Apple vs PC

I switched cold turkey back in 2004 and my DH switched fully in 2005 and never had any issues.

Apple's phone support is from the US and you can go to any Apple store and talk with their Genius' and they can usually troubleshoot right then and there for free. If you're out of warranty, they will still fidget with the computer/iPod. They charge once they figure something is wrong and have to send it away or something.

No blue screen of death. The "i" programs work flawlessly together. You import the photo to iPhoto, can add it to an iMovie, add your music from iTunes to iMovie and no extra steps.

And, I know you didn't ask, but the built in Webcams using iChat are far more superior than the PC version. DH has a Macbook in Iraq and I have my own back here. Our video chats do not need to "refresh" and both of us can have them on AND hear each other. All the other guys over there have to turn the mics off or the picture refreshs about every 15-30 seconds.

Mac'ies! Apple Heads (whatever you are called):lmao:

Mac are just a sweet mystery to me. I never even seen one in action!...and I have been in the IT field for 29 years!:scared1: :scared1: :scared1:

I have one big question....What do Mac's do that Windows PC can't?

Here is what I do know, Mac's are much nicer looking:thumbsup2 , more expensive:eek: and less software choices:guilty: .

I honestly have noooooooooo problems with Windows & PC's...never even had a virus!:cool1:

OS X is just a different, better OS than Windows. it's more powerful while staying more simple to use at the same time. things just work in OS X the way you expect them to. and Macs don't come with bloated hard drives filled with crapware you'll never use, that eat up system resources.

as far as software, the only area Macs are lacking behind PC's are games. foe every Windows app, there's one for a Mac as well. and they're usually more simple and more satisfying to use.

if you have iTunes, you're seeing a glimpse into the iLife suite and how OS X works.

I'm with ya. Been working on PCs since there were PCs. I've never had a virus problem (fixed them for others, but never personally), never had problems with configuration, errors, anything really.

As for software, I've used Macs in a professional environment and I don't find them easier to use, just different. PCs are very customizable in a lot of respects, but many people don't know enough to take advantage of those features.

I've used both and I prefer PCs. Not that Macs are substantard, IMO... they're a solid computer and I'm glad to have choices around. Given the knowledge that I have, PCs are a more versatile choice. For someone not comfortable with delving too much into things, I could see where a Mac might be better suited.

Bottom line, try them both out in stores and go what you like best -- not what anyone here says ;)

I was skeptical of Apple until my PC crashed (for the 2nd time) and I was forced to use my daughters Mac Mini for a while. I was hooked! I will never go back to a PC. I LOVE my mac!!

I'm a new Mac user as well and I love it. Have had my MacBook for 2 months already.

we have always had pc's but when my sister went to college last year she decided to get a mac, she loves it, and when my Mom had to get a laptop she convinced my Mom to do the same. My Mom hates it. She has had so much trouble figuring it out, plus problems with her website for work as certain things she can't get to work with the mac. I have a DELL and have never had a problem with it.

I've been building, tweaking, and fixing PC's since DOS 5. not everyone that switches is looking for a dumbed down alternative to Windows. ;)

Another diehard Mac user here. The only negative thing I can say about my Mac is that I regret buying it from eBay. It had some problems when I received it, but Apple's customer support was top-notch, and the problems have been resolved. Plus, every time I called the support line I heard a different song. :lmao:

No Apple Stores anywhere near me!:guilty:

All I know is that I am using my $429 Compaq Laptop using Vista! It is doing everything I want!

Maybe I should want more?:confused3 :confused3

As a personal computer the Mac's do some, it not most, things better than PC's. Even at my work the advertising department uses Mac's. However the PC is so common in the business world that Mac probably will not make gains on Windows. Open Source OS like Linux has better chances there than Mac's. At home use what you like better. I personally use a PC because I actually write programs (and play games of course). I need my programs to run in Windows and I like the selection of games.

I am sticking with Windows. I have had Dell's, a Gateway and other models and really did not have a problem with them. Not that I am a big fan of Microsoft but I am staying with the mainstream. I think Mac's would have as much of a security issue if there were more of them. Hackers go after the systems that will propagate their virus's faster.

But to anyone that likes the Mac I say you should use what you like to get the job done.

Could that be because you run virus protection? I've never had to do that on my 8 year old mac.

Why is that such a big deal?

For some people, Macs are not intuitive. That is potentially a much bigger deal.

Apple sends out security updates for OS X as well and there are holes a virus could be written for. Leopard is coming out in October, so I'm sure the OS will be even tighter. but there are no executable spyware programs that can run under OS X... zero, nada, zilch.

but whatever floats your boat, people use computers for different things. I've never met a person who switched to a Mac ever want to switch back to Windows.

We decided to switch to a Mac in April 2007 and WE LOVE IT:thumbsup2

Not sure what it is, but there is just something about it, it was like love at first site

Thats what I am talking about!!!!:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Maybe its the 'techy" in me but I need to know WHY the Macs are better?:confused3 :confused3 This is something that I have never been able to have explained to me.:confused3

I agree with the poster above, I rarely ever heard of a MAC person going back to PC. But as I said, I NEVER seen a MAC (other than on their website)...I just dont know why its considered better.

Maybe this is one of those 'gotta be seen" to believe things.:thumbsup2

I must say...the guy in the office next to me has a Iphone....WOW WOW WOW That thing is BEAUTIFUL in design & Technology!

disunc (although you lost me at the UNC part. Blue Devil here!) But, aome things I like much better about Macs than my previous pc's. Keep in mind I am not a techy person, just a mom who uses the computer for regular stuff, email, kids doing things for school, photos, etc. Don't even know the right terms for a lot of things I will probably mention:

I only run the programs I actually use on the Mac. No extra firewalls, no big anti virus programs slowing things down. No need to clear out spy ware types of boogers that seemed to always get picked up on pc. I have not needed to buy any software, other than Office because a Mac plugs in out of the box and just works and comes with all the things I needed. No setting up the new computer to our network, it did it itself. (My Mac is one of the gifted children aparantly ;) )

If something does get hung up, which is quite infrequent, I push the Apple key and can force quit just that item. No shutting down the computer. If I do ever restart, following an update, the Mac is ready again immediately. PC took forever to restart and reload all the programs. With Mac, everything is there and ready to go--fast.

My kids can make dvd movies very easily from our video camera. No new software required. They plug the camera in, grab some music from itunes, edit and burn a dvd movie of a family vacation in no time flat. Great editing features available to make very professional looking things for school.

Everything works together. I can drag and drop a photo into email, or an email into something else. I can take a quick photo in the photobooth and one click send it to my family without ever getting out of the chair.

PC's can do all that, I'm sure, but even with trying to get music onto an mp3 player seemed a chore. I never figured out how to get a song from one place to another, then on to the player. I got an ipod, the mac, and everything really just works.

I'm sure you were hoping for responses related to how operating systems worked, the technical aspects, or speed and programming kinds of questions. Those, I can't help with. But I do know that the Mac is a lot more stable than any PC I've had, I can call Apple and not talk to someone in India, and they always answer my question right out of the gate. I don't need to call much because everything is so easy and there is a help button at the top that will help on the specific item you are on at the time-no searching for answers through layers of files.

You've 'met' me on another thread. I had an Imac that I hated. And my brother thinks his Mac Probook is a piece of crap.

I think the best advice on this thread is to go to a store and test drive Macs and PCs to see what you like best.

Why is that such a big deal?

Why is it a big deal? Because it's one less thing you have to buy, one less thing you have to run, one less thing to slow your computer down. Viruses don't even enter my mind- I don't have to think about them. While it is true that virus writers tend to write for the masses (pc's), it's also true that it's incredibly difficult to write a virus for OS X- security is just great.

Of course you are free to like what you like, but you really should try a mac. Will there be a learning curve? Of course, because it isn't a pc, which is what you are used to. It's different and although it's intuitive, you still have to learn how things work. Once you do, it makes sense.

Where do you live that you "never seen a mac"? It's a 'gotta be tried' to believe thing. My entire family mocked me and dh for going mac 8 years ago. We're still on the same computer, they are all on their second in that same amount of time, with many viruses, motherboard breakdowns, and other repairs. Ours just works. Guess who has switched to macs- almost my ENTIRE family! They changed their minds because they have tried them, and love them. They like the fact that they tend to be much more trouble-free than their pc's were.
