me. Thanks a billion!!!!

I hope this helps.

As long as you are paid in full you should be able to go online and book everything.

Antoinette:grouphug:

It sure did!!!! I feel like such a newb with so many questions, but I guess that's exactly what I am.

First off, we decided this morning to go ahead and bite the bullet and get the passports. The thing that finally made up my mind was thinking that there might be someone at the cruise check-in desk that was confused by all the back and forth that the government is doing on this. The very LAST thing I want is to be turned away at the boat after packing, driving 4 hours, and getting all hyped up about the trip.

There is plenty of food to be had at any time of day. Pizza, hot dogs, burgers, chicken tenders, french fries, wraps, ice cream, etc. All free of charge. The soda station is free also, but I do believe that is the ony free soda besides when you are at dinner

Okay, so I can tell the kids that they can have all they want to eat but they have to drink water or go to the soda station. Got it.

Although I drank plenty, I usually get the drink of the day and dont think about cost. It's vacation.

Yeah, I saw that Drink of the Day notation on the Navigators I was reading. What exactly is that? Is it a special price or just a suggested drink for the day or something?

They will bring the luggage for you. Just make sure the luggage tags are on it

Any idea how long it usually takes to get your luggage? Just trying to figure out how much to put in a pack.

Thanks again to everyone!!!! I really do have a million questions since I've never cruised before. And I guess everyone's right when they say I have a bit of a Type A (type triple A!) personality. But I figure the more information I have ahead of time, the better I can help my family plan and the more fun it will be.

Can't wait to meet all you guys!!!

Hypermommy,
I am glad you are getting passports. :thumbsup2

If your kids drink lots of soda, bring a big refillable cup with straw and they wont have to run to deck 9 to refill so much. They have cups and lids there, but they are not "giant".

The drinks of the day are usually specially priced. On Castaway Cay they were BOGO, so we ordered 4.

Also, if you go to the Captains reception, which is Thursday I think (maybe Monday), drinks are free. It is for everyone, and it is the only time you will be offered complimentary cocktails. We really took advantage of that. :rolleyes1

Luggage usually arrives around 2 or 3pm. It may come in drips and drabs, or all at once. We all wore our bathing suits under our clothes so we wouldnt have to change, or make the kids wait to go in the pool.:yay: You really dont have to carry much onboard with you. Your id's, wallets, camara, sunscreen, etc.

Are you driving down that morning or the day before?

Antoinette

Yeah, me too. :scared1: on the cost, but :dancer: on the fact that we won't get turned away at the boat.

Excellent idea. Big cups for soda... a soft sided cooler with beer.... wow, I'm really amazed at what you're allowed to bring!!

:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Even more :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

Are you driving down that morning or the day before?

Not sure yet. If I drive down the day before I wouldn't leave Tallahassee until about 5:30 or 6:00 so that would put me in around 11:00'ish. I'm currently leaning towards just leaving really early the day of and heading down that way. But on the other hand, if I get in the night before I could sleep in and be really rested up for the cruise. But on the other hand, it's not like I'm going to get much sleep anyway the night before. I'll be too much like a little kid at Christmas. But on the other hand.... wait.. I sound too much like Tevya, don't I?

Thanks a billion for everyone's patience. I think I figured out some key phrases to use with the search function on the board here so I'm going to go search for other threads to answer some of my newbie'est questions. But y'all have been very sweet about answering all my dumb questions and I appreciate it.

Oh, anyone know if I really screwed up the latest copy of the spreadsheet? I'm hoping the one I messed up was an earlier copy that no one was looking at anymore. I think it was Joan doing the spreadsheet (I'm horrible with names)? Anyone know where she may have put the latest one? I just want to download a copy so I can sort it and let the kids know what other kids their age are going to be there.

BTW, speaking of names.... my actual name is Denise, but Hypermommy is just fine (it's the name I gave myself) because it's much more indicative of who I actually am :lmao:

Thanks again for all the help. Exactly 3 month and 3 weeks today!!!!!

I think I messed up the spreadsheet. Wow... ain't this a grand way to introduce myself to the group :rolleyes1

is there 2 spread sheets now??? i am on one of the 1st ones that joan has done but not on this one.....

Sorry everyone but I have topost a quick rant:confused: :scared1:
Marion(from the other German Couple, who will be with us on the cruise)just called me withpanic in her voice.
The Airline just called them to tell that our flight on the 16 is cancelled."CANCELLED?????"
Are they kidding me?:confused3
It is their first flight to the USA and she had no idea what to do.And nobody called me!
After a deep breath I called Lufthansa and they finally offered to fly us one day earlier.:rolleyes1
That means one more night at the Florida Mall Hotel for "shopping" :cloud9: .
But I will send them a letter after the trip with the receipt for the Extra night and hope that they will pay me back.
Same thing happened last time with British Airways and they paid me back.
Ok,now I have that off my chest I feel better. Thanks for letting me rant.

Happy new year to all of you
Conny:flower3:

It's more than likely related to the way I messed it up. I tried to do a search to find if there was more than one spreadsheet because I thought I saw a link to a different one at some point that included more information than the one I messed up. My guess is that the one with more info (more columns) is the one you are on and that the one I messed up was older. At least that's my hope. I guess we won't know for sure until Joan gets on again.

Ahoy mateys,

Do we have a nickname for this cruise? I've noticed that some of the cruise meet threads have given their cruises nicknames. I thought if we had one for this cruise that I might try my hand at a graphic "logo" and then share it with the group so everyone can make it one of their door magnets. That is, unless someone's already done that.... don't want to step on anyone's toes. Just trying to be helpful.

Backgammon anyone?

My DH loves to play backgammon. Do they have sets available for use or should we bring our own? Thanks.
