Anyone watching Swingtown?

Aw, Bicker! Every time I see you in a television series discussion, you're the bearer of bad news.
It's a little like the trip planning boards: People mention the good and the bad, but it so much easier to remember the bad.

If majorly you're into television, I usually start a thread about a month or so before the season begins to talk about the premieres... Keep an eye out.

(Here's the one from this summer... )

Interesting. He remembers TV in the bedrooms being more of a thing than TVs in the kitchen-- same with all his friends/family. Maybe it's either a generational or location thing.

Who knows? Midwesterner here.
A lot of my friends/family also had carpeted kitchens (GAH!) back then, too.
My parents still have carpet in their bathrooms--we're trying to get them to change it before they sell the house. They still have the basement/rec room complete with glass beads hanging from the ceiling and barrel chairs/tables. "Swingtown" could've been filmed in their house!

I watched for the 1st time last week. I loved it! Do you think it meant that the 3 women did more than sleep? Or was Janet just upset because she woke up with the other 2? I hope this isn't like the series Cane last year. I LOVED that show and it was cancelled right in the middle of the story.:sad2:
No...I think she was just horrified waking up to not her DH....and she probably was vaguely remembering her....ahem....swim;)
This better not stop in the middle:eek:
ah, the 70s....

graduated high school in 1975 - remember the clothing very well

swingtown does a good job recreating the look and feel

remember wearing platform shoes - these days, it's tevas for me....

(all those twisted ankles!)
Yes......I loved platforms when they came back in the 90's and my ankles have not recovered.
I'm loving Swingtown. I catch it on demand on Sunday evenings. I think '70s music is the BEST! And I 've got a crush on Roger:love: (though Bruce & Grant Show (Tom?) aren't bad either!

jon
Yes....there all pretty hot.....:hyper:

Gotta love it......it'll make a comeback one day:rolleyes:

The early word on Swingtown was that this burn-off -- a series intended as a mid-season replacement (as announced on May 16, 2007), but it didn't work out (perhaps because of the writers' strike), and so they're just burning the episodes they have (13 episodes) off over the summer (through August 28), and that'll be it.

Of course, if a billion people watch it, they'll probably change their minds, but given the network's perspective regarding the show going into the summer, folks should not get their hopes up. Regardless, it was not picked up for the regular season, nor is it planned as a mid-season replacement for next year.
Here's an update: Swingtown has been moved, from the most lucrative night of television (Thursday) to the second least lucrative night of television (Friday). So things don't look good for Swingtown. It is almost surely gone after its season finale on 9/5/2008.

Also note that it is pre-empted on 8/22/2008 due to NFL pre-season football.

It doesn't really surprise me that it'll be gone soon. I guess the premise couldn't go on forever.

I do think it's a good show. Well written too.

On the cabin night. I think Janet freaked out b/c it was only her and Trina in bed. She was probably worried she did a little too much ;)

So I was sitting around watching last week's episode and did a little math. The daughter is 16 (although she looks way older, imo, and maybe the casting should have been diff) and is just starting to date her teacher. He is finishing grad school and has been offered a real job. That makes him 26 or 27 at the youngest, assuming he doesn't have a dissertation yet or did it way quicker than most people). That doesn't bother me too much. But then when she meets his friends at the ballgame, they ask her if she is grad or under grad. At 16 she wouldn't look anywhere near a grad student and probably look too young to be an undergrad (even a freshman). Yeah, I have a visual issue here.

Could it be that the teacher is just a bachelors graduate and going into graduate school --making him anywhere from 21 to 23 ish?

I don't remember the teacher saying that he is in grad school, but I may have missed that detail.

I thought she was 17, actually, but close enough.

I finished grad school, and was offered a real job, at age 22.

Wow! What did you major in? I was just getting back into school when I was 20. I had decided to do too much during my first few years (min 21 credits) and burned out so I had to take some time off.

I guess I was assuming that he was finishing his doctorate. I forgot that you can teach the basic classes with a masters which could make him easily 21 or 22. I just remember the girl that the daughter was talking to at the ball game saying that he had been offered a job at the college.

Mathematics.

I taught mathematics to college sophomores and juniors, while I was age 21, i.e., my first semester as a graduate student. I even contributed to the development of a text book.

Maybe folks are doing things a lot later in life these days, as compared to when I was in college. :confused3 Or perhaps no one spends summers at college any more, earning extra credits. :confused3

I need to stop finding new shows that I like.....it is the death of it unfortunately:rolleyes:

I'm hoping he is closer to 21. Although they do look cute together.....she did get hit a little by the "homely" stick though.

Wow....bicker....teaching college at 21.....thank god you were not 20 so your students wouldn't have to buy you beer:lmao: :goodvibes
Seriously that must have been tough.

ah, great - another show i liked, ending....

the list goes on: amsterdam, moonlight, jericho, surface....

like i give it the kiss of death or something, by enjoying it.

makes me wonder why all my children is still on the air....

tick tock?

I knew this show wouldn't make it to renewal. Not enough actual swinging, if you ask me, after all of those titilating commercials we saw all spring. I tend to switch between this and Fear Itself (but it looks like I won't have the pleasure of doing that anymore), so maybe I missed some of them getting it on, but my impression is S&B only did it one time, and while T&T have had some dalliances, the screentime for the bedroom action is minimal.

And as far as "eye candy" goes, seeing Grant Show look all old and crows-feeted just doesn't do it for me, though the porn 'stash is hilarious. Bruce doesn't do it for me at all. Roger is kind of cute, Doug looks small and "delicate" but with a sort of big head for his body. Susan looks like a poor man's Sissy Spasek, Trina is gorgeous, and Janet looked good all done up but she ain't gonna stop traffic. That new Melinda girl reminds me of the chicks ont he first year of Facts of Life or the older girl on Little House.

Though this time, it was pretty-much known (by folks who follow the industry closely) that the cancellation of Swingtown was pre-ordained. It was never really even considered for renewal.

Back then, the drinking age was 18. And some of my students were older than me. What was really tough was when some of my suite-mates enrolled in my course.

Not to get OT, but they are raising the minimum ages for kids to start school, so HS graduates tend to be at least 18 in MD now, while I remember my HS class being about 50%/50% between 17 and 18. Schools offer so many advanced placement courses that they are really loathe to skip grades in school as well.
As far as taking extra college courses over the summer, I was more interested in finding jobs/internships to use as post-grad resume builders than taking extra courses. Real experience had become a more valuable marketing point for new grads by the late 1990's b/c so many kids were going to college by then.

Isn't that the norm for grad students? It was where I went to University. Grad Students ran the labs too.

:lmao: Your description of them....cracked me up....IMO Roger is the "hottest" one.....I hope we get to.....ahem....see a little more of him. Maybe they can continue the season on HBO;)
BTW....anyone watch....TELL ME YOU LOVE ME:idea:.....just watched it this week.......we are talking soft porn folks;) I was pretty shocked at first.....then I watched the season in three days:lmao: :rolleyes1

I forgot about Laurie. She is kind of creepy-looking to me. I am sure there were other girls in the class who were smart and not as weird-looking as she is. And it is not like she has a really hot body, either, so I just don't buy the student-teacher romance. The kids are so boring, anyway. At least the boys have been away at camp.

The show itself didn't show that much swinging. Sure it promoted it during the commercials but it really isn't an integral part of the show.

I think the writers are trying to explore the womens liberation movement, women in the workplace and the general changes in society while throwing some swinging in there.

My DH was a teen in 1976 and he said a lot of girls looked like that--minimal makeup, awful middle part, terrible clothes. He calls it "70's pretty"-- which isn't pretty for todays standards but passable for that time period.

I think the intention is showcasing her characters intelligence instead of beauty but not going overboard on the ugly stick with big glasses and worse clothes. If you remember at the softball game the teachers older female friend said that he only dates smart girls-- which in some realms does not exactly equal pretty.

I don't think she is striking, but if you look at her IMDB photo, she looks totally different. She has the skinny body to pull off those string crochet halters.

I am really enjoying this show too. I was hoping it would make it past the summer.

I agree with some of the comments on casting. Roger is the hottest:love: but he shouldn't have been paired w/ janet.
I love Trina too. Susan is OK.
