If anyone has recently stayed at Howard Johnsons across the street, could you please let me know how it is. We just secured a great airfare to LAX and have decided to stay low cost for a week (we are going to WDW for 2 wks in Sept too). There is an internet special at the HoJo's for $62 per night, a savings of 34% they say. Is the place OK and also, is the walk far to DL? I know a shuttle is available too. We also plan to hit Universal and Knottsberry. Any other info would be appreciated. Thanks.

We stayed at Howard Johnson's before and I enjoyed it. The rooms are comfortable and about as big as the moderate resorts at WDW.you have a choice between 2 queen beds or one king. The room we had had a view of the 5 freeway. If you are a light sleeper I would ask for a room away from the freeway. 62 bucks is a good rate we paid 99 a night for ours. It's a 15 min walk to the front gate (turnstiles). Close by you have a Mexican Restauraunt (El torito?)that serves a all you can eat Breakfast Buffet which has American items and also south or the border favorites. We recieved a coupon upon check in for couple dollars off the Buffet. As for transportation to Universal there now is a shuttle that leaves from the Disneyland hotel to Universal. I'm not sure of what time it does leave or if you hafta stay at Disneyland hotel but I know you have to show your universal ticket or purchase one from the driver in order to use the shuttle. Knotts isn't that far away so a taxi would be good and inexpensive. You might want to check around the local fast food restauraunts there are always some sort of coupon deal to save on admission to Universal and Knotts theme parks.

Thanks Mike, we will have a car so transportaion won't be an issue. In 1994 when we went, we used a shuttle to get to Universal and hated being on their schedule. We willbe on the lookout for discount coupons. I'm glad the hojo's is fine to stay at. I was kinda worried because the price was so low. Thanks again.

Don't know if this is any help -- last year's AAA book rated it two stars.

...we've stayed there several times and have been happy with it. It's not as convenient as some of the other hotels in the area, but it's still walking distance. I'd estimate about a 10-15 minute walk. They also have shuttles.

The rooms are nice and clean. It's a little more like a hotel as compared to some of the others in the area which are motel-like.

What's nice is there's a restaurant right on the property. The Mexican restaurant across the street is Acapulco (unless it's changed), and we think it's excellent!

You may want to check the prices on Carousel Inn. On our last stay, we were at HoJo, then found a coupon book with a rate at Carousel that was at least $10 per night less than the HoJo price, so we moved! The hotel was extremely close to the Disney entrance, and the room was slightly bigger. (Carousel is more like a motel though, if that's a factor for you.)

The hotel looks really nice, and isn't really that far from Disneyland. It's just not "right there" like some of the other hotels. There is an Acapulco restaurant next door, and probably half a block there's a MacDonalds & a Millie's Restaurant. There is also a Denneys and a Tony Romas pretty close, too.

Our family (my wife, son and 3 year old granddaughter) stayed at HoJo from Dec 1-4, we liked it very much, we payed about $85 a night, the room was always clean and even though the freeway was next to the hotel they have "2" doors to the back porch that are double paned so its really quiet. The shuttle bus cycles about every twenty minutes with no stop going to DL, on the return trip it stops only once or twice. The best place to eat was Millies Resturant about half a block away it is themed for kids and family with very good food. The kids wading pool was closed but the main pool was open, also they have a small game room with a gift shop, look for the mark-downs! LOL If and when we return to DL we will definately go back to HoJo. BTW the food wasn't that good at IHop down the street.

Thank you so much for the great responses. I have been trying to book the hotels that are closer, but most have no availability or are a lot more expensive, although I will keep checking. It is unlikely that I will find a lower rate because $62 is pretty cheap. The Hojo's sounds fine, as it is just two adults. We will probably use the shuttle if it comes that often, but it is nice to have the option to walk. Does anyone who has been recently know exactly where discount coupons to Knottsberry and Universal can be found? I don't want to be running all over looking for them or pay full price if I don't have to. I already ordered disneyland passed from TDS.

Traditional Subway carries Universal coupons and Burger King carries Knotts. If you check the maps at the parks I've found Universal coupons on the Knotts guide maps. HOJO has a rack of coupons in the lobby offering discounts to all So-Cal attractions which will save you a few dollars off admission...
