Do you use an app to track the location of your family members (or at least the location of their phones)?

Which one do you recommend?

Android only please.

According to this article on Wikihow.com, you can spend money to get the feature for the phones on your plan from the following companies:

AT&T – FamilyMap $10/month
Sprint – Family Locator $5/month
T-Mobile – FamilyWhere $10/month
Verizon – Family Locator $10/month

We do! We use one called Life360 app. It is free on google store. With three teens ....two of whom always seem to "lose" their phones, it has been great.

You do have to have data or wifi working so the GPS can search.

Hope this helps!

We used the Verizon Family Locator one when DS was going through a bad patch when he was 17 or so. Our agreement was that if we called/texted him, he had X minutes to get back to us, or we'd "ding" his phone to check and see if he was where he said he was going. He would get a text saying that his location had been dinged, so it was never a surprise. We only had to do it to him two or three times, and he learned to answer our calls. He also knew that if he ever tried to "ditch" his phone, he would lose all his privileges.

Not a choice we made easily, and he felt degraded, but his behavior improved quickly...

Terri

PS It did not work extremely well in rural areas (we never told DS that) so don't expect a precise measurement in all areas. It always told us what cell tower range he was in, though, so at least we had a X mile radius to work from...

We have iPhones, but the app DH and I use is Find My Friends - I'm sure there's an equivalent for Android.

I'm always surprised at the visceral reaction that my friends (and some of the PP) have when I tell them DH can track my phone. They seem to think it's some sort of invasion of privacy, but honestly it's a huge convenience for us. I use it mostly to figure out when he's getting home from work so we're not waiting around and letting dinner get cold, and it saves me from making a phone call and him talking on the phone while driving (I don't like to do that even with Bluetooth). Last weekend when I was out at a coworker's 40th birthday party I felt like I didn't have to call to tell him I'd be home late because I knew he could figure out where I was if he wanted to. And when he travels for work I can tell if he's in a factory working (where he can't call me) or if he's available to take a call.

And honestly, neither of us sneak around so I can't think of any reason that we wouldn't want the other one to know where we are. I do ask him not to track me sometimes at Christmas when I'm going somewhere to buy him a present (the bike shop, especially), but that's about it.

I think that is the same at life360, which I've tried many times, but it's glitchy for me (stops working). I loved it with the kids, because they're always coming and going, and I could see when they would be arriving. DH only has a work phone, but I'd love it for him (he can't even text). A lot of the time I just want his ETA, but he uses it a lot with clients, so he can't answer. Last night, dd13 was calling from dance, wondering where DH was (supposed to pick everyone up - he was still chatting at the soccer field).

When 360 worked, it was great - my kids liked to be able to track me, too!

Someone stole my Galaxy so my sister gave me her Iphone 3 to use in the meantime. Since it was hers originally, she had an app called Find My Phone that tracked ME!!

It gave me an alarm warning but it's kind of creepy to have someone track you.:crazy2: Even if it's just my sister.

We also use Find My Friends, and there is an Android version.

We don't use it to stalk each other. Though, people often have a viscerally negative reaction when they find out about it :confused3. I use it mostly to see when he is getting home. I don't want to call/text and interrupt him at work to see if he got out on time, I can just look and see if he's on his way home. It's very helpful for timing dinner.

He mostly uses it to see that I'm getting home safely if I'm out late. He'll just check the app around the time I've told him I'm going to head home and he just makes sure my dot is moving (in the right direction, of course). He'll also use it to do sweet things like check when I'm home from the grocery store to help bring the groceries up, and he's also greeted me with an umbrella during a downpour by using the app.

I know someone who sells vehicle tracking devices-many companies with Fleet trucks use them

Now Parent of teens use them on the kid's car-you can see their speed and where they are:rolleyes1

i dont track my family members but 2 of my other friends share locations in Google+. Its cross platforms since im on iPhone, they are both on android.

Double yuck. We have the Find My I Phone app on my teens phone (and mine) just in case its lost or stolen but nope, not for "stalking" purposes. When my husband walks in the door I know he's home.

Unapologetically, we have Find My Phone for all our Apple devices. Yes, originally the intention was to track along with DS if we felt the need. In practise we've actually used it WAY more times to find where DH has left his iPad...:rotfl:

for Android -- Lookout.com is a great tool -- it's $30 for a year on 3 devices -- but adds features such as emailing a picture and it's gps co-ordinates when it is powered off or sim card is removed -- can be "dinged" on ANY web browser --and it is accurate within 30 feet (10 m).

it also cannot be turned off or uninstalled without a full wipe ..

and when you "scream" it to find it when lost -- you CAN HEAR IT.. DW screaed at me once when i was at a club --- and while i couldnt hear my phone ring -- i heard the scream!!!

Not tracking really, but DH and I use FourSquare to check in when we are places and just want to let the other know our location. Then we can update each other but not seem stalker-ish. ;)
