On July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module named Eagle, carrying two Astronauts, touched down onto the surface of the Moon, at the Sea of Tranquility .
Hours later, Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong was the first human to set foot onto the lunar surface.
Lunar Module Pilot Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin followed soon thereafter.
While his fellow Astronauts were exploring the lunar surface, Command Module Pilot Michael Collins orbited the Moon in the Command Module, named Columbia.

Hard to forget this, I was born 4 days after this. My mom keeps telling me that they brought me back from the moon. :)

I'm watching a show on the History Channel about the space program, and the Apollo landings right now.

and things haven't been the same since

:rotfl: :rotfl:

I remember this like it was yesterday.

My father was on the Apollo launch team @ Kennedy Space Center, so we had a front row seat for the Saturn 5 launch.

I just never thought it would be 35 yeasr later & we have not returned.

Sad...........................

I wish we would go back.

I was showing DS these pictures, and he said ....

Hey, I bet that "Buzz" is for Buzz lightyear.

so what do you think, was Buzz Aldrin the inspiration for Buzz lightyear???

Thanks for the wonderful memories, Mark. I recall, vividly, Marie and I, standing out in front of her folk's house (we were dating then) and looking up at the moon, in awe, commenting how unbelievable it was that men were actually on and orbiting the moon. What an achievement!! And yes, we should go back.

I was 10 when we landed on the moon for the first time. I remember I was playing outside and my mom called me in to watch the landing on TV. I wanted to still play outside but my mom said was something I should watch. Of course now I'm glad she "forced" me to watch the moon landing. I still get chills when I think about it.

My kids have no idea how thrilling it was to watch the astronauts blast off into space, land on the moon, and then return to a splashdown in the ocean.

Thanks for sharing this.

I was four when man first walked on the moon, and I accidentally drove my first car down the driveway, through the chainlink fence, into the front of our garage. My parents were so engrossed in watching the T.V., they did not notice that my dolls and I decided to pretend drive "Daddy's New Car". How could I have know that if you pull the emergency break the car would actually move? Thank goodness for being "Daddy's Little Girl".
After a big kiss and a big hug, Dad propped the fence up, and took me inside to sit in his lap to finish watching the moonwalk.
A memory that my parents will never let me forget.

That's one of the best memories I have from my childhood. I had just turned six, we were living in Virginia at the time, and I was playing outside with my friends when my Dad called me in to watch it. I remember it like it was yesterday (well, maybe last week).

I was almost 10.

We were on vacation, going to -- where else? Florida.

We were in a Holiday Inn. I remember Dad with the TV on, late into the night. A flickering black and white. Mom, my sis, and I had fallen sleep already, and I remember Dad waking us up to see a man walking on the moon. It must have been around 2 am. An incredible sight for a 9 year old girl who loved science and still believed that anything was possible -- including walking on the moon.

"One small step for man; one giant leap for mankind."

Well, being born in 1972, I never really had a chance to see the lunar landings live, but, I do have a lot of Apollo 11 books and magazines. In fact, since my older brother was only a few months old at the time, I remember my mom telling me that she had him on her lap while watching the lunar landing on TV!!!

By the way, PRINCESS VIJA, your son got it right!!! Buzz Lightyear did get his first name from "Buzz" Aldrin, the second man to set foot on the moon!!! Neat bit of Disney trivia, huh?!? :teeth: :hyper: Just thought I'd let you know!!!

Oh, one other thing. I still have the New York Times newspaper commerating the event back in 1969. Do any of you? Just curious.

Thanks Buzzlvr31,
That was really fun to find out! I had no idea. I told DS this morning and he thought it was pretty cool he guessed right!!!::yes::

I was 11 at the time (Dan, you're OLD!). It was quite an achievement and hopefully they'll get there again. Maybe even Mars in my lifetime.

But sadly, there are goofballs who believe it was an elaborate hoax.

Idiots.
