We bought 4 day passes in late April for our July trip.
We decided to turn them into APs since we knew we'd be returning for another long stay or two this year. We upgraded them at the park on 7/3 and noticed afterwards that the expiration date is late April (when the original 4 day pass was purchased, but not used). Is this normal?

No, it should be one year from the date you first entered the park. We did the exact same thing last year. We bought a 10 day pass, think we bought it in March or so. Our first day in the parks was July 3rd. Somewhere around July 10th, we upgraded to AP. Our dates were July 3, 2015 to July 3, 2016
