Anyone stockpiling food?

Im in Missouri and we just had our 1st confirmed case a couple days ago. I went to Walmart on Saturday (a mistake all on its own) to pick up meds for my kid who had a double ear infection and the flu. They were all out of hand sanitizer, any kind of wipes (bleach Lysol etc) out of the bleach and Lysol sprays. The whole shelf was empty. There was like 2 bottles of regular bleach left. But there was plenty of toilet paper lol

Is that so you can run away from the sick people?
You can always run faster in new sneakers, maybe we should all stock up.

Maybe we need them to run from the zombies. :scared: The few times I've seen zombie movies, people are always running as fast as they can from them. Then always tripping - probably due to being in new sneakers they aren't used to running in. :scratchin :headache:

Even though the zombies are always doing the slow zombie walk, they always catch up. :scared1:

The TP panic started because of a shortage in China. For whatever reason, China was not able to restock paper goods in stores in their major cities for weeks. The story spread across the internet with pictures of empty shelves where paper goods are sold, and folks all over the world started buying paper goods.

Maybe we can take pics of the bad Easter candy no one wants, to get rid of it? All that was still there last night, in plenty supply. :crazy2:

For several weeks my Walmart has been out of masks and almost everything in the cold & flu aisle. Now, that aisle is still empty (unless you want a pain reliever or cough drops). The cleaning aisle is almost wiped out unless you want toilet cleaner. I went there mistakenly looking for Pledge and Swiffer refills ( both dry and wet) and they were gone. All I can think is that people must plan on Spring cleaning if they’re stuck at home😂. Also out of batteries, antibacterial wipes, gloves, humidifiers, Lysol and Distilled water. (among other things). I need a new battery for my glucose meter and distilled water for my CPAP. I am hoping they restock those. But there was plenty of TP last time I checked.

When I went to work yesterday I was telling people “goodbye”. They wanted to know if I got a new job. I told them I didn’t but “Dr. Fauci and other doctors think I’m going to die”. I’m in 2 high risk groups. To some people that isn’t funny but luckily most of the people I work with share my (very) warped sense of humor. Talking to one of those coworkers today I mentioned if I do die I can hear everyone at my funeral saying “she predicted it”. Again, warped. But in reality I have been listening to all medical advice and have gone a little extra in some things. I’ve always been a germaphobe so I have most of that stuff on hand anyway.

As a crafter, now THIS is my type of stockpiling! :lmao:

Los Angeles Times article:

"To assuage coronavirus fears, we need softness and strength. In other words: Toilet paper"

https://webcache.googleusercontent....cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=firefox-b-1-d

Snipped section:
". . . They hadn’t expected Costco to be so jammed. But the crowd soon thinned. Even with a two-package limit, the store sold out of both toilet paper and water in the first hour.
That held a certain kind of irony for [Jennifer] Best. The store can’t keep up with the demand for toilet paper, “but the shelves with the hand-washing soap, they’re still very full,” she said. “What does that tell you?”
It tells me that, in the face of an unpredictable epidemic, toilet paper has become an unlikely totem of order and cleanliness, a way to outlast a dreaded disease and be comfortable as you attend to life’s most basic needs.
Psychologists who study consumers in crisis explain it like this: Uncertainty around the virus drives us into panic mode, and we look for a way to stifle the anxiety that provokes.
We fixate on toilet paper not just for its utilitarian value, but also because accumulating an overload — imagine a tower of toilet paper packages in your garage — provides a reassuring visual cue: You’re equipped for a long quarantine.
As people begin to raid the stores, the contagion feeds on itself. The sight of all those empty toilet paper shelves begins to stoke a new wave of panic in those of us who haven’t loaded up.
Or as London behavioral science professor Dimitrios Tsivrikos cast it for Britain’s Sky News: “If we had an international sign for panic, it would be a traffic warning sign with a toilet paper roll in the middle.”

:lmao:

I could do some needlework with supplies on hand but plan to concentrate on bulk cooking. Sofrito, Chinese dumplings, and stock making are on the agenda for this weekend. I do somethings on the weekend so DGD can learn how to do it on her own someday.

I mentioned up thread I had gotten emails from Target and Best Buy. Just got one from Smith’s/Kroger. In addition to all the reassurances that they have ramped up cleaning they also said employees who are sick or have family members who are sick are asked to stay home. They have a fund for associates directly affected.

My son went to the local WalMart today (Northwest NJ) = no paper goods, no canned goods - NONE

Didn't go there for that stuff, but was stunned at the empty shelves.

That's because your state had it's first death yesterday. Even though you only had a couple confirmed cases the day before. Everyone is now preparing for the Apocalypse. :(

Even with all the confirmed cases in NYS, we still haven't had a death yet. WHEN it happens, we will be more emotionally prepared for it. (Our Governor & Mayor are warning us to expect some deaths.) It won't take us by shock the way your state's death did.

CT has it's 3rd confirmed case today. I saw on the news, some CT health official telling residents to expect some deaths in that state. :(

I legit needed to pick up some TP today as we were running low. Our local grocery store had lots in stock. I have never felt so conspicuous buying TP! I wished I could have had a sign on the front and back of my jacket that said “Really need it! Not stockpiling!”

The shortage does have a perk - it has shortened the time one must spend in the aisle doing “toilet paper math” to figure out what’s the best deal - just grab what’s available and go!

I got ONE package a couple of days ago because we needed it and I just knew everyone was judging me, LOL. The lady in front of me felt the need to tell the clerk that she wasn't stockpiling.

I went to Target today to pick up a prescription. The clerk told me that people rushed the door first thing this morning like Black Friday.

We went to the vein doctor today for my husband and they have to hide the hand sanitizers in the rooms because patients are stealing them. The clerk at Target told me that her dad was a doctor and the STAFF is stealing them from him.

It's getting crazy folks.

Well Massachusetts is now up to 108 cases and stores are ramping up. I have to stay I did stock up on stuff in the event businesses close and the supply chain gets backed up. At some point even Walmart may have trouble replenishing items.

My husband just went to Walmart to grab some coffee for me. He said the lines were crazy, but what's new. They only have a couple of registers open, as usual. :sad2:

I'm going to run out tomorrow for a few dairy items. We have an abundance of stores here, so I am not worried about finding what I need.

I think we will see more stockpiling now. Ohio amd Maryland just closed all schools K-12. So with kids home, there goes the food budgets.

Jimmy Kimmel showed a speeded up video clip of a toilet paper aisle in Australia, as people flooded in after the store opened, to get toilet paper. :lmao:Fast forward to 2:19 to see it if it doesn't start there. It's funny.

Husband just got home and said the bottled water at Walmart was wiped out. People had carts FULL of it.

Nope, I still do not understand that.
