Applying for SSI Social Security - UPDATE post 8

We have to go to Social Security tomorrow to apply for SSI for our son. Of all days, I have to go in the attic today to get some of the paperwork we need to bring - his IEP's from school are in there with his other school work. I did find his SS card, his birth certificate, and one Dr. report in our filing cabinet, so that was a success. Now I have more hunting go do later.

Well, we made it through. It was not as stressful as I thought and the man who processed our claim was very nice and helpful. I don't know if it will get approved or not and it can take from 2 to 4 months to find out, but at least
we are trying.

Well, today was our appointment at the doctor's office that the SS office sent us to. They did a 20 minutes exam which was mostly psychological. Some math problems, some memory questions, some puzzles, things like that. Now we'll have to wait and see what happens. Not sure how all of that will determine if he qualifies - hopefully they will look into his school records too.

Good luck to you guys! I am going through the process of getting my son with autism a medicaid waiver in Kentucky and it has been a pretty traumatic experience. My heart goes out to your son.

**Update**-we just received confirmation that DS's Medicaid Waiver was approved! Thank goodness! It took almost 4 months for the process to be completed.

Well, I think the ball is rolling in our favor - at least it appears so. We received a letter asking us to come in later this month because they want my son to have a "Representative Payee" to help manage his benefits. That sounds like he's been approved, doesn't it? The letter didn't come right out and say he was approved, but it sure alludes to that.
What do you think? Think he's approved?

It sounds like he has been approved. They approve kids quickly. Either they qualify or they dont. Its very simple.

I hope that it all goes smoothly too - we go this Friday afternoon. I'm not sure how long it will take once it is approved. By the way, my ds is not a child - he's 20, so it's not all cut and dry.
I am more or less updating this thread in case anyone else does a search for SSI because I didn't find much on here or on any other websites before we applied and the information I did find was all about what to do when your claim was rejected. They said 75% of claims get denied the first time. All cases are different but I'm hoping that by sharing our experience, which so far has been going along pretty smoothly, it might encourage others to apply who hesitated for one reason or another.

Yes, he has been if approved if they are wanting to have a Rep Payee for him. They should be able to tell you the effective date of his approval. He will get a backpayment that will have to be spent before a specific amount of time has elapsed (6 months?). For SSI the backpayment should go back to the date he originally applied.
