Anyone work seasonal retail for the holidays?

DD worked at CFA in high school and enjoyed it. They were very good about scheduling the kids around their school work. One girl only worked Fri and Sat. Even when she left for college she was able to pull a few shifts over Christmas break.

If you have a Chik fil A, I think they'll go as low as 15. It's not retail, but it's work.

Thank you both. He did apply there last year but maybe with more shoppers in the area they'll need seasonal help.

I was set up for the interview Friday evening - a problem with the application the store could not open it so they had to cancel the interview. I had to email macy's - they seem very unorganized - anyway they said i would be getting a phone interview. Got a message today from someone i could not even understand. Anyway finally got thru to someone - they gave me an interview over the phone and offered me the seasonal job.

I have to go in two weeks for the training...people think i'm crazy to do this for 8.00 an hour...but hey some extra money - you never know the connections you can make..

thanks for all the feed back!

Ds17 has been looking for a PT job for a while now. There's so much competition and at many places, Kohls being one, you have to be 18.
Does anyone know of stores that will hire at 17? I know Target will and they were hiring over the summer for their food court but never called him back.
How about Macy's or B&N?

Our town is a shopping mecca and wherever he works will be like feeding time at the zoo but hopefully if he gets a foot in door it might lead to something more permanent.

I think Wegman's hires at 15.

Congrats Hon:banana:
You are right some money is better than no money and I think the connections you will make will go along way.
Have fun

Kohl's hires at 17. Unless it's different in your state for some reason

At least around here Wegmans stopped hiring at 15 years ago. The year after I told DD now 21 to take another year before joining the work force.

Lisa good luck to you. When I started as seasonal it was under a similar situation. I remember the first seasonal job I interviewed for was a group interview, one of the other woman interviewing said that "it is only for 3 months I can do anything for 3 months". In the end you will have experience, your kids will have an extra present and you will have a little more to help you through this time.

Thanks, but ours is definitely 18. We have a friend's daughter that works there who offered to help him out but we'll have to wait until Jan. or hopefully he finds something else in the meantime.

I went into old navy this weekend and some guy was at the door asking people if they would like to apply for seasonal work. He said they hire at 16.

I did ask at customer service but it cant hurt to ask again. Maybe they'll go for 17 for Seasonal help.
Thanks!

I work for Kohl's. We have a couple of people who are only 17. Don't ask. Just have him apply online. If his availability is reasonable he stands a decent chance

I do for Kohl's.
The thing I hate the most is the one day of training-sitting in front of a computer and watching 6-8 hours of demo situations. You can't cheat, because there is a test to take after each one. It is pretty much common sense and I just go take the test at the end of each one vs. trying to watch the boring thing. Some of my friends told me, you can't skip ahead anymore, you have to watch each segment.

At Kohl's, you can pretty much pick your days and shift. Surprising enough, they only ask for volunteer-workers on Thanksgiving and Black Friday and they always have enough workers. I don't mind on Black Friday, it keeps me from shopping.

That's funny I worked for Kohl's last Christmas season and I got no training and no one could take off on Black Friday. It must be store dependent

Honestly, my favorite place I worked retail was Bath and Body Works, they paid well, they were great to their employees and they are REALLY low pressure sales. I had just come out of tech sales which was such high pressure I loved the break.

Good luck!

I had to laugh at this. I worked at Bed Bath & Beyond off and on over 2 years and it was HARD! Extremely physical moving the stock, top stocking, etc. Had to drag huge ladders around the store all the time. They expected us (and gave us pop up training and quizzes) on selling all sorts of products. We were supposed to be experts on our areas and everything in it. Then add that they constantly moved things around and covered every square inch of the store with merchandise, it was a nightmare. They did pay very well for retail though...I started at $10.50 an hour, but it was HARD and exhausting work.

What I found in retail though is that if you are pleasant, have a good demenor with the customers and can keep yourself constantly busy, you can either advance or have your pick of shifts/positions. I had very specific times that I could work (that broke a lot of their policies) and they always gave me what I wanted. Over any other job I have ever had, I have found retail really did value a good employee, I guess because the talent pool is so varied and the turnover was so high.

Oh my goodness, you are right. I work PT at a Hallmark store. Full boxes of cards are heavy. We have a stockroom with ladders that don't reach the top shelves, so people literally climb the shelves. Over the summer, I slipped coming off the ladder and broke a bone in my foot. So my PT job then affected my FT job because I was supposed to be off of it for 6 weeks. Long story/short, I went back to FT job in 3 weeks, because I don't have to stand for long hours, went back to Hallmark in 6 weeks. Retail, moving stock, is hard work. I am considering giving it up after the current holiday season.

I have family that have worked retail and are still working retail....why must people cuss and be so rude....the workers are just following the rules....
I believe in standing up for myself if a product is inferior but i refuse to take it out on the person who is working..
Call customer service or ask for a manager...

OMG - did my training at Macy's - talk about boring - 2 nights 4 hours each night sitting in front of a computer that "trains" you....

I have my first shift on Saturday afternoon so will see how it goes -
