Anything to be done for the future?

I just came back from Disney, and I had a great time. The only thing I didn't think of, it gets pretty dark in some of those ride lines (Universal also has dark lines). I didn't realize just how bad my dark light vision is until I was there. I always knew it wasn't the greatest, but I live in a city where it's not a problem.

I really don't like waiting on a line where I can't see anything, can't see where the stairs are, or where hte wall is, for instance. I walked into a chain several times because it was dark and I couldn't see it. If I were to go back to Disney or Universal in the future, would there be anything I can do to avoid the lines that are dark or dim lit? I don't want not going on the rides to be the only option, because that takes away some of the best rides, and if I have to, I'll walk into walls to get on them, but I would prefer not to.

Have you talked to an eye doctor recently? It sounds as if you may be developing cataracts. This can be taken care of fairly easily.

It's actually funny you mention that, because I actually have inborn cataracts, but it was never a problem before because they're really tiny. I went to the eye doctor back in May-ish, and they were the same size they've always been, but I guess it's not out of the realm of possibility that they're getting worse. Or, I just never noticed it before because living in NY, you never really find yourself in darkness. I just wouldn't want to go through a surgery if it's not changing and not a problem in my everday life.

I carry a mini flashlight with me for emergencies. As long as you don't shine it in anyone's face, you shouldn't have a problem. In fact, our waitress at the Mexican restaurant in EPCOT was very appreciative for the use of my flashlight to sort our dinner checks.

I have dark line and attraction problems with my dad. His vision in dark places is really poor.

In MK for the Haunted Mansion we enter at the exit and go directly to the conveyor belt to the doom buggies. He misses the stretching room but at least he can still do part of the attraction. He does complain that he feels like he misses a lot of the attraction also.

We have tried to use the special entrance for Pirates but the wait was so much longer and in the hot sun so that didn't work well for my mom.:rotfl: :confused3

In EPCOT we enter the Seas the same way. We go in the exit and get on the clam shells there. Another time we had a CM with a flash light help him through the back part of the regular line (we ended up in the exit cue for Turtle Talk) but they suggested that we just use the exit next time.

We have not found a comfortable way to do Bugs life in AK.

I agree w/ use of a small penlight (my kids both need them, and they shine them toward the floor so they don't bother others.) At some places, an alternate entrance w/ the different queue structure may be helpful, I would add, that we have to use the exit at HM b/c of two of us on ECV's. Although we go in the exit, they always take us down the hall on the left to the stretch room, so ask if you can still do that part (it's my favorite part of the ride.) Oh, also, you're more likely to have difficulties when there are stairs involved if you can't see them. You can get a stamp on your GAC so that you don't have to do stairs (there's usually a way to go around/under, elevator, etc.) That would probably make it much safer and more comfortable for you.

The idea of having a small flashlight, maybe an LED key-chain light, is a good one. If you put it on a clip, it could be attached to a bag or belt-loop, for easy access. Also, where possible, you can keep one hand on the rope dividers at all times, to lead you through the queue; it may take a little longer to get around all the corners, and you may end up accidentally holding hands with strangers , but at least you won't hurt yourself!

Might be good to get your eyes checked out, especially if you've not had problems with the lighting in these attractions before (if you've been to Disney before, that is), just to be on the safe side. Hope it all checks out fine and dandy! :thumbsup2

Thanks for the suggestions, I think next time I go, I'll bring a small keychain flashlight thing, seems like a good idea. I tried holding the railing, but on a lot of the lines, they had chains up so you didn't have to go the entire way around, and so there's basically a drop in the rail, during which I would go straight and hit the chain.

Last time I was at Disney, I was around 10, so I don't remember if I had problems then. Now that I'm home, I'll see how it is here, if it's worse I'll get it checked out, if not, then probably nothing has changed.
