Anyone use a carpet stretcher?

My DS is buying his first home(yeah!), but the carpet in the living room has a "bump" in it from moving an entertainment center. Is a carpet stretcher something relatively easy to use? It's not new carpet and has just that one "bump" and he would rather fix it himself to save some $$$. It's a berber kind of carpet.

We had a friend that does it and it kills your knees. That is about all I know.

I've watched BIL use one before- you have to "kick it" really hard with your knee- it does look like it would hurt. Not sure where you can even get one. BIL used to lay carpet for a living.
