Anyone stockpiling food?

Just read about people beginning to hoard food in the event of the coronavirus shutting down the nation. My husband is a worrier, so I bought some extra water and canned goods just to appease him. The way we eat, it would only buy us an extra week, though. Anyone else stockpiling?
No

Food? Not really. I have a big pantry and a freezer that are both chock full.

I did do a Costco run this morning and stocked up on paper products, cleaning products, toiletries, some OTC meds, etc. I'd rather not have to worry about that stuff if anyone in my household becomes sick, but I didn't buy any more than I normally would. It was time to restock.

I will say, though, stuff like Clorox wipes, cleaning products, and paper towels and toilet paper were almost wiped out. It was also much more crowded than a typical Friday morning. It seems like people are starting to stock up on stuff.

I bought some extra stuff for the freezer, not because I worry about our area being quarantined or the stores being emptied- but if the virus comes to our area we could stay home for probably a month without having to go out and possibly being exposed. Peace of mind I guess.

This is the kind of thing I'd be more worried about than the actual virus. Media-induced panic that causes people to hoard/clear out food and medications from the stores.
However how would it affect you longterm? The store shelves would be re-stocked and you can buy at your leisure another day or two later assuming it was a panic.

I was talking to a coworker whose DH is a nurse. She said they were told to have 2 weeks worth of food and meds on hand. Not because of the nation shutting down. More because if you do get it you would have to stay quarantined for two weeks so you don't spread it. Also family would have to stay quarantined too since they could unknowingly spread it,

I mean, if you are quarantined and not the whole community you're in, why not just get stuff delivered from Amazon?

I suppose, but I still find it a nuisance if I need toilet paper and can't find any because everyone has hoarded it all.

Where I live, we don't have hurricanes or snowstorms so we're not really used to dealing with shortages due to mass stockpiling.

The radio station I listen to in the morning (not talk radio, more top 40) had Sanjay Gupta on this morning to talk about the virus. He recommended people stock up on 2 weeks of supplies (food, tp, medications, whatever else you use daily). My thought: what a fearmongering segment. I enjoy the thing I've seen floating around Facebook the last couple of days with each year's deadly news story (measles, SARS, avian flu, etc).

But, yes we have a couple of weeks of shelf stable foods in our house. But then, even though I live hundreds of miles inland (Atlanta, GA) I've experienced long term power outages due to snow storms or hurricane/tornado damage. I've enjoyed gas shortages, so I also don't tend to let my gas tank get to empty. Just common sense stuff, especially if you have kids and pets in the house.

I’m a worrier anyway, but I was trying to be all chill about this...

But the more I read, the more anxious & panicky-feeling I get.

So I started making a list & will go out tomorrow & begin “prepping”.

But that doesn't mean the world stops around you. Ask family/friends/neighbors to drop stuff off outside on your porch. UPS/USPS/FedEx will still deliver to your house.

This is where critical thinking skills come in handy.

That seems like overkill. I find it extremely unlikely that in the United States we'd actually be able to quarantine a community.

I’m more concerned about Supply Chain disruptions than quarantine. Since businesses are always tweaking their “just in time” inventory / deliveries strategies. I have wondered what it would take to get things off kilter. Amazon integrating Whole Foods messed it up in some areas (memes with photos of stores with bare shelves). So what would something serious too. Especially things that might be sourced in Asia. Not necessarily food.

I haven’t been home much since Thanksgiving and need to stock up, just to stock up. We were going to go to Costco, Trader Joe’s, etc. Instead we are dealing with a family medical emergency. So “disaster prep” will have to wait.

The water is most bizarre to me. It’s not a hurricane or a blizzard, I don’t anticipate city water will go away.

we usually have a quite a bit of food in our pantry and freezer.

I should probably stock up on wine and beer if the possibility of being quarantined in my house with a toddler for 2 straight weeks exists. Although we have a yard and a swingset and I can’t think of any reason we wouldn’t be able to go out there

I tend to keep some stuff in the cupboards year round, just in case. I have 2 cases of bottled water in the closet already. I'll pick up my usual hurricane supplies this weekend, I think. (Powdered creamer, canned chili, canned pineapple, etc) I usually do a bulk shopping trip once a month, and then go weekly for things like buns, bread, milk, creamer, and fresh veggies.
