So we will be at Universal arriving late Saturday night Nov 24th through Saturday December 1st. Going back and forth on our tickets choices and thought i would ask all of you wonderful people for advice.
We will be spending five days in the parks. If the same pattern holds from last year our first park day Sunday 11/25 will be Mannheim Steamroller concert so if we get AP we will be blocked from US. Not a huge deal but it’s our first day so i don’t really want to be limited. So I thought we should get the 2 park 2 day promo tickets with 2 free days and then upgrade at some point. Is this a waste of time? Is being blocked our first day worth the time and hassle it MIGHT take to upgrade tickets? I’m a planner and i I kind of want my AP in hand before I been get there but I don’t want to be blocked out our first day. Also, if I buy through undercover tourist I will save about $25 but I’m worried that might complicate upgrading to the AP?
Which would you do
1. Buy seasonal AP and deal with being blocked first and last day(last day we will only be in the park for the afternoon)
2. Buy promo tickets from Universal and then upgrade
3. Buy promo tickets from Undercover and then upgrade

I upgraded a 3 day ticket (bought from UT as a 2+1) to a seasonal AP a couple of years ago at Guest services inside US and it did not take long at all. I recently received my 2+2 tickets from UT and they are 4 day tickets (don't say 2+2 or promo anywhere on them), so should be able to be upgraded.

I'm a bit disappointed as I did not return DH's 3 day for the 4 day when the promo came out because he is intending to upgrade his to an AP and I was concerned about being able to upgrade them, but it looks just like a regular 4 day ticket. (I had returned some of my original ticket order to UT but not the whole thing.) I guess I still could exchange it if UT will let me.

Update - I did return the remaining 3 day tickets of my original order for the promo tickets, and this time the replacements DID come with Promo and blackout dates listed on the ticket. Interesting. I'll have to make sure to give DH one of the first set don't say promo on them so he can upgrade it.

I would buy normal tickets and upgrade. It will avoid your block out issues and not cost you anything extra. Is is simple to upgrade tickets from UT. Just make sure you don't upgrade until the blocked out day has passed.

Ok thanks everyone. Can I upgrade to an AP atthe RPR ticket desk (once I’ve used the tickets) or does it have to be in the park?

People have done at at the ticket desk, but I wouldn't guarantee you that all ticket agents at the hotels do it.
