A friend who shows dogs told my DH to, instead, use some kind of power tool instead. The name escapes me (I don't know or care about tools)....but it essentially does the same thing, but better.
DH has to get on top of them to hold them down. We tried all the tips and advice to get them used to it, but my dogs just don't buy it. There was just another thread about this! These things are pretty popular.
I bought one for my dogs. Their nails have grown out of control. My only problem with it is that I haven't been able to have them tolerate the tool at all, so there's all kinds of drama when we use it. Whining, nipping, flailing...DH has to get on top of them to hold them down. We tried all the tips and advice to get them used to it, but my dogs just don't buy it.
If the nails are long like my dogs', you can't just use it and expect great results. You have to file them down a little bit at a time, so that's what we've been doing.
That's what I've been afraid of. Our Doxie is scared of the clipper; I can't imagine that this would be any better. Heck....this is a nail clipper with a MOTOR! It's like a vacuum and a nail clipper, the 2 things he's most scared of, rolled into 1.
How much do groomers charge for just a nail clipping?

Here is my thread on the question about the peticure, so you can get the pros/cons on both...
