Anyone stockpiling food?

The NYU Langone medical center where one of my doctors is, sent an email to us saying if you present flu-like symptoms, they only want to talk to you by phone or by a video call via their Virtual Urgent Care app. :scared:

But the elderly, whom are most vulnerable to getting a flu, may also be the ones who don't have a smartphone capable of making video calls like Skype or Facetime or their app. :(
Again, lack of critical thinking. :sad2:

Got my Walmart pick up. As suspected the toilet paper and travel wipes I ordered were out of stock BUT they did have replacements. The TP was my normal brand just not the same type which is fine. The Wet Ones I ordered were travel size 20 per pack and not antibacterial. What I got for a replacement were the little tubs with 48 per pack and antibacterial for the SAME PRICE as the travel packs. I feel like I hit the mother load. 😂 I texted older DD (in Seattle) I had the hookup.

That's the mostly good thing about Walmart's substitutions. Sometimes you hit the jackpot. Glad you were able to get some stuff!

I wanted travel sized stuff myself because we are going to use them on an airplane but we'll make due with the size we got.

Now sometimes Walmart substitutes with something that makes no sense though lol.

Earlier this week we had a grocery pick up order and they must have been out of smaller size Doritos because they gave us the party size when we ordered the smaller size so that was nice.

They'll always charge you the price you initially paid for (unless it's a weight thing) or you won't be charged at all if they can't substitute it or you've selected no substitutions.

I just plan on dividing them up into ziplocks. I had wanted the travel for my kids backpacks so it should be fine.
Yeah, I’m a fan of their substitutes, it usually works in my favor but for sure I’ve had ‘what the heck’ ones.

There are no Walmart's in NYC so it's good old shoe leather or hope that online Amazon or Target can keep you off the street.
Still haven't bought TP but I'm not worried. We have 5-6 rolls, and the tractor trailers are making it into the city so big store inventories are being replenished. Over the weekend, I used the last of my pomegranate molasses and I found a replacement bottle so currently I've no"true" worries;).

The only US people w/ serious replenishment concerns are probably in TN right now.

When I got one of the large canisters from Target, I pulled out several, folded them, cut them in half and tossed them into a Ziplock bag. I don't think I will always need a full size sheet. I can always pull out a second one if need be. But, the canister will last longer now.

Smart!

It does say you can just call them. No need for a fancy phone.

Yes, the elderly might actually prefer the old dinosaur method of contacting their doctor and not having to go in. Just have the doctor prescribe flu meds that they can pick up at their local pharmacy.

I'm curious: Of those of you who have gotten the "regular flu" in the past and did go to the doctor, did you have to get any tests done to prove it was the flu? Or did your doctor just go through all the symptoms, mentally checkmark them all and say, "Yep,
CheckmarkB.png
yep,
CheckmarkB.png
you have the flu. Here's a prescription to have filled."

The number of confirmed cases in NYC is around 149 now. More than the total cases in all of the rest of the U.S. (98-ish are up near Patient #2, the lawyer.) The number of cases here seems to grow exponentially every day. NO deaths reported yet in NY.

Are "regular flu" cases tested & confirmed like this every winter? The news always says how deadly it is each year. And they usually report when there is an actual death. But, they haven't been giving a daily count of all the people who have tested positive for the latest flu.

There were also many suspected cases here that were ruled NOT to be Coronavirus after all. I'm wondering if they just turned out to have the "regular flu"?

The local news here doesn't talk about the "regular flu" anymore. It's like it's been wiped off the planet. Which we know it hasn't been. And no reports of people dying of the "regular flu."

Today's shopping trip revealed a shortage of iceberg lettuce (I'm making tacos). Also, way more 18 count egg cartons than 12-count (both fully stocked, an observation of the distribution), and way more store brand butter.

My shopping trip today ( Kroger) revealed a shortage of absolutely nothing except hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol. Everything else, including TP, cleaning supplies, wipes, etc were all available in normal supply.

To answer your question. My husband was diagnosed with the regular flu once, a few years ago, and they did an actual test to determine that it was the flu and the type of flu he had.

Here in Canada, the criteria to be tested for influenza require either hospitalization or being part of an institutional outbreak. Having symptoms and being in the ER or your doctor's office is insufficient to be tested.

The government of Canada publishes weekly influenza activity reports during flu season: https://www.canada.ca/en/public-hea...za-surveillance/weekly-influenza-reports.html It captures both laboratory-confirmed influenza as well as "influenza-like illness" from their nationwide reporting network.

The US CDC has a similar Weekly U.S. Influenza Surveillance Report: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/index.htm

As to your question. I have been diagnosed with influenza twice. Once in Canada and once in the US. Neither time was I tested - it was clear from the symptoms, including the "having been run over by a truck" feeling, that the doctor had no doubt what it was.

For H1N1, we think we know when I had it, but I had what was probably a mildish version of it -- we knew it was not a cold (it was worse and weird for a cold) but it wasn't like full-blown influenza, and my doctor wasn't sure what it was at the time. I got it in the early days of community spread in our city. I later participated in a provincial study to assess how many people had already been exposed and developed antibodies, and I was positive on that. In hindsight, my doctor thinks the weird infection I had some months before was likely the H1N1.

Rapid test for flu symptoms...pretty standard here in clinics and physician's office.

The schools in our town alerted at 3pm today that there will be 1/2 day tomorrow for students. Staff will stay and work out lesson plans for teaching kids from home to prepare in case it becomes necessary. I'm assuming our schools will close by next Monday. We are very close to Westchester Co and cases are now popping up on all sides of us.

My niece and daughter live just west of Philly in Narberth. School was closed today, indefinitely.

Dh went to Costco today (we're westside Wa.). No TP or paper towels - and there was an employee stationed there to make sure no one was putting more than 2 items in their cart of water (similar rules on TP and PT, if there had been any). Dh heard the employee yelling several times at people "ONLY TWO" when people tried to put a 3rd in their basket (despite clear signage in several places). Sometimes people did sneak by the guy, however, and were then caught at check out. Those items removed were then collected and returned to their area. Dh was trying to get paper towels - an employee came rolling by with a cart that had 2 pkgs. of PT - Dh asked if he could have one. YES - we got paper towels. There was victory cheering (by Dh) while everyone else that passed him or saw him either asked him frantically where he got it, or eyed him like he was about to get shanked and relieved of his prize. He said it was a bit unnerving to gather the rest of the shopping after he put the PT in the cart. People are turning into vultures, I tell you!!

i was just happy they had the tubs of individually wrapped milano cookies that were on sale when i went the other day. i don't care if someone thought i was stockpiling, they were half the price for half again more than the container i bought off amazon for christmas and are dated out for over a year so i got the max amount they permitted.
In emergencies, hard decisions must be made. You did well.
