I have found a good deal on Airtran for on our way to Disney and found a good returning flight on SW . Price on both is 69.00 one way. Has anyone used different airlines for making a trip to Disney to save money and for good flight times ?

Not for Disney trips, but have done it plenty of times for business trips. No reason not to do it.

Just out of curiosity....where are you flying from and what time of the year?

Yes we do this all the time. In the past it always seemed cheaper to book a round-trip ticket on the same airline - these days with so many airlines competing for business, it makes sense to book one-way tickets, at the best price you can get! Our last trip we went to MCO on Allegiant for $19.99 & came home on Airtran for $89, this trip I'm going down on Airtran at $59 & coming back on USAir for $128.

In 2009 I flew Southwest to Orlando and AirTran home. Earlier this year I flew AirTran to Orlando, then American to LA and home. I booked two trips for 2011 - both on AirTran to Orlando and Delta home.

Thats cool I have always booked a round trip with the same airline but might do 2 different ones this time. So SW has already bought Airtran ? :thumbsup2

We have done it on multiple trips and am doing it on my upcoming trip; Delta down, SW back. BUT, it's never been based on price, but rather on schedule. Personally, I don't mind paying a few dollars more for a better schedule, i.e. time appropriate layovers, better departure times.

I usually do. This year Im flying out with Airtran ($74) and flying back with Delta ($159)...both non stop. I booked months ago and wouldnt you know Jetblue has lowered their prices AND Airtran has another non stop coming home about 5 minutes within Deltas time. It was the same price, but luggage fees are less on Airtran. Playing the airfare game is a full time job!

Yup. At the end of this month we're flying to Disney on Delta, and home on Jetblue. No biggie at all. :thumbsup2

I nearly always do, no matter where we're flying. Just seems like one airline's times always work a lot better. We're doing the SW/Airtran combo on a trip to Baltimore in a couple weeks. Son is doing Denver/Milwaukee one way on USAir and one Airtran for Thanksgiving and Midwest/Airtran over Christmas. When we fly down to Disney in January we're doing Continental going down and Southwest coming back. Not a lot of airline loyalty I guess - I just look for the cheapest prices and the best times for us! :rotfl:

I had a trip planned from NY to FLA last February (Miami not MCO). I was flying AA down from JFK to MIA on Wed. and SW from FLL to ISP on Sunday. Not only 2 airlines but 4 airports.

However on Wed there was a major snow storm and my flight was canceled. Due to AA having the most ridiculosly restrictive change policies (a different rant) my flight down was canceled and the next availabel flight they offered me was Sunday (I wonder if i would have made it down in time to fly home)

Now SW is a relatively customer friendly airline so they let me cancel my sunday flight for credit. However, most airlines probably would not care that your depature was canceled.

Therfore unless you are in a snow or hurricane season, I think its fine to do. However, if weather will be a potential issue be award of this one potential pitfall.

The upside of the story is that while I did not go to MIA in February, I used my refund from AA, my credit from SW and my give a day voucher to take a bonus WDW trip this year.

We have done this a few times and are doing it this weekend. We fly out of phoenix, az on delta, then we are returning on airtran, never had any problems with this at all.
